The raise of Maureen Smith and her Good Luck System -
Chapter 98: I will save Liam over anyone
Chapter 98: I will save Liam over anyone
The night was very dark. Maureen couldn’t catch up with him.
She couldn’t help but stop in her tracks. "Liam," Maureen called out.
The sense of wrong spilled from her tingling nose. It was a sentiment she wouldn’t feel for others.
"I..." Maureen didn’t know what to say.
They had not seen each other for a few days, and all of a sudden, he became a stranger. Moreover, she could tell that Liam was avoiding her, even though she didn’t know why.
But Maureen couldn’t help but stop him. Many feelings were sour and tingling.
Finally, those feelings permeated her brain, and the words that escaped her lips were: "My shoelaces are untied."
It was as if the air had frozen, the moonlight was trembling, and the tree shadows on the ground were shaking in the wind.
Liam suddenly stopped. His tall figure moved, and his shoulders hinted at a turn.
In that moment, Everything seemed to slow down. Liam turned his head and looked at Maureen.
He was quiet and suddenly began to walk back. After a couple steps, he lowered his head and began to run towards her.
Surrounded by silence, Maureen watched him.
The sound of his shoes stepping on the ground seemed to creep into Maureen’s heart, step by step.
Liam came running back, his jet-black hair revealing silence and a sense of abandonment. She didn’t want him anymore, but if she called out, he would still return.
He squatted down, tying Maureen’s loose shoelaces.
He tied them very slowly.
Maureen lowered her eyes, breaking the silence, "Did you come to celebrate my birthday?"
"Um."
Liam murmured in response.
After tying her shoelaces, he stood up.
Maureen looked up at him.
Today’s Liam was a little different from usual, perhaps it was because he changed to black hair.
His eyebrows and eyes seemed heavy, his usual arrogant aura was absent, only left was the youthful aura of compromise and determination.
He looked over her shoulder.
Maureen instinctively followed his gaze and turned her head.
As he watched Maureen’s turning motion, he stiffened, whispering, "After others finish celebrating your birthday, I’ll help you make the most of the rest of your day, no matter how late it is, could you call me later?"
"I’ll wait for you."
Liam had resigned himself to the most humble position.
"Maureen! You can’t leave."
Richard came storming over from behind a hotel past Maureen.
Only then did Maureen realize what she was holding in her other hand—it was a transparent crystal box, with a gold medal inside.
He wanted to give this to her.
"I meant what I said," Richard said firmly,
"What I told Aunt Donald that day."
Liam saw it as well.
He subconsciously glanced at Maureen, his throat moved once.
He resisted the surge of anger and jealousy visible in his eyes, turns, and planned to walk away.
He could not continue to watch, for fear of what he might do.
"Wait."
But Maureen grabbed his wrist.
Maureen was afraid that he would run away.
Maureen wasn’t sure whether Liam liked her, or only treated her as a junior.
But instinctively, she wanted to clear Richard from their relationship in front of him.
Even if he hadn’t realized his feelings, even if he still thought of her as a junior, she didn’t want him to misunderstand.
Liam was stiff all over, he did not turn back. In his heart, he wondered if she wanted him to stay and watch Richard confess to her?
Or did she want them to celebrate the birthday together?
With a cold heart, Liam thought despairingly, the little mask really has no heart.
However, the next second.
What he heard was — "I’m sorry, I don’t want to celebrate the birthday with you." Liam was disoriented, what was she saying to him?
It was like he was a stiff slab of stone, plunging straight downwards, as if into a nightmare.
He took a deep breath, slowly turned his head to look at Maureen.
But Maureen was looking at Richard.
Wait, what?
The next words Maureen said to Richard were: "Richard, I’m sorry.
I’ve told you several times already that I stopped liking you before I switched classes."
"A few days ago, Aunt Donald insisted on having us eat together.
Out of respect for my elders, I didn’t say it out loud."
"But I went and explained it to Aunt Donald afterwards.
From now on, she should respect my opinion and not push us to be together anymore."
With each sentence she uttered, Richard’s face grew a little paler.
However, Liam was utterly stunned at first, then his blood gradually rushed back, his pale face slowly regaining some color.
His mind was buzzing, his heart was thumping - was Little Mask refusing Richard? Wasn’t she rejecting him? Was she really refusing Richard?
Did she say she stopped liking Richard before she switched classes?
Liam’s sanity gradually returned, his freezing limbs slowly regaining feeling.
She said she doesn’t like Richard.
"I disliked you even before I changed classes."
So early? -- Liam realized he almost laughed out loud, and quickly tightened his lips.
"So, please take back your birthday gift and cake. I don’t like you."
Maureen was firm, even frosty.
"If you continue to be this way in the future, we don’t even need to be friends."
Richard looked extremely displeased. Even though he had anticipated Maureen’s current avoidance, it was unexpected that she would also be unwilling to celebrate her birthday with him as a friend.
Why did things turn out this way? ...
He wanted to say something else but Maureen took Liam and left. ...
