Chapter 136: Chapter 136 Recovery, Trouble Brewing (3)_1
Situ Xin really wanted to roll her eyes and say, "Don’t all of you have kids? Why not go pinch your own children’s cheeks." However, this was just an inward rant of Situ Xin’s, something she’d never actually say. After all, their children were all around seventeen or eighteen years old, and it wouldn’t be proper to pinch the cheeks of kids that big.
However, there were benefits to accepting godparents as well; Situ Xin received many gifts, and many of them were quite valuable. Although she already had plenty in her Personal Space, she would never complain about having too much of a good thing. Hence, when receiving gifts, her mouth almost stretched to her ears with a broad smile.
After the godparent ceremony was over, Situ Xin truly relaxed, with nothing much to do. Her mother’s arranged leave for her had yet to end, and she was looking forward to a good, lazy sleep.
But dreams are beautiful, and reality is cruel. That night, after the ceremony, as Situ Xin lay in bed ready to sleep, she felt that something had been off recently. Because she had been so busy with Old Deng’s matters, she hadn’t had the time to reflect, but now that she had the time, she calmed down and began to think things through meticulously.
"Oh right, Xia Yujie hasn’t called me recently." Situ Xin realized what she had been overlooking. Usually, Xia Yujie would call her almost every day to report on Dragon Society matters and the training of his subordinates. Even when he was busy, he would find the time to update her. But these past few days were disturbingly unusual.
A bad premonition grew inside Situ Xin, and with that thought, all her sleepiness vanished. She hurriedly sat up. "Master, why are you getting up? Are you going into the space?" Baibai, who had been comfortably nestled next to Situ Xin preparing for bed, was startled awake.
"No, I’ve got something to take care of, I’ll tell you about it later," Situ Xin said as she picked up her phone—a model that Xia Yujie had gotten for her when the newest version was released—and dialed his number.
But after her call connected, it kept ringing without answer, until she was met with a busy tone. Situ Xin’s sense of foreboding grew stronger.
Next, Situ Xin called Liu Yuxiang. It didn’t take long before the call was answered. "Hello, Master?" came Liu Yuxiang’s low and fatigued voice over the line, which lacked his usual liveliness.
"Liu Yuxiang, what happened at Dragon Society? I’ve been calling Xia Yujie, and no one is picking up. Your voice also sounds very off," Situ Xin asked bluntly. She disliked beating around the bush, especially when the matter was urgent.
"Ah Jie was attacked last night on his way home from Dragon Society. He was shot and is currently in the emergency ward at the hospital," Liu Yuxiang admitted, despite Xia Yujie’s previous insistence on not telling Situ Xin about recent events. Liu Yuxiang knew Xia Yujie’s thoughts well—he wanted to prove himself to Situ Xin.
It wasn’t that Xia Yujie harbored any resentment toward Situ Xin. On the contrary, Situ Xin held significant weight in his heart. Not only had she saved his life, but she also helped him avenge his family, reclaim his property, and gave him the chance to stand up again. Because of how important Situ Xin was to him, Xia Yujie was all the more concerned about how he appeared in her eyes—he wanted to earn her respect.
"A new Underworld power surfaced in Capital City a few days ago and has teamed up with several local gangs expressly to target Dragon Society. From our intelligence, Ah Jie found out that this power comes from a gang in The South, a force that rose in recent years. We don’t know who’s backing them, but they have access to some sophisticated weapons," Liu Yuxiang paused here, expecting Situ Xin to respond, but she remained silent on the other end. He continued, "Though this gang’s weaponry is quite modern, it still falls short of Dragon Society’s arsenal, and Dragon Society’s current strength is not what it used to be. So, in these recent firefights, we’ve been at a disadvantage, even losing a lot of manpower. What we didn’t expect was their cunning—they hired a sniper to ambush Ah Jie on his way home."
As Liu Yuxiang reached this point, Situ Xin’s silence made his heart skip a beat, worried that his master was angry because they’d hidden the incident. He hastily added, "Master, please don’t be angry. Ah Jie didn’t want to tell you not because he doesn’t trust you, or is guarding against you. You should know how important you are to him. He wanted to use this incident to prove his abilities to you, to show that he is capable and deserves to be by your side."
How could Situ Xin not understand Xia Yujie’s intentions? She was a bit angry that he’d been hurt and still hadn’t called her. Her previous silence was while she digested the information Liu Yuxiang had provided. "I’m not angry. How is Yujie doing right now?" She was quite worried about Xia Yujie’s condition, as being shot by a sniper wasn’t something to take lightly.
"The bullet hit his abdomen, and it has been extracted. Although it didn’t strike any vital parts, the doctors triggered a major hemorrhage while removing the bullet. The bleeding has temporarily stopped, but they said Ah Jie’s condition is very bad," Liu Yuxiang’s voice fell again as he spoke of Xia Yujie’s condition.
Upon hearing Liu Yuxiang’s words, Situ Xin felt her anger rise sharply. She truly regarded Liu Yuxiang and Xia Yujie as her disciples, and being fiercely protective, she was infuriated that her disciple was hospitalized with his life in danger while she was only now being informed. "Liu Yuxiang, are you an idiot? With Xia Yujie in this condition, why didn’t you call me sooner? What, were you planning to wait until he was dead to tell me?" Situ Xin shouted into the phone, leaving Liu Yuxiang on the other end speechless.
"Is Xia Yujie in Dragon Society’s hospital?" Situ Xin asked. This hospital was one she had instructed Xia Yujie to acquire the year before last. She had her reasons; those in the Underworld often got hurt, and typically wouldn’t dare seek treatment at regular hospitals, leading to aggravated conditions. Of course, another reason was that the hospital industry was very profitable.
