However, Sheng Fei couldn’t bear to see him like this. He moved closer. “Ren-er, I—”

“Don’t call me that.” Hua Ren snapped sharply, stepping forward, putting distance between them. The closer Sheng Fei got, the more his glands throbbed. The faster his heart beat and the more his body yearned to turn, to respond to it’s Alpha’s call. He cursed the way his body reacted due to the mark. Would he feel like this forever? Compelled to crave his Alpha? Wanting to be with him at every single moment?

Sheng Fei was just a few steps away and he was already having a hard time controlling his body. Memories of the night before resurfaced, his moans, his desperate pleas, the heat, the mind spinning kisses and the spine tingling pleasure. It was overwhelming and he understood how easy it was to be swept away by it all.

He cursed, shaking his head. He could remember things more clearly now and he knew that what happened wasn’t in his control. Nor was it in Sheng Fei’s but he just couldn’t help but be angry.

Sheng Fei let out a slow, tired sigh. “Are you really going to starve yourself over what happened? You know you haven’t eaten for days.”

“I’ll eat,” Hua Ren replied coolly. “After I deal with the bandits. I’ll earn my pay and buy my own meal. I will not be dependent on you.”

“You don’t have to be,” Sheng Fei said quietly. He moved again, but this time he turned, placing himself directly in front of Hua Ren, blocking the wind with his body. “I am your Alpha, your mate, the one chosen for you by fate so why are you even angry that I marked you?” He couldn’t understand and he was trying so hard to not let his mind spiral. After all, he knew he wasn’t the one that truly resided in his own omega’s heart.

“I am not trying to snatch your freedom, Hua Ren.” He added. “That’s not what being marked is about.”

Hua Ren’s eyes flashed. “What is it about then? Hm? Tell me. What is it about? Isn’t that what all you Alphas want? For your omegas to be dependent on you? To be quiet, obedient, submissive. You want someone to worship you, someone to make your whole life feel complete while we erase our own. You want your omegas to stay at home, playing the role of perfect little wives, have your perfect little children then dedicate their lives to taking care of them. You want your omegas to be your slaves, never having the chance to dream, to live their own lives. Isn’t that what you want?”

Sheng Fei stared, stunned.

“You want to tame me,” Hua Ren spat. “You can’t take the fact that your mate, the one chosen for you, is a general. A fighter. You want to use this mark to control me.” He touched the spot, wincing a bit at the soreness. “You want to make me submit to you. Well, let me make this clear, Sheng Fei. You marked the wrong omega. I will never be your perfect little submissive wife.”

He had heard stories. He had seen some happen before his very eyes. The way omegas devote their lives to their families. He didn’t say it was a bad thing. After all, his mother did the same but life was only good if you had a good Alpha. His mother was lucky. His father was open-minded and allowed his mother to live the way she wanted. He allowed her to indulge in her hobbies and even get involved in the family businesses but he had seen the majority of omegas suffer. Some were used by their own Alphas as sex slaves. Their only job was to please their Alpha and if they didn’t, they would get beaten.

He had put so many of such cruel Alphas in prison but he had to release them some days after because marked omegas could not live without their Alphas. They constantly crave their Alphas, wanting to be close to them, to smell their pheromones and Hua Ren didn’t want that for himself. He didn’t want to be enslaved by that feeling.

Sheng Fei stood frozen, stunned by the weight of Hua Ren’s words. “Do you think so little of me, Hua Ren?” he asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper, disbelief shadowing his face. “Is that really how you see me?”

Hua Ren scoffed, turning his face away. “None of you Alphas can be trusted.”

Look at the Emperor for example. Even after so many years of service and his undying devotion, the Emperor didn’t think twice before drugging him and trying to mark him, to take away his freedom. He could never forget the look of pure lust in the Emperor’s eyes and it infuriated him.

Now it was Sheng Fei. And although, to some extent, it could be considered okay since Sheng Fei was his mate, it still didn’t sit well with him.

“I am not like other Alphas,” Sheng Fei said, and this time, he reached out, seizing Hua Ren by the shoulders, not painfully but firmly.

Hua Ren’s breath caught, not expecting the sudden contact. For someone with senses sharper than a blade, he was so dull and slow when it came to Sheng Fei. If it were any other person, he or she would have their arms broken by now.

And this spoke volumes to Hua Ren. Could he have already developed a soft spot for this Alpha?

The sudden contact sparked something wild inside him and his knees weakened, making him wobble slightly but Sheng Fei kept him steady. The warmth in Sheng Fei’s palms seemed to seep through the layers of fabric, into his skin, into his bones. And his scent, that rich herby scent and musk curled around him like a drug.

As a freshly marked omega, he knew it was natural to feel this... pull, this longing, but he didn’t know what to do about it.

Sheng Fei wasn’t faring much better. Just touching Hua Ren tested the limits of his control. Every fiber of his being wanted to draw him closer, press his lips to that stubborn, scowling mouth he’d memorized too well over the past few nights. And when the breeze lifted Hua Ren’s veil, exposing those soft pale pink lips, parted and glistening in the moonlight, desire surged through him like a wave. His body reacted instantly, but he forced it down, anchored himself with sheer will.

It wasn’t time for that. He needed to make Hua Ren feel safe. Despite how strong Hua Ren claimed to be, he was still an omega with omega instincts.
