Chapter 225: Chapter 217: Xia Lin is Too Ashamed to Show Up

Yang Pinggui, seeing that no one from the Gao Family had come over for a while, stopped waiting and said to Lu Jingqiu, "Qiuqiu, follow me to the cafeteria for lunch at noon, there’s no need to deliberately wait around."

"Uncle can rest assured, I know what to do. I’ll go find Uncle at the cafeteria at noon."

"Good, just lock the door from the inside when you leave the house; don’t mind your second cousin, he left early this morning."

"Mhm."

Having sent Uncle away, Lu Jingqiu went about cleaning the house as if nothing was amiss.

Just as she was about to head to the study to paint, the doorbell rang.

Peering through the door crack, she saw it was Gao Shu, his face sporting a bruise—clearly, he’d had a tough time with the second cousin.

Seeing him alone, Lu Jingqiu had no intention of opening the door.

Gao Shu must have heard some noise because he said, "Jingqiu, I know you’re home. Yesterday, it was Xia Lin who was in the wrong; I’ve come to apologize on her behalf."

From behind the door, Lu Jingqiu responded, "Apologies delegated now, are they? Sorry, but I don’t accept ones with not a bit of sincerity. Gao Shu, you go back and tell Xia Lin, better cut back on those schemes—be careful, or karma will get you."

"Jingqiu, she definitely won’t do it again."

"You’re not her; how do you know she won’t? Don’t talk so definitively; it’s your own face that’ll get slapped later. You should leave."

Gao Shu wanted to say more but heard Lu Jingqiu’s retreating footsteps.

Reluctant to leave, he stood by the door for a while, but with someone coming, he couldn’t keep standing there.

About to go, he found himself surrounded by several kids, who looked at him curiously.

Xiao Shun and the others eyed the item in his hand and said, "Uncle Gao, aren’t you going to put that down?"

Gao Shu was taken aback, not understanding what they meant.

Looking down at the net bag in his hand, he said, "I’ll come again another day. What are you kids doing here instead of studying?"

Xiao Shun and the others looked a bit disappointed as they watched him step away.

One licked his lips and said, "I haven’t had my fill of this morning’s canned food yet."

Another said, "I think there are pastries in Uncle Gao’s net bag."

Xiao Shun said, "Let’s go, let’s go, we can’t eat this time, let’s go play."

"Aren’t we waiting anymore? Is anyone else coming to apologize to Sister Xiao Qiu’s house?"

"Who knows, but we can’t just keep waiting like this."

The kids left with looks of disappointment on their faces.

From upstairs, Lu Jingqiu watched Gao Shu leave with his head down, then watched the kids run off, a smile curving her lips.

She knew that Xia Lin would never lower her proud head to apologize to her.

But it didn’t matter; she had no interest in Xia Lin’s insincere apologies anyway.

The road ahead was long; who knew, maybe one day she would take a fall.

At lunchtime, Lu Jingqiu took her boxed lunch to find her uncle.

She thought it would just be her uncle alone, but Uncle Du and Father Yang were there too.

With several dishes on the table, Lu Jingqiu knew that yesterday’s incident had reached the ears of the two leaders.

At the dining table, the uncles and Father Yang offered her many warm words of concern.

They told her that if she faced such an issue again, there was no need to suffer in silence; she must inform these uncles about it.

Listening to their words, Lu Jingqiu’s heart pounded; she felt as if something had happened.

She even thought of Jiang Nanzhou, as in her previous life, she had never encountered this person in the military area nor had her father mentioned him.

But surely he is a soldier from this military region, such an outstanding person, how come Dad has never mentioned him?

Ever since Jiang Nanzhou left, her heart had been hanging.

She didn’t know whom to share her worries with or even how to voice them.

The leaders’ warmth at today’s dinner table only intensified Lu Jingqiu’s worries. Upon returning home, she hurriedly turned on the radio and tuned in to the current affairs channel.

Attempting to hear some useful news from the broadcast.

