Chapter 703: Chapter 699: Worries (2)_2
In this big compound, it wasn’t only Old Master Xiao who envied the Situ family and the bustle of activity at the Loo family’s home. Sons, daughters-in-law, grandsons, and granddaughters would all come home whenever they had time, which was quite unlike their own ungrateful children, who were never to be seen unless it was a major event or an important holiday.
All those old masters and madams knew that the lively atmosphere at the Situ and Loo families was largely thanks to their cherished gem, Situ Xin. Each one of them wished desperately that she was part of their family.
Previously, those old masters and madams in the compound with grandsons around Situ Xin’s age had all calculated on getting their grandsons to marry Situ Xin. But before they could make a move, Xiao Muli had beaten them to it. Now Old Master Xiao, whenever he went out, received an earful from the other old masters and madams. However, even as Old Master Xiao was scolded, the smile on his face grew even wider.
The moment Xiao Muli’s car appeared at the Situ family’s doorway, Situ Xin heard it. Not just Situ Xin, but also Old Master Situ and Old Master Loo heard it too. Upon hearing the sound of the car, the two old masters knew it was Xiao Muli, the man who had snatched their precious gem right before their eyes.
The two old masters both let out a sound of displeasure. In contrast, Old Master Xiao’s eyes crinkled with laughter; he was very satisfied with his grandson’s actions. Old Master Xiao thought to himself, if his grandson could act a little quicker and settle the matter of marrying Situ Xin and then give him a great-grandson or great-granddaughter, then all the better.
Old Master Xiao imagined that he could see a little baby as adorable and beautiful as Situ Xin calling him "Great Grandpa."
Situ Xin, on the other hand, had grown accustomed to Xiao Muli’s punctual visits every day. It wasn’t just her; the women of both the Situ and Loo families had become used to Xiao Muli’s daily arrivals. And now, Xiao Muli had just stepped through the Situ family’s front gate.
Old Madam Situ greeted Xiao Muli with a smile, "Muli, you’re off work, eh? Come in, come in. The cakes that Baby made are ready. Have some to fill your stomach first."
No sooner had Old Madam Situ finished speaking than a clearly disdainful "hmph" from Old Master Situ followed. "That cake was made by Baby for us old fellows. How could this young man, Muli, compete with us old men for food?"
"Exactly, exactly. We old men need the food to stave off hunger. A young man like Muli doesn’t need to eat these things," chimed in Old Master Loo in support. Meanwhile, Old Master Xiao, grinning from ear to ear, took a piece of the cake made by Situ Xin and put it in his mouth. He didn’t speak up for his grandson Xiao Muli; instead, he savored the cake made by Situ Xin with a look of pure enjoyment.
As he ate, he commented, "Mmm, it’s made by our Xiao Xin, after all. The taste is simply delicious. What are those chefs out there even making? Xiao Xin, you’ve spoiled Grandpa Xiao’s taste now. You’ve got to take responsibility."
Old Master Situ, looking at Xiao Muli who had taken his beloved granddaughter, and then at Old Master Xiao who was eating with relish, could feel his anger rising at the pair of them, adding to his frustration. Childishly, he reached out and snatched the cake from the coffee table, "This cake is what Baby made for me and Old Lu,"
"Hey, come on, Situ. Don’t be so petty. Xiao Xin made quite a lot; you and Old Lu couldn’t possibly eat it all. Let me have some," protested Old Master Xiao as he saw Old Master Situ whisk the desserts away. He wouldn’t normally be this courteous in asking, but since he had his eyes on getting his grandson to marry Situ Xin sooner, he used a persuasive tone with Old Master Situ. Otherwise, Old Master Xiao would have just grabbed it already.
While Old Master Xiao was talking to Old Master Situ, he shot a stern glance at Xiao Muli, the look in his eyes conveying the message: "You, young man, better step up. Marry Xiao Xin soon. If you waste all my effort, see how I deal with you."
"Alright, old man, how can you still be so possessive over food like a child?" Old Madam Situ, seeing her husband getting more and more unreasonable, quickly went over to stop him, and put the cake back on the coffee table. "You listen to me—if you keep this up, believe it or not, I’ll have Baby stop making cakes for you."
"You old woman, always fussing over outsiders," grumbled Old Master Situ, unhappy that the cake was taken from his hands and put back on the table, glaring at Old Master Xiao as he snatched two pieces for himself. But all he could do was seethe silently; there was nothing else he could do.
Regarding the so-called minor conflicts between the old masters, Situ Xin chose to pretend she hadn’t seen anything. She didn’t want to get involved; she knew that could backfire. Besides, Situ Xin thought that old people needed to be this way to have some liveliness and remain healthy.
Taking advantage of the old masters’ attention being elsewhere, Situ Xin reached out and tugged at Xiao Muli, then leaned into him and whispered, "Muli, is something bothering you?" Situ Xin had not used any special abilities but had noticed from his eyes when he came in that Xiao Muli had something on his mind today.
"Yes, I am troubled about something," Xiao Muli replied. He didn’t ask how Situ Xin had noticed; in fact, having Situ Xin realize he had worries was all part of his plan, as it served his purpose.
