Chapter 126: Chapter 124: One Surprise After Another
Lu Jingqiu gave the small gift box from Wu Zhengran to Gao Qing, and seeing Gao Qing’s questioning expression, she quickly raised her hands and said, "I really didn’t want to accept it, but he just stuffed it into my hands and ran away. There was nothing I could do. I swear, I’m always on your side.
"He told me if you didn’t want it, you could return it to him at the Industrial Vocational and Technical College."
"Hmph, he did it on purpose, knowing I wouldn’t want it. He just wants me to go see him," Gao Qing said as she opened the box to find a very delicate women’s watch.
Lu Jingqiu exclaimed, "This watch must have been expensive."
"Hmph, I’ll find someone to return it to him later."
Lu Jingqiu nodded. She didn’t feel it was her place to meddle in their affairs. With one person liking the other and not being reciprocated, how could she advise?
"Have you got everything ready for the trip?"
"Everything’s ready. These past few days, my mom prepared two new cotton quilts for my brother and me, bought all new items like basins and teapots, except for the Warm Pot. It’s not easy to carry, so she gave us tickets, telling us to buy one when we arrive. Qiuqiu, I might have to leave a few days early to get settled in after registering."
"Yeah, be careful on your way, and it’s good that you and your sibling can look out for each other."
"Qiuqiu, are you all set?"
"We have about five or six pounds of cotton at home, and my aunt helped me get another three or four pounds. I’ve already made an appointment with Aunt Liu to go to the old tailor’s this Sunday to make quilts."
"Qiuqiu, let me tell you, my Third Brother Gao said that when Xia Lin advised him to go to university, she told him that he wouldn’t last two years at the city government because he lacked education and all that. She analyzed it so logically. Tell me, how could a girl from the countryside understand all this, when she’s just a junior high graduate who only managed to get into a normal school?"
Lu Jingqiu pursed her lips, unsure of what to say. In her previous life, she knew of Third Brother Gao, but by the time she came out to this world, he was no longer working in the government. Instead, he was at the district office, certainly not in a good position.
Why Xia Lin advised Gao Yi to go to university, she truly didn’t know. Maybe in her previous life, Gao Yi helped Xia Lin when she was in her greatest difficulty, or maybe she wasn’t mistreated by Gao Yi in the Gao Family.
Isn’t it the same with every reborn female protagonist? To seek revenge on those who had wronged her and to repay those who had been kind to her.
Reflecting on her own past life, aside from when they clashed over Gao Shu back in Ten-miles Village, during the ten years after returning to West City, she had been in a sanatorium and had no interactions with Xia Lin whatsoever.
Now, Xia Lin probably didn’t even consider her worth noticing, let alone causing her trouble.
In the morning, Lu Jingqiu chatted with Gao Qing for a while, and in the afternoon, she cycled to the Government Compound to find Luo Xinyue.
She had thought it would take some effort to locate her, but luckily, she ran into her right at the entrance.
Luo Xinyue, returning from outside with an ice pop in hand, was the first to see her: "Jingqiu?"
"Xinyue, it’s good to have met you here. I was wondering how to get inside to find you."
"Why have you come?"
"I went to the agency, and Zhang Miao said you weren’t working there anymore."
Luo Xinyue nodded, pulled her inside the compound, walked towards the last unit building inside, and stopped at the third floor—it was her home.
There were few tiled houses with private courtyards in the Government Compound, mostly multi-story tube-shaped buildings, mostly three stories high. Luo Xinyue’s building looked like a typical tube building, but each unit had a balcony in the front, and each floor had a toilet and a water room.
However, their home was a two-bedroom and one-living room apartment which, although considered nice within the compound, felt crowded as it had been converted into a three-bedroom and one-living room apartment.
One of the rooms was split into two, and Luo Xinyue had two brothers. Her eldest brother was married and also worked for the government; he had his own apartment in the tube building right in front.
Her second brother was not married yet, but it was about to happen soon.
When Lu Jingqiu entered, she found that Mother Luo was also at home: "Mom, this is my former colleague, Lu Jingqiu."
Upon hearing her name, Mother Luo’s eyes lit up, "You are Comrade Jingqiu, aren’t you? Please sit, please sit."
"Hello, Aunt Luo."
"No need to be polite in my home," said Aunt Luo as she busily made a cup of malted milk for her and then glanced at the time, saying, "Jingqiu, my daughter Xinyue has been spoiled by us. She often speaks out of turn, and I’m so happy that you can tolerate and be friends with her. Ever since she started working at the publishing house, her temper has slowly improved a lot. This time, she’s been clamoring to go to school, and I heard it’s all thanks to you.
I don’t know how to thank you. I have to go to work now, so I can’t talk longer, but you must stay for dinner tonight. I’ll cook something delicious for you. Xinyue, I’ve heard what I said."
"Oh, Mom, you’re scaring her with all this talk as soon as you arrive. You’re going to be late for work. Hurry up and go."
Aunt Luo checked the time again: "It really is getting late. Xinyue, take good care of Jingqiu. I’m heading out."
"Aunt Luo, you go on with your work. I’ll just chat with Xinyue and then leave."
"Don’t be like that. Stay for dinner tonight. Xinyue, you must keep Jingqiu here," Mother Luo said as she hurried out the door.
Xinyue felt a bit embarrassed and laughed, "My mom usually eats lunch at her workplace. She’s just home today because she forgot something here."
Lu Jingqiu said, "Aunt Luo mentioned how it was all thanks to me, and something about going to university. Xinyue, I’ve only been gone a few days, and you just up and quit?"
Xinyue blushed, feeling awkward as she admitted, "I think you were right. My current level of drawing is barely better than a primary school student’s. I can rely on my family now, but in the future, when everyone is a university graduate, my situation will be even harder. Plus, there are a lot of people who don’t get along with my dad, and they always compare me and my brothers.
After thinking it over, I decided to go to university. But I don’t want to wait until next year.
You know my mom works at the Education Bureau. She asked West City University for me, and they have special enrollment, but you have to meet certain conditions.
I have to have some works. The picture books I published with the agency before and the illustration that was commissioned by the West City Daily News recently do meet their conditions for special enrollment.
Plus, I even took the exam at the academy the day before yesterday. It was their own test, and I passed," said Xinyue as she went into the room and brought out an envelope which surprisingly contained a special enrollment notification from West City Academy of Fine Arts.
Lu Jingqiu gave her a thumbs-up: "You’re awesome."
With a snort, Xinyue said, "Humph, I didn’t cheat. Before the exam, Ah Ze tutored me for a week. I scored over sixty points in Chinese, just passed math, and my former art teacher tutored me in art, in which I scored over eighty points. I also scored over eighty points in politics. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have accepted me."
"Is Ah Ze a good student? Why didn’t he go to university?"
"He’s already attending classes. He goes to Politics and Law University. He was accepted last year."
"Oh," she thought, in the future Shang Ze will be an important person; he should have a high level of education.
"If you didn’t come to see me today, I had in mind to go find you. I was thinking about us enrolling together. I want to be in the same dormitory as you."
"Sure, we’ll do it together when the time comes."
In the past two days since Lu Jingqiu came back, everyone has been giving her surprises, which makes her heart beat fast.
Glancing at the time, Xinyue said, "It’s still early. Let’s go shopping."
"Okay."
Xinyue changed clothes and got on a bicycle. The two of them then headed to the department store together.