Because her mind could never settle, Lu Jingqiu didn’t even feel like painting.

Clutching the radio, she lay on the bed for a few hours; had Luo Xinyue not come to find her, she might have listened until midnight.

"Why are you here? Are you joining me to go to school?"

"I could go to school with you, but Xue Jianian said she wants us over at her place for dinner tonight. She’s going to cook us something delicious."

"Niannian is treating us? It was actually my turn to invite you guys. Ah, I’m really sorry about yesterday. You two didn’t get scolded after you went home, did you?"

Luo Xinyue laughed and shook her head, "No, my dad even said I did the right thing and praised me a lot. This morning, when the Yang Family went over, they got a severe dose of sarcasm from my dad; Father Yang didn’t even dare to lift his head."

"That’s good, let me change clothes and prepare something for Hua Hua and Guoguo to eat."

Luo Xinyue waited for her for a while. Lu Jingqiu organized the clothes for the week and then cooked some noodles for Hua Hua, as well as dried fish, and left them in the room.

Riding her bike, Luo Xinyue led the way, and Lu Jingqiu also mounted hers. Their school had parking available, and they could ride back on Sunday.

By the time they arrived at Xue Jianian’s home, it was already past five.

Upon entering the yard, they saw Xue Jianian already busy in the kitchen.

She hurried out from the kitchen, smiling, "Today, I’m going to cook a few dishes that I’m particularly good at, and we’ll have them with rice. How does that sound?"

Luo Xinyue nodded happily, "That sounds great; I’ve been waiting to eat."

Lu Jingqiu said, "Let me help you out."

"I’ve prepared all the ingredients; only the stir-frying is left. Today’s ingredients were all bought with the compensation money from Yang Linghua, so we definitely can’t waste them."

Lu Jingqiu smiled, "Sounds good."

Curious, Luo Xinyue asked, "Did the Yang Family go to Professor Shi’s home or come here?"

"They visited my godparents. My godmother wanted to give Yang Linghua a good talking-to, but my godfather said we intellectuals shouldn’t stoop to such tasteless acts. They just gave a cold shoulder, and that alone made Yang Linghua unable to retort."

Luo Xinyue snorted lightly, "She deserved what happened today. It seems like she hasn’t learned her lesson at all."

Lu Jingqiu said, "Whether she learns her lesson or not, if she provokes me again, I’ll beat her just like yesterday, leaving her no chance to fight back."

Luo Xinyue then looked at Lu Jingqiu excitedly, "Jingqiu, I had no idea you were so good at fighting. Did you learn that from your dad?"

Lu Jingqiu said, "If I told you I learned it while being a ’sent-down youth’ in the countryside, from the village women and from practical experience with Xia Lin, would you believe me?"

Xue Jianian exclaimed, "With Xia Lin? You’ve fought her?"

Lu Jingqiu hummed lightly, "In the past, we would fight at the drop of a hat over Gao Shu, and it was always me who threw the first punch."

Xue Jianian had always wanted to hit Xia Lin, but never had the chance under her watch. Today, however, she gained new insight; fights don’t need a reason. She should learn from Lu Jingqiu—just hit when you want to, without needing any excuse.

"Jingqiu, Xia Lin has lived in the countryside since she was young; she must be strong. How did you manage to beat her?"

"I used to lose to her; it was the kind where she pulls my hair, and I pull hers. Back then, I still cared about my image, not wanting to seem too shrewish. But now, with no man to love, what’s there to care about? I hit however it suits me, of course using some of the experience I’ve gained.

You better not follow my example. If I strike someone, it’s because I’m too enraged in that moment."

Luo Xinyue said, "Xia Lin and Yang Linghua were just unlucky enough to be caught by you in the act. They deserved their misfortune."

Xue Jianian added, "It’s a good thing it was discovered. If not, who knows where they would have schemed against us."

Xue Jianian had always held onto the belief that Xia Lin was behind the attempt to harm her. Even though others deemed it unlikely, she remained convinced it was Xia Lin’s doing.
