Chapter 277: Chapter 267: Moving House
The next day, Xue Jianian planned to take Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue to take a look at the new factory. Grandpa Xue had registered yesterday and had been assigned a house, which of course required paying rent. They symbolically charged five yuan, just to avoid any gossip.
First, they would take a look, and then show them the location of the new house. Lu Jingqiu didn’t go with them but instead went to the entrance of Jiang Nanzhou’s team.
She purposely arrived at twelve o’clock, having notified someone in advance, for fear of interrupting his work.
After Jiang Nanzhou met her, he directly took her to the cafeteria here and asked, "How long have you been waiting here?" This place was a bit far from the city center, so it was almost this time when she arrived.
"Just arrived. I have some good news for you."
"Don’t tell me, let me guess."
"Okay, you guess."
"Is it about the house?"
"Yes."
"Any problems?"
"No, there’s a pond, and I got a total of five houses assigned to me— one three-bedroom, three two-bedroom, and one one-bedroom. I’ve signed all the contracts. How about that, are you happy?"
Jiang Nanzhou, seeing no one around, indulgently stroked her nose, "My wife is really capable. There’s plenty of good food in the team today, come on, your man will get food for you."
"This place is really big."
"It is bigger than our side. After eating, I’ll take you for a walk around."
"Okay."
The cafeteria here was pretty much like the one in West City; the food was in line with the local tastes.
Jiang Nanzhou got her some rice and a few dishes, including two portions of meat. The food was quite good.
"What time do you start work in the afternoon?"
"Two o’clock," said Jiang Nanzhou, checking the time. "Is it convenient for you to stay on that side? Otherwise, I can book a guesthouse for you."
Lu Jingqiu shook her head, "No need. Grandpa Xue is going to the new factory, and he applied for a house yesterday. Today, Niannian is taking them to clean the house. Tomorrow, I’ll join Niannian and others to help Grandpa Xue move. After Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue move out, Niannian and I will live in the old house, so we’ll have more space."
Jiang Nanzhou nodded, "That’s fine, I’ll be at ease then. In these few days, when you’re free, you can go shopping by yourself, but don’t go to places where there are few people."
"Yes, I know."
After eating, Jiang Nanzhou took her on a tour around the compound before reluctantly sending her onto the bus.
After getting off in the city center, Lu Jingqiu didn’t rush back but wandered around the neighborhood, going into any stores she came across and visiting any markets as well.
Lu Jingqiu discovered a rabbit factory in the area, and she also came across a small workshop making leather sofas.
The sofas inside looked quite nice, but unfortunately, they were too bulky to take back.
She noted down the owner’s address for her second cousin to check out the next time he came.
Leather sofas were still very much in demand at the time.
By the time Lu Jingqiu returned to the Xue Family, Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue had already come back, worn out from the day’s work, both too tired to stay awake, they rested.
Xue Jianian and Wei Jincheng were in the kitchen, one tending the fire and the other cooking.
Lu Jingqiu, carrying the braised meat in her hand, smiled and said, "Sorry to interrupt your sweet moment."
Xue Jianian, blushing, said, "What are you talking about, thanks for the braised meat. It’s perfect, we were planning to have rice porridge today, and now we don’t need to cook an extra dish."
Lu Jingqiu brought the items to the kitchen and helped Xue Jianian with the prep work. She asked, "Have you chosen the house yet?"
"Yes, we did. It’s the one right at the end of the first row."
The next day, Lu Jingqiu got up early to help Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue pack their belongings.
Wei Jincheng went out to find a small tricycle. The first trip, he took a bed quilt, along with Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue, to the new factory area because Grandpa Xue had to guard the gate there today.
Xue Jianian and Lu Jingqiu stayed behind to organize things at home. Despite the home not seeming to have much, it turned out there was plenty to pack.
Grandma Xue had prepared several bed sheets for them, instructing them to wrap clothes and quilts in the sheets.
Wei Jincheng would come about every half hour for another load, and they helped him load each time he returned.
In total, it took about ten trips. They were using a stove here, but they would need coal balls there, so the big pot was useless, but still needed at the new house, just the pots alone filled one trip.
They couldn’t finish in the morning, so after lunch, they continued until past five o’clock.
Xue Jianian and Lu Jingqiu bought some cooked food from the city and went over to Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue’s new place to celebrate by having the first meal in the new home.
While they were moving, there were also some workers gradually relocating to the area, meaning that there were still people living around the factory area at night.
The canteen here was under renovation and would not be open until next week. However, since workers were assembling machinery, there was a window selling food.
Grandma Xue said that she had explored the area today and found a small market across from the village. Every morning around five o’clock, there was an early market.
By eight o’clock, the market would close, offering vegetables, poultry, and breakfast foods.
You could buy everyday necessities there, a detail Grandma Xue quite appreciated.
Xue Jianian and Lu Jingqiu had no idea about it. During their previous visits, they had never inquired, not expecting that Grandma Xue would figure it all out on her first day here.
Lu Jingqiu had been worried that Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue would take some time to adjust to the move, but they seemed even more comfortable than them.
Their adaptability was especially strong. Grandpa Xue mentioned how in his youth, it was common for him to travel far and wide.
Grandma Xue said as long as she was with Grandpa Xue, she’d be comfortable anywhere.
Lu Jingqiu truly admired them. She had been in Yangcheng City for quite a while now and had noted that Grandpa and Grandma Xue, who were in their sixties or seventies, were in exceptional health, free from common minor ailments like headaches or fevers, not to mention any of the chronic diseases typical of the elderly. She inwardly marveled at this for a long time.
What Lu Jingqiu didn’t know was that the reason Grandpa Xue and Grandma Xue were so healthy was largely due to the past few years since Xue Jianian acquired that "space". Although Xue Jianian was in West City, every time she returned, she would fill their rice bin to the brim, along with various kinds of beans and fruits.
Vegetables didn’t keep well, so she dried them into preserved vegetables for them, left about a dozen chickens, ducks, and geese at their house, and told Grandpa Xue to get a few more thermos bottles, filling seven or eight with water from the space. Grandpa Xue would occasionally mix some "space water" into the water they used daily.
Besides its limitless growing capabilities, the space also had health-strengthening effects, which was why Grandpa and Grandma Xue stayed illness-free in recent years. Drinking the water regularly even prevented their old minor illnesses from coming back.
Of course, Grandma Xue also talked about this period of good health with Grandpa Xue.
Grandpa Xue didn’t have the chance to explain at that time, and Grandma Xue came up with her own explanation, attributing their well-being to the good water at the new place, which she said was nourishing.
Grandpa Xue laughed heartily and said that the main reason was they did not have to work too hard anymore, which helped to maintain their health.
Grandma Xue actually quite agreed with this statement.
