Chapter 608: Chapter 608 Exploring the Depths (1)_1
Over the years, the supreme leader saw clearly that the Situ Family and the Loo Family had no covetous eyes on his position. Instead, they were families that actually helped him to secure his hold on it.
With the support of the Situ and Loo Families to counter those restless under him, he was able to maintain his seat of power. And during these years, getting along with Situ Xin, he truly treated her as a junior family member to be cherished. Sometimes, he envied Situ Haotian for having such a beautiful and capable daughter.
After being hung up on by Situ Xin, the supreme leader picked up the phone on his desk and dialed his secretary’s extension, instructing her to go down and escort Situ Xin to his office personally.
Following the supreme leader’s secretary, Situ Xin arrived at the leader’s office. "Miss Situ, please come in. The Chairman is waiting for you inside."
"Alright," Situ Xin nodded to the supreme leader’s secretary and pushed the door open to enter.
Hearing the knock, the supreme leader knew it was Situ Xin. He stood up after saying, "Come in," and with a smile, as Situ Xin entered, said, "I told you, girl, you have a pass that lets you come straight in. You don’t use it and always call me."
"Well, every time I come here, it’s an emergency, and I forget to bring the pass," said Situ Xin, consciously diverting the conversation from the fact that the pass was always with her in her Personal Space.
"So, what’s the emergency this time?" understanding the implication in Situ Xin’s words, the supreme leader did not linger on the topic and went straight to the point.
"I’m not going to beat around the bush," Situ Xin straightened her back against the couch as she spoke.
"When have you ever beaten around the bush with me? Go ahead, speak your mind. In the officialdom, people usually talk in circles, and I have to mull over everything I hear. Although I am used to this way of communication after so many years, it’s still exhausting," reflected the supreme leader. However, when he spoke with Situ Xin, there was no need for such caution, which was why he enjoyed dealing with her.
"You’re aware of the kidnapping of the grandson of our Xiangjiang compatriot who came back to invest, aren’t you?" Situ Xin started.
"Yes, I’m aware. Wasn’t the case handed over to The Dark Division for investigation? What’s the result now?" He knew about the case since it involved Xiangjiang, and his subordinates reported it to him immediately. Xiangjiang might have returned to the motherland, but tensions with the mainland persisted, and any trouble for Xiangjiang residents in the mainland could be inflated by some, potentially increasing dissatisfaction among them towards the homeland.
"Indeed, we have thoroughly investigated. This event is not only related to individuals but also to other countries." Situ Xin looked at the supreme leader, watching his expression of surprise upon hearing her words.
"It involves other countries? Which ones?" The supreme leader was genuinely surprised. What he thought was a simple case of vengeance or a kidnapping for money was actually linked to international actors.
"Country Y, Country Z. However, we do not have hard evidence to take to the United Nations to accuse them. This incident is connected to the list you had us retrieve. Someone has spread the rumor that our Situ Family has that list, leading people from Countries Y and Z to believe it and target us. They tried to use Qin Jialiang, the deputy mayor of Capital City, to eliminate my brother Situ Jin as a warning to our family," Situ Xin stared unblinkingly at the supreme leader, reading the subtlest of changes in his eyes. Despite his seasoned ability to mask his expressions, she saw every nuance clearly. "That list has long been in your hands. What do you plan to do with it?" What Situ Xin did not openly ask was, what was his plan for the people on that list?
Having completed the task given to The Dark Division by the supreme leader in obtaining that list, and having handed it over, Situ Xin considered the matter closed, keeping only a copy for contingencies.
She had not planned to concern herself with what the supreme leader would do with the list or those named on it. But now, those countries, the people on that list, had targeted her family because of it. Having touched on her raw nerve, she was not going to be polite.
She was there to inquire about the supreme leader’s intentions. If he had any plans, she would gladly cooperate. But if he planned to lock the list away in a safe, she was ready to take matters into her own hands.
The supreme leader did not expect Situ Xin to bring up the list, let alone directly ask how he intended to handle it. He knew his confidants were aware of the list, but not one of them had dared to address it so blatantly.
The list was like a thorn stuck in his throat, neither going down nor coming out. With the evidence of crimes listed for each person, he could only act on the bottom rung, unable to touch the upper echelons—a reality he could not yet change.
Instead of answering Situ Xin’s question, the supreme leader deflected, "Girl, what are you thinking?"
"I originally had no particular thoughts about the list. It was up to you how to handle it. But now, with people foolishly using it to target my family, I’ll fulfill their wish. If you have any thoughts or are already executing a plan that involves the list, I will not disrupt it. But if you’re just holding on to the list without using it, then I’ll have to act by my own means," Situ Xin’s stance was firmly unyielding.
