Chapter 155: Chapter 152: Custom Furniture
The classmates, looking at the bandage on Lu Jingqiu’s face, all approached with concern to ask about it. She simply said she had accidentally bumped into something and that it would heal in a couple of days.
Luo Xinyue took a careful look and clicked her tongue, "To me, it looks more like a scratch."
Lu Jingqiu rolled her eyes, "You’ve got sharp eyes indeed."
Luo Xinyue snorted lightly, "Sis used to get into fights before, so I have experience. Come on, spill the beans. What happened?"
There were too many people in the class, and it wasn’t until they went to the cafeteria at noon that they found a spot with no one around to talk about yesterday’s encounter.
But to Luo Xinyue’s focus was not on the troublesome old lady but rather, she said, "You’re getting married?"
"Yeah, we’re planning the wedding for the coming holiday this semester, and you’ll be my bridesmaid then."
"Sure, hey, Shang Ze and I were discussing holding the wedding earlier this summer break, but my parents wanted to keep me for two more years, so I didn’t agree."
"Your mom probably doesn’t want you getting married too early."
"Hmph, we’ve grown up together since we were kids, and it’s been so many years. Besides, I’m of age now, there’s no such thing as too early. But I don’t really care. You, on the other hand, are moving quite fast."
"My family is not in a hurry, but his family is. He is older than me and can’t afford to wait any longer."
"Shang Ze is also three or four years older than me. In most cases, the guy’s side is more anxious about marriage. The Shang family has also prepared a house for us. By the way, where is your house located?"
"Academy Road, Second Community."
"Ah, the house prepared by Shang Ze’s family is in the First Community. We’ll be just two streets apart, not too far. Then I can come over to hang out with you."
"That’s quite a coincidence."
"Shang Ze’s father bought that house a few years back and had planned everything for Shang Ze. After graduating from high school, he was supposed to go to Politics and Law University through the worker-peasant-soldier students’ program, but due to some changes, he started working directly. That house, being not far from his university and ours, is just perfect for us once we’re married. Actually, getting married while still in school is also fine. Look at our university; there are quite a few who are married and even have kids. Just last week, I saw two pregnant students. Nobody finds it strange."
The conversation had started about her injury, but Luo Xinyue had diverted it to something totally different. However, this was the kind of thing Luo Xinyue, the spoiled young lady, would come up with, acting on a whim with confidence.
Of course, when they got back to the dormitory, they couldn’t avoid the inquiries from He Yu and Chen Qingru.
Yet their focus was relatively normal, "You can’t just let it slide after being hurt like that."
"My partner is discussing compensation with them this afternoon."
Luo Xinyue had pressing tasks and started drawing while listening to their conversation.
Chen Qingru said joyfully, "This table is really good, it’s so wide, ideal for drawing. Several girls came by last Sunday to inquire about it."
He Yu replied, "But we bought it with our own money, and once I mention the price, everyone goes silent. Plus, the opinions in other dorms are not united."
Lu Jingqiu nodded, sat down, and tried it out; it indeed felt great.
Her tasks, although not urgent, still couldn’t be neglected. So, taking advantage of this rest time, she sat down to concentrate on her drawing practice.
Chen Qingru’s basics needed to be polished. Their comic strip class only had one group with just over thirty students. She had noticed these past two weeks that many of her classmates were quite skilled.
To stand out in class, she had to practice more, duplicate more work.
Seeing the three of them so engrossed, He Yu didn’t feel right just lying down and started sketching the university buildings.
Lu Jingqiu thought that with He Yu’s great spatial sense and love for drawing objects, she should have applied for architecture.
He Yu regretted it too, but at the time of application, she didn’t know better; it was all arranged by her mother.
But that’s alright, what matters is drawing what she loves, and they were in dire need of practice now.
By Wednesday, Lu Jingqiu was able to remove the bandage from her face, which had healed, leaving only a red mark. Fortunately, there was no scorching sun now, and continuing to apply medicine would do the trick.
