Chapter 167: Chapter 167: As the Water Recedes, the Rocks Emerge (1)_1
On the ride back home, Old Master Situ shared a car with Situ Xin. After getting into the car, Old Master Situ asked Situ Xin, "Baby, what you said earlier, do you still have evidence of the things the Jia Family did behind the scenes?"
After thinking for a moment, Situ Xin answered, "Yes, those were given to me by my master. He said that if the Jia Family goes too far, to bring out this evidence." In truth, the real Situ Xin hadn’t handed over the evidence to Old Master Situ because she had seen that despite not getting along with Old Master Jia and Old Master Jia scheming against the Situ Family this time, Old Master Situ still did not have the intention to utterly destroy the Jia Family.
Situ Xin also understood that Old Master Situ was holding onto old affections, otherwise he wouldn’t have let Old Master Jia target their Situ Family like this. And Situ Xin wouldn’t have refrained from cutting the weeds and digging up the roots this time, because according to her usual style of doing things, she would have definitely wiped out the Jia Family.
Of course, sparing the Jia Family this time was partly due to her grandfather, Old Master Situ’s reason, but also, after her investigation, though Old Master Jia sometimes targeted their Situ Family and this time was rather excessive, the other occasions counted as minor skirmishes. Most importantly, the Jia Family had no connections with several external powers. Situ Xin knew that if they pulled the Jia Family down now, in the best-case scenario, they could arrange for a clean and reputable family to take their place. If it turned out worse, those who might replace the Jia Family could be individuals tied to a certain country.
This was something Situ Xin least wanted to see. So, it could be said that the Jia Family was quite fortunate.
"Then when you return, bring that document to me," Old Master Situ said after a moment of silence, upon hearing Situ Xin’s words.
"Alright, Grandpa," Situ Xin agreed.
No sooner had Situ Xin and the rest arrived home than the family’s phone rang. Old Master Situ answered the call; it was Old Deng calling. Ever since Situ Xin cured Old Deng’s illness and he recognized her as his goddaughter, Old Deng made calls to the Situ Family from time to time.
Just now, Old Deng had returned from an inspection trip, as Xiangjiang was about to be returned to the country soon, and there was an increase in affairs to attend to outside. Being a primary leader, Old Deng became busier.
Situ Xin was aware of this too; in recent times, several foreign countries had been restless, especially Country Y. They were not launching direct attacks but were causing trouble in Country H behind the scenes. However, since these incidents did not involve her family, and she trusted that the leaders of Country H were no pushovers and could handle it well, she hadn’t intervened.
Today, as soon as Old Deng got back, he heard about Situ Haoran’s rumors of having an illegitimate daughter outside and couldn’t wait to make a call. "I say Situ, what’s going on? I come back and hear Haoran has an illegitimate daughter?" It was well known that personal conduct was of great importance in military and political circles, and many had been demoted because of it. So, when Old Deng heard the news, his eyebrows had yet to relax. "I say, Haoran doesn’t seem like the sort of person to engage in such nonsense," Old Deng added without waiting for Old Master Situ’s response.
"Old Deng, this matter is purely a misunderstanding," Old Master Situ clarified the whole story, including how Situ Haoran went to the hospital to do paternity tests twice and how they planned against Old Master Jia. Yet, Old Master Situ kept the part about the evidence document given by Situ Xin’s master from Old Deng.
"So that’s what happened," Old Deng said with relief after hearing Old Master Situ’s explanation. He had high hopes for Old Master Situ’s sons, even planning to assign them important duties in the future. If the rumors about Situ Haoran having an illegitimate daughter were true, that could have spelt the end of his military and political career.
"Old Deng, I think you should wait a while longer to speak with Old Master Jia. I believe he should be quite busy at the moment," Old Master Situ suggested, remembering the chaotic scene earlier and sighing involuntarily. Yet, he felt vindicated inside. Although he didn’t plan to crush the Jia Family, not teaching them a lesson would leave him feeling stifled.
"Alright, then I’ll wait a while, until he’s less busy," Old Deng replied after discussing the official matters and then remembered his goddaughter. Ever since he recognized her, work kept him from seeing Situ Xin again, and now that he had some free time, he found himself missing the little one. "How’s Xiao Xin? It’s been a long time since we last spoke."
As soon as Old Master Situ heard Old Deng’s words, he understood what he meant and quickly called Situ Xin, who had been sitting casually on the sofa, over to the phone. Picking up the receiver, Situ Xin sweetly greeted, "Grandpa Deng." Since her rebirth, Situ Xin had increasingly learned how to bring joy to the elderly.
Clearly, Old Deng was charmed by Situ Xin’s sweet "Grandpa Deng" and, after receiving reassurance from Old Master Situ, felt very content. Although many people around him cared for his health, most had ulterior motives, and while some expressed concern verbally, one couldn’t be sure what they were thinking inside.
"I sure have, Grandpa Deng. How’s your health been lately? I know you’re busy, but you have to take care of your own body," cautioned Situ Xin, mindful of Old Deng’s age and the intensity of his work. But as soon as she finished speaking, she heard Old Deng’s personal physician on the other end of the line urging Old Deng to take his medication.
"Grandpa Deng, are you sick?" Situ Xin asked with a frown, not wishing to see the life she had worked hard to save wasted because of the patient’s carelessness.
"Hehe, girl, your Grandpa Deng isn’t sick, just a little cold," Old Deng replied to Situ Xin’s concern, feeling warmth inside. Though many were concerned about his health, most had some agenda, and who knows what some genuinely thought despite their outward concern.
"A cold is still an illness. Alright, I’ll come and see you in a while," Situ Xin said, hanging up before Old Deng could reply. Listening to the "beep beep beep" from the phone, Old Deng shook his head helplessly but was smiling.
