Chapter 101: Chapter 99: A Family of Four College Students
Lu Jingqiu actually didn’t have a strong desire to buy anything, as she had seen the world of the future, and at the current time, it was fine to just go with the flow.
She also had a few blouses, all of which her mother had bought for her when she was alive, and they were all in good condition, hardly worn out.
But her aunt and Father Lu both said she should buy two pieces of clothing.
"Qiuqiu, my family just divided our property yesterday."
"Did it go smoothly?"
"Pretty smoothly, but my fifth brother didn’t want his share, saying he already had a house and that was enough, considering the care our parents had provided over the years. I think my fifth brother is being too distant."
"Xia Lin didn’t say anything?"
"Xia Lin wasn’t there. My fifth brother said she went on a trip to the south with her classmates," Gao Qing said, her lips curling with dissatisfaction when she mentioned Xia Lin, "She really has a lot of free time, even able to go traveling. The farthest she used to go in the countryside was probably the county city, but now that she’s married to my brother, she’s living the good life. She and my brother are both studying with no real source of income, I don’t know why they don’t save a bit more. Instead, she’s imitating the rich kids, traveling so far away. Never mind the traveling, but she only thinks about enjoying herself, not even considering to take along my fifth brother. My mom had quite a rant about my fifth brother on this, saying he spoils Xia Lin too much. My dad isn’t too happy with Xia Lin’s behavior either, because ever since my fifth brother has been back, he’s never asked my dad for a single penny. Although they get subsidies at school, it’s only just enough for the two of them to eat. Guess what my brother said?"
Lu Jingqiu, gossipily, asked, "What did he say?"
"He said Xia Lin can design clothes. The designs she made in the spring were bought by a garment factory, and the summer series also caught the factory’s attention, so she has some money in hand. We were all quite shocked at the time; we really didn’t expect Xia Lin had such a talent."
Upon hearing that Xia Lin could draw clothing designs, Lu Jingqiu frowned deeply. In her previous life, Xia Lin eventually opened a clothing factory—could it be that she had also been reborn?
"Qiuqiu, why do you think Xia Lin, having an interest in clothes, didn’t apply to study fashion design and instead went to the normal school?"
"She had a junior high education and self-studied the high school curriculum. It was already quite good that she made it into the normal school."
Gao Qing nodded, "That makes sense. Enough about Xia Lin, let me tell you something delightful, my share of the property from my mom is not small."
Seeing Gao Qing’s covetous expression, Lu Jingqiu replied speechlessly, "Your mom hasn’t given it to you now, has she?"
"No, she doesn’t trust me and is afraid I’ll waste it, so she’s holding onto it for me."
"As long as your sisters-in-law have no objections, that’s fine."
"Hmph, except for my second sister-in-law, who made some sour comments, none of my brothers and eldest sister-in-law mind."
Lu Jingqiu was happy for her little sister-friend, "Now that your eldest brother and second brother have moved out, and you and your third brother have gone off to school, only your fourth brother remains at home. But with his job being so busy, at times he’s not home for weeks. Suddenly, it’s just your parents at home; it must feel quite empty."
"It’s better being a bit empty, gives my mom a chance to enjoy some peace. But it won’t be quiet for long, my second sister-in-law is about to give birth. Ah, your admission notice has already arrived, and I’m still on edge. Although my predicted score is enough, there’s always the fear of the unexpected."
"Just wait a little longer. Haven’t you noticed that the ones in our compound who received their admission notices all took exams for universities in our province? For schools within our own city, the mailings are coming more quickly.
Aunt Cuihua’s third child, Xu Miao, got into our city’s teachers’ college, and even her notice has arrived," Jingqiu said.
"Ah well, I’ll wait."
After arriving at the department store, they walked around the first floor, pulled out their tickets, bought a pound of milk candy, two pounds of white sugar, two pounds of pastries, and two bottles of Maotai Liquor.
All these were prepared by Father Lu using his tickets, to be brought to Capital City as gifts for Jiang Nanzhou’s family.