Early Thursday morning, their school organized a group for a trip directly to the Agricultural School. Of course, they walked the entire way, which was quite brisk, taking them just over half an hour.
It has to be said that the Agricultural University was indeed very large, but that was mainly because their school had lots of fields and farms with common sightings of chickens, ducks, geese, and they even had cows and sheep, all now kept in separate enclosures. To the people from their Academy of Fine Arts, visiting this place felt akin to going to a zoo.
Unfortunately, she wouldn’t run into Xue Jianian. At this time, she should be at Normal University.
The sports competition would have its preliminary rounds in the morning, with Lu Jingqiu’s event scheduled for tomorrow morning.
The preliminaries were in the morning and the finals in the afternoon. Today, she was just a cheerleader for her class, chanting encouragements along with the other students.
Once the morning events were over, the students could either walk back to their own school or stay and have lunch at the Agricultural University’s cafeteria if they didn’t feel like heading back.
He Yu and the others had no plans to return and wanted to take a tour around Agricultural University to get a feel for their food and dormitories.
Lu Jingqiu said she wanted to check on the house and left first, leaving the three of them to wander around Agricultural University.
She rushed out the door at eleven thirty and hadn’t taken two steps before she saw Jiang Nanzhou riding a bicycle.
"Nanzhou, are you not busy today?"
"Yeah, I’m resting with the team for a month. Come on, I’ll take you to see the house." She had already approached him. He reached out, touched her chin brace, and turned her head to carefully check her wound. "Have you been applying the medicine on time?"
"Yes, it’s been itching a bit these past two days."
"You have to endure the itching."
"Yeah."
Once Lu Jingqiu got on the bike, she then asked, "How’s the house coming along?"
"The walls have been torn down, and the roof of the storeroom has also been dismantled. Red bricks are being used to build pillars at the bottom, and floorboards will be used for the top part, so no more tiles. It’s cleaner this way and will also match the adjacent houses. What do you think?"
"Won’t that increase the expenses? Besides, getting floorboards isn’t easy either."
Jiang Nanzhou smiled and said, "I’ve got the floorboards, and we are reusing the bricks from the demolished walls."
"Oh, you manage as you see fit. By the way, how did it go with the Shen Family?"
"We’ve settled things. The Shen Family’s old lady came out yesterday, and they didn’t pay any money."
"Didn’t pay money?" Lu Jingqiu was puzzled.
Jiang Nanzhou curled his lips and smiled, "They gave goods instead, and I guessed you would like them, so I accepted them on your behalf. I’ll show them to you when we get back."
Lu Jingqiu didn’t ask anymore questions, and when they reached the house, the workers had already left for lunch. Upon entering, she saw that the storeroom by the entrance was much more spacious, and they had started building the pillars.
Once inside the room, the previously unattractive stove in the kitchen had been removed, and on the right-hand side of the room, a large hole had been made in the door, with a space of about eighty to ninety centimeters left near the entrance, which was just wide enough to fit a shoe cabinet.
The second floor had also been demolished.
Jiang Nanzhou pointed to the electrical wires in the room, "These wires are a mess and need to be replaced. Do you have any specific requirements for their placement?"
Lu Jingqiu shook her head; this time wasn’t like the future, the era of electrical appliances. Now, aside from televisions, light bulbs, and desk lamps, there was almost no need for other electricals.
But in a few years, perhaps there would be refrigerators, washing machines, rice cookers, and such.
"In the kitchen, leave two extra sockets; in the bathroom, place one high and one low, just in case there’s a washing machine in the future; next to the washbasin, leave one for a hairdryer. Well... Upstairs in the small living area where the TV will be, leave two extra sockets. Beside each bedside table in the bedrooms, fit a socket. Other than that... that’s all."
Lu Jingqiu was merely making arrangements for the years to come; whether she would live there or not, the necessary preparations were better made all at once, which also counted as contributing towards the depreciation costs for the landlord.
To Jiang Nanzhou, preparing for things like refrigerators and washing machines was a given, so he silently took note.
