Chapter 103: Chapter 101: The Overly-Familiar Stranger on the Train
In the evening when Dad came back, he told her about many things to be mindful of on the road, and Lu Jingqiu took note of them all.
They had agreed that the guard, Xiao Li, would take them to the train station the next day.
Gao Qing also came over, "My dad says the day after tomorrow he’s holding a banquet for the people from the compound. Ah, it’s a pity you won’t be here."
Lu Jingqiu took a pen out of the box and gave it to her, "Here, a gift for your advancement to school. Remember to treat me to a meal when I come back, and don’t forget."
"Ah, I didn’t even think of it. Qiuqiu, thank you. I can’t give you any less of a gift. Wait for me to pick something nice out for you these days."
Lu Jingqiu didn’t stand on ceremony with her and laughed, "Okay, I’ll wait."
"Qiuqiu, guess what expressions they had today when I took my notice to the troupe?"
"Surprise, jealousy, envy, disbelief."
"Haha, you guessed them all right. Qiuqiu, you don’t know how relieved I felt today, their looks at me changed. There were plenty who flattered, and no shortage of sour comments either. Ah, it really made me see the truth, among them, there’s not one worth my deep friendship."
"It doesn’t matter, when you get to school, it’s a new beginning, with many classmates from all over. You’ll definitely meet close friends."
Gao Qing put her arm around Lu Jingqiu’s shoulder and said, "Qiuqiu, thank you."
Early the next morning, Lu Jingqiu made a few egg pancakes, and boiled some eggs, and filled a military canteen with water.
She didn’t prepare too much food, mainly because the weather was hot and she didn’t dare to prepare too much.
Around eight o’clock, Jiang Nanzhou and Xiao Li arrived.
Dad escorted them to the gate of the compound, gave them a few words of advice, and then returned to the unit.
Since they didn’t have much luggage, Jiang Nanzhou let Xiao Li return after dropping them off at the train station.
Because it was the student holiday period, there were quite a few people on the train. Jiang Nanzhou had bought two sleeper berths, both on the lower level.
After Lu Jingqiu put away her luggage, she took a deep breath of fresh air through the window. She couldn’t be blamed for being sensitive, the smell inside the compartment was really strong just now.
Seeing her like this, Jiang Nanzhou laughed, "Feel better now?"
"Yeah."
"You rest for a bit; I’ll go get some hot water."
Lu Jingqiu really wanted to say she brought her own, but thinking about lunch, they couldn’t share a canteen between two people, so she let him go.
After Jiang Nanzhou left, two young comrades came in, a man and a woman, who looked like university students on summer vacation, and they brought quite a few bags with them.
By the time Jiang Nanzhou came back, the train had started, and the sleepers weren’t like the hard seats; people chatted from all over in the carriage. In their sleeper berth with four beds, the girl was quite talkative, chatting all the time with the male comrade opposite her.
Lu Jingqiu felt bored, so she took out the prepared drawing paper and brushes, ready to paint some of the material she had taken over the past few days.
Jiang Nanzhou, afraid she might be hot, fanned her from the side.
The female comrade above saw this and said to them, "Comrade, your loved one is really good to you."
Lu Jingqiu, feeling embarrassed by her saying that, coughed lightly and explained, "He’s my boyfriend."
With that, she quickly pushed down the fan in Jiang Nanzhou’s hand, causing him to smile and stifle a laugh.
"Hello, my name is Si Xintian, and this is my husband, Zhang Xinguo."
Lu Jingqiu exclaimed, "You two are married? When you came in, I thought you were university students, you look so young."
Meng Xintian laughed, "I’m nineteen this year, and my husband is twenty. We’ve been married for a few months, and we are indeed university students. We both study in Haimarket and are transferring trains here. Where are you two heading?"
"To Yangjiang."
When Meng Xintian heard they were going to Yangjiang, she joyfully said, "My family is from Yangjiang, what a coincidence."
Zhang Xinguo looked at his wife revealing their family background in a few words and wanted to remind her, but unfortunately, she didn’t even give him a glance.
Zhang Xinguo had no choice but to greet Jiang Nanzhou, and Jiang Nanzhou nodded back at him.
Today, Jiang Nanzhou wasn’t in his military uniform but wore a casual white short-sleeved shirt with army-green pants below. Without his uniform, he looked rather low-key, but his temperament made him resemble the reserved-type male protagonists from those domineering CEO stories in future generations.
Lu Jingqiu was afraid that if she kept staring at Jiang Nanzhou, she’d act like a silly fan girl, which is why she took out her paintbrush to distract herself.
Now that she had someone to talk to, she was actually quite happy about it.
When noon arrived, Meng Xintian invited Lu Jingqiu to join her for lunch at the cafeteria, but Lu Jingqiu shook her head and declined. She had brought her own food.
Jiang Nanzhou asked, "What did you bring?"
Lu Jingqiu took out four or five rolled-up egg pancakes from her crossbody bag, along with a few eggs. "Thankfully they haven’t gone bad, lucky I didn’t make too many. Give them a try."
Jiang Nanzhou took one, bit into it, and praised, "These pancakes are good."
Lu Jingqiu took one to eat as well, then pointed to the remainder and said, "All of these are for you, make sure to finish them. They will probably spoil by evening."
"You eat two, I’ll finish the rest. You’re too frail, you should eat more in the future to build up your strength," he said.
Lu Jingqiu was startled, "I’m in good health."
"Looking a little plump is more attractive," he replied.
Lu Jingqiu laughed. She certainly didn’t think so, although people at that time did believe it was better to be slightly overweight.
Meng Xintian was very outgoing, and in less than a day’s time, she’d already started calling Lu Jingqiu ’sister.’
It was so that she didn’t even have time to paint.
Fortunately, everyone went to bed pretty early that night.
It wasn’t until the afternoon of the next day that they arrived at Yangjiang.
When they got off the bus, Meng Xintian still clung to Lu Jingqiu, reluctant to part, saying, "Sister Jingqiu, remember to come and visit me if you have time."
"Sure."
After parting ways with the two, Jiang Nanzhou took Lu Jingqiu straight to his older cousin’s military base.
At the guard post, they placed a call to his older cousin.
The uncle and aunt came out to meet them.
"Uncle, Auntie."
"Nanzhou, Qiuqiu, I thought you would arrive tomorrow morning. Was it crowded on the road?"
"It was okay," they replied.
The uncle took their luggage and said, "Let’s go, I’ll take you to the guesthouse to rest first. Your older cousin won’t be back until tonight."
"Okay," they responded.
The uncle and aunt were currently staying at the military district’s guesthouse.
Yangjiang City, being by the sea, also served as an important naval base, with the navy based here.
The military base was stationed along a coastline, a good distance from the city center.
Lu Jingqiu indeed felt tired and after bathing at the guesthouse, she slept for an hour.
"Auntie, are you and uncle going somewhere?"
"Qiuqiu, you’re awake. Your uncle and I were just about to go to your older cousin’s new house," she replied.
"I’ll go too," said Lu Jingqiu.
Saying this, she knocked on Jiang Nanzhou’s door, and the four of them headed to the military compound together.
Life in the older cousin’s unit seemed quite spartan, with a row of single-story family houses. Two rooms, one kitchen, one bedroom.
Without even a living room, hospitality had to be conducted right in the bedroom.