"Qiuqiu, do you think this looks good?"
In the clothing section, Gao Qing was holding a yellow and blue checked patchwork dress with a turned-over collar, adorned with two rows of false buttons extending down to the hem, where it cinched at the waist with a yellow and blue checked ribbon.
It had the formal feel of a shirt, yet it blended the playfulness of yellow with the elegance of blue—Lu Jingqiu liked it too.
There was also a blue striped dress with a Chinese-style design and puff sleeves.
They both tried on the two dresses.
At last, Lu Jingqiu chose the yellow and blue checkered one, and Gao Qing opted for the tricolor striped Chinese-style one, each item costing over thirty yuan.
Then each bought a pair of little leather shoes, and Lu Jingqiu also picked out some earthy yellow poplin fabric at the fabric counter, planning to go home and make some mid-length shorts.
Having heard this, Gao Qing wanted a pair as well and bought the fabric, then asked Lu Jingqiu to help her make it.
Since Lu Jingqiu had more items with her, the two didn’t eat out.
After returning home, Lu Jingqiu took Gao Qing’s waist measurements and began the cutting process at home.
Gao Qing rode her bike out and brought back a dish of braised pork, a dish of stir-fried green vegetables, and two steamed buns.
Lu Jingqiu knew how to make clothes, a skill her mother had taught her the year before. Plus, taking care of Gao Shu’s two children in the past life, she had picked up some sewing machine skills.
She even made herself a set of cotton half-skirts for the New Year, and it turned out quite successfully.
Making shorts now was a breeze for her; she made them to stop just above the knees, not too long nor too short.
They looked good paired with a white shirt or a short-sleeved top.
In just one afternoon, the two pairs of shorts were complete.
Gao Qing was astounded as she tried them on, "These look really good, and they’d go well with People’s Liberation Army shoes or leather shoes. Qiuqiu, how did you come up with this?"
"What’s there to think about? I have to take a train when I go out, and skirts are inconvenient, trousers are too hot, this is just right."
"Right."
As the two were discussing the newly made shorts, Gao Da’s excited voice suddenly came from the doorway.
"Little sister, hurry home, our acceptance letters have arrived."
Hearing the voice, Gao Qing quickly ran out of the house, "Third Brother, what did you say, the letters have arrived?"
Gao Da’s face was suffused with restrained excitement, pushing his glasses up on his nose, "I got into Capital University of Political Science and Law."
Gao Qing laughed, "What about mine?"
"I didn’t open yours, you should go home and open it yourself."
Lu Jingqiu, seeing how fast Gao Qing bolted out like a rabbit, hastily closed the door behind her, "I want to see too."
The excited group raced over to Gao Qing’s house, and upon opening the envelope, "Capital Dance Academy, wow, I got in, I got in!"
Gao Qing jumped three feet high in joy, while Lu Jingqiu and Gao Da stood by, smiling foolishly.
The Gao Family had produced three, no, accurately speaking, four university students—the wife of Gao Shu was also part of the Gao Family. As the adults gradually returned home and heard the news, the house erupted into excitement.
Those who were friendly with Father Gao eagerly suggested that he should treat everyone to a celebration.
The next day in the office, Father Lu teased, "Chief Gao, you can’t escape this time. The feast has to be extravagant, or we won’t be satisfied."
Father Gao, also buoyant with success, chuckled, "Of course, I’ll host, let’s start preparing in the next few days. Old Lu, you can’t escape either. Your Jingqiu is also a university student."
"Our family has only one, unlike yours, all four at once, you have no choice but to treat."
Father Gao only said that knowing Qiuqiu was going to visit her in-laws; while he might miss out on Old Lu’s delicious dishes, Old Lu’s fine liquor surely couldn’t be omitted from him.
That afternoon, he pulled Lu Xianrun along with a few leaders to the cafeteria and set up a table, even taking Old Lu’s privately stashed liquor from the office. Fortunately, everyone showed restraint and nobody got drunk.
