Chapter 239: Chapter 231: Getting on the Wrong Wedding Sedan Chair

Lu Jingqiu got up early the next morning and immediately leaned out on the balcony, which had a clear view of the bride and groom.

Unexpectedly, Xiao Shun and Xiao Yin also got up so early. They greeted her from their second floor, "Sister Xiao Qiu, do you think it’ll be lively today?"

Lu Jingqiu laughed, "A wedding, it’s definitely going to be a lively day. Why aren’t you two waiting to collect wedding candies?"

Xiao Shun laughed mysteriously, which made Lu Jingqiu pause. Xiao Yin opened her mouth as if to say something but was quickly silenced by Xiao Shun, "Can’t say, can’t say, Sister Xiao Qiu will find out soon."

"What’s with you two? What’s the big secret?"

Xiao Shun just smiled again and said nothing.

Lu Jingqiu, not understanding, continued to watch outside. Those two little rascals, she might as well just focus on the bride.

Looking back again, she noticed a car parked in front of their house—a private car at that.

"Wow, the groom’s family really went for a car, huh? So grand, no wonder Aunt Cuihua was so impressed." The family must be quite well off.

But then Xiao Shun said, "Sister Xiao Qiu, haven’t you noticed that the car is parked closer to your house, and it’s only just past seven?"

"Right, why haven’t we seen anyone from the groom’s family come over?"

No sooner had she finished speaking than the Xu Family’s door opened. Xu Li, dressed in festive red and wearing a big red flower, got straight into the car.

The car started quickly, the accelerator was pressed, and it left in an instant, scattering a handful of candies from the window as it went.

Lu Jingqiu was taken aback and pointed at the road, "This... isn’t this too hasty? The fireworks haven’t even been set off yet. Where is the family?"

Lu Jingqiu, still confused, then saw Aunt Wu Cuihua’s grandson run out and point at the distant car, "Granny, my auntie got into the car and left."

Upon hearing this, Wu Cuihua was stunned for a moment, her expression changing rapidly within a few seconds, then as if understanding the situation, she shouted loudly, gathering the Xu Family and the relatives.

"Quick, Xiao Li was taken away by that guy, chase!"

"...Taken by which guy? Weren’t the wedding pick-up folks supposed to come at ten?"

"It’s her boyfriend from the Cultural Work Troupe."

At that revelation, the Xu Family’s expressions changed. Those who could run did so, and those with bikes mounted them, all rushing off in pursuit.

Lu Jingqiu finally understood. It turned out that Xu Li had silently left in her boyfriend’s car on her own wedding day.

Aiyo, how could she have forgotten? After she left the sanatorium in her previous life, she had heard Aunt Liu say.

Xu Li had gotten married, but it didn’t turn out well. "What was she thinking? Her parents had found such a good match for her, a man who’s now a leader in a state-owned enterprise."

Look at who she ended up with: after both were laid off, the husband had no skills, and everything depended on her.

Their daughter was already so big, and her husband’s family didn’t care for her. Aunt Cuihua nearly raised the child.

Now Xu Li, by selling clothes, had made some money and finally bought an apartment. However, her husband’s family was calculating and insisted on having it registered in his name. Soon after buying the apartment, his parents came from their hometown to live in the new place, ostensibly to look after the child.

Ha, the child was already ten years old. Where had they been when it was their time to care for her? But now, with the new apartment, they made their move.

Really, they just came to enjoy the good life.

Every day at the Xu Family’s place was utterly chaotic. Xu Li finally saw things clearly and decided to divorce the man.

Unfortunately, the house was in his name, so he occupied the house and refused to give it up. Can you imagine how infuriating that was?

Luckily, Aunt Cuihua wasn’t one to be trifled with and had been making quite the scene over there lately.

Back then, Jingqiu was worried about her father’s illness and didn’t pay much attention to the matter. She hadn’t followed up to see what had happened since then.

Today, to her surprise, she witnessed the scene of Xu Li getting into the wrong wedding sedan. It really was unexpected; turns out, at this time, Xu Li still had her romantic fantasies, quite a match for Jingqiu herself.

She turned and saw Xiao Shun and Xiao Yin curiously looking at the chaotic Xu Family ahead and wondered, "You two, did you know about this in advance?"

Xiao Shun grinned and dropped the mysterious act, briefly telling her about what they had overheard outside the courtyard a few days ago.

"After school that day, not far from the main gate, we overheard Sister Xu Li talking with her beau. They were plotting to quietly whisk Sister Xu Li away in a car on their wedding day and hold the ceremony in a rented house."

Lu Jingqiu said, "A rented house? They had already prepared a house in advance?"

Xiao Yin said with a smile, "Yes, yes, something about cooking the rice until it’s done."

"If you don’t know, don’t say it. Hurry up and go down to tell our mom so she can come out and enjoy the drama."

Xiao Shun smacked Xiao Yin on the head and sent her down. Lu Jingqiu almost covered her face. Kids these days sure knew a lot.

Lu Jingqiu didn’t stay on the second-floor balcony for too long. She had prepared a couple of sunny-side-up eggs for herself that morning, and then she played in the yard with Hua Guoguo and Hua Hua, tending to the vegetable garden and cleaning their sandbox, all while "incidentally" listening to the noise outside.

Around ten in the morning, the prospective groom arrived with a convoy. Seeing that the Xu Family’s expressions were off and some members were missing, it put the groom’s side in an awkward spot.

On such an important day, Xu Li’s parents were absent, which made the groom’s family lose face.

Before anyone could figure out what was going on, a young family member blurted out that their oldest sister had run off with someone.

This stirred up quite the commotion, and the groom’s family began assaulting the Xu Family members. Eventually, one of the Xu Family’s relatives mentioned the place where Xu Li and the outsider had gone, challenging the groom to pursue them if he dared.

Stealing her away was out of the question, but the groom needed to vent his anger.

The groom immediately had his relatives call his parents and all their friends to come to the Xu Family’s place.

They couldn’t get a hold of the person, but they had to settle the expenses of meeting, arranging, and preparing for the wedding with the Xu Family.

About half an hour later, two uncles from the groom’s family arrived.

They told the groom that the wedding couldn’t be canceled. The family had found someone else for him and he was to return home to get married.

How could the groom swallow such an insult? His own wedding was ruined, and he wouldn’t let Xu Li off easy either.

So he left his two uncles there to sort things out while he and a grand procession went off in search of Xu Li.

It looked like this wedding fiasco was going to end up at the police station. Too bad the battlefield had shifted; despite her eagerness to gossip, she couldn’t see it.

Lu Jingqiu peeked through the crack of the door and noticed quite a few neighbors gathered on both sides of the street.

Even Aunt Liu had come out, and so Lu Jingqiu quietly opened the door.

The only question was, should she return the wedding money or not.