As Liam was dragged away by Maureen at this moment, he felt like an old TV set that has been out of repair for years, recalling what Maureen said to Richard over and over again.
With every repetition, he completely lost control and the corners of his mouth unconsciously turned upward.
His heart rate has reached its peak, with blood surging towards his forehead time and again. He felt as light as a feather.
If he wasn’t being held, he might just float away.
"Little Mask, you—" With sparkling eyes, Maureen held his hand, "Liam let’s celebrate my birthday."
Warmth immediately spread from his palm, thawing Liam’s frozen blood.
It seemed that all the sorrow from the past few days was scattered with this sentence. What she’d said was ’Liam, let’s celebrate my birthday.
’ And not, ’Richard, let’s celebrate my birthday.’
Did that imply that for her, Richard was now just a random passerby A! Passerby B! Passerby C! Passerby D! Liam reaffirmed this in his mind.
Suddenly, Liam asked: "Is there a playground nearby?" Maureen: ? Liam wanted to run three hundred laps around the playground.
He kept a straight face, desperately trying not to seem as happy as a victorious national football team.
"So where have you been these last few days?"
"I was confined by my grandfather," Liam was too shy to admit that he’d seen her, Richard, and the Donald family dining in a western restaurant, and went to sulk in a hidden place. ...
Half an hour later, Maureen was wearing Liam’s coat and accompanied him to a private room in a luxury hotel.
The room was filled with pink, egg-yolk yellow, and azure balloons, with "Happy 18th Birthday" stuck on the window.
The largest cake was pushed out by Laurel and Josephine.
Niel and Drake were both present. Drake was dragged out while he was sleeping.
On recognizing the surprise, Maureen, unable to control her emotions, complained, "I thought you all forgot my birthday."
"How could we?" Niel exaggeratedly exclaimed, "How could we forget our beloved Maureen...?"
He was abruptly cut off as Liam stomped on his foot. His face twisted in a grimace.
Everyone sat around the cake. Since it wasn’t yet midnight, they couldn’t blow out the candles or slice the cake.
Leaning lazily in the corner, Drake glanced at Maureen.
Following her line of sight, he fixed his gaze on Liam. He smirked slyly and suggested, "Let’s play a round of Truth or Dare."
The atmosphere suddenly warmed up.
Unable to resist, Maureen’s gaze landed on Liam.
She noticed that he had dyed his hair black, which left her feeling slightly disappointed.
His red hair looked great too. But regardless of hair color, his charisma remained unaltered, and he was still very striking.
Seeing him made her heart skip a beat. Once she realized her feelings for Liam, she started to see the good in him. Liam sat next to Maureen.
His temporary sorrow and resentfulness had painted a blush all over his ears.
What’s going on? Why does he feel like the look in her eyes towards him has somehow changed? Was it his illusion again? Or was he just being narcissistic? The first bottle spun towards Maureen.
Drake glanced at Liam, then at Maureen, and unexpectedly asked, "Maureen, my question is, if Liam and Richard both fell into the river, who would you save?"
Liam’s body was taut, and he couldn’t help but glare at him, signaling with his eyes, ’Are you tired of living to ask such a question? Maureen just finished his last crush, of course, he would choose Richard.
Are you deliberately provoking?’ However, he didn’t expect Maureen to blurt out without thinking: "I would save Liam."
"..." ??? Liam incredulously looked at Maureen, his mind going blank.
Drake seemed half mocking, the second bottle deftly spun in his hand, once again pointing to Maureen: "The second question is also for you, Maureen - Does Liam look better with red or black hair?"
Liam became nervous once again. Maureen would definitely choose black, right? But then he heard Maureen’s answer: "As long as it’s Liam, he looks good in any way."
Everyone in the room: " That’s what Maureen was thinking, so he said it out loud.
Her gaze stuck on Liam’s face.
It had been a week since they last met, so she couldn’t help but take a few more glances at him.
Niel said, "Maureen, you’re quite good at sucking up, huh?"
Amidst this cheerful atmosphere, Liam’s cheeks grew warmer under the gaze of Maureen, his heart almost felt like it was going to explode.
Thump, thump, thump.
His hand tightened in his pocket, his face blushed, what’s going on?
Has Maureen suddenly become so forward? Drake immediately followed up with the third question: "If both Niel and I fall into the water at the same time, who would you save?"
Maureen, whose thoughts were all on Liam, instinctively said: "I would save Liam."
The whole room suddenly fell silent.
An awkward atmosphere spread.
Niel couldn’t help but yell, "Liam wasn’t an option for this question!!"
" Maureen slowly realized and uttered, "Ah, then I, then I would save Niel."
Niel: ... What’s with this slight hesitation??
"This... it’s just an irresistible personal charm," the cool and arrogant Liam returned.
He tried hard to suppress the overwhelming joy reflected in his increasingly upturned lips.
However, the joy in his heart revived, furiously flapping like a small bird.
It couldn’t help but crazily flap its wings, as though it wanted to do three hundred push-ups.
He already revealed his overflowing delight.
