Chapter 154: Liam is now a change boy in school
Bianca returned to the company dormitory that day, feeling groggy all along.
The dormitory was shared by six girls, and Bianca bunked on the top, quite close to the dull yellow light bulb hanging from the ceiling.
She could see tiny insects sneaking in from the window, buzzing around the long-uncleaned lampshade.
Bianca recalled her life in the Smith family’s villa, where she never encountered flying insects indoors.
There might be some in the garden, but the gardener hired by Oliver was professional.
He would spray special insect repellents, so even bees were rarely seen in spring.
She endured the hum of the insects, closed her eyes and curled her legs.
However, when she turned over, her foot hit a pile of clothes.
A rush of resentment filled Bianca’s heart.
Her room in the past was bigger than the total size of three dormitory rooms here, and her walk-in closet was over ten square meters.
It was filled with name-brand clothes and accessories she could mix and match.
Back then, she had no clue what the term "financial difficulty" meant.
As long as she desired something, unless it was as pricey as an airplane, the Smith family would buy it for her.
However, here in the dorm, the width of the wardrobe was less than half a meter, far from enough.
Hence, she had to pile most of her clothes on the bed.
Her single bed was totally disordered.
Some of the clothes had even gotten wrinkled, and when worn, reflected none of her former elegance.
She now couldn’t even stretch her legs while sleeping.
Soon, some girls returned from the dance room, slamming the dormitory door with a loud "clang."
One of them had dyed pink hair, wearing sexy denim shorts and a tank top despite it being only March - the beginning of spring.
Another, with indigo-dyed hair dressed in a unisex outfit, held a cigarette in her mouth and a basin full of long-unwashed clothes - now drenched and stinking - in her arms.
Bianca kept her eyes tightly shut and faced the wall.
However, the smell of sweat in the air, the fermenting odor of different clothes squeezed together in a dormitory shared by several people, the smell of nail polish, and the smell of take-out food were all mixed together.
It formed a stench that made her want to retch and penetrate her nostrils.
Bianca gripped the sheets tightly, her stomach churning.
Everything was different from what she had imagined.
Only after leaving Smith’s house did Bianca realize the difficulties of the outside world.
She had signed a contract with her agent, expecting to enter the entertainment industry directly and make a big splash.
But to her surprise, the agent had many girls like her under his wing, even ones who were prettier or danced better.
Moreover, these trainees varied greatly, some of them only had education till primary school.
For instance, Pink Hair always used the same few offensive words –
"pig", "bitch".
The girl with indigo hair was quiet but very dirty, soaking her underwear for nearly two weeks before washing them.
There were only three washing machines for multiple dorms housing dozens of trainees.
After seeing someone throwing their two weeks’ worth of underwear into the washing machine all at once, Bianca could only start hand washing her own.
Witnessing her life plunged into turmoil while Maureen seemed to be sailing smoothly infuriated Bianca, and resentment began building up within her, turning into a strong hatred.
In April, Bianca went to Oliver’s company to find him.
Among all the Smith family members, Oliver had a unique significance to Bianca.
He was the brother she had admired, looked up to, and loved the most since childhood.
While living in the cramped trainee dormitory, she even dreamt of Oliver driving over to pick her up and take her home.
She hoped that out of old affections, Oliver would give her some assistance - be it some money, a word to her entertainment company, or just a word of comfort.
But, contrary to her expectations, after seeking Oliver more than a dozen times, she was rejected by the company’s security eight times, and three times she almost caught up with Oliver’s car but he either did not notice her, or deliberately drove away in front of her.
Until the very last time, Bianca met Oliver in the underground garage.
Oliver was already immensely annoyed by Bianca’s persistent disturbances.
He failed to understand why Bianca sought him out now; anyone with a modicum of self-awareness would stay as far away from his family as possible.
Upon realizing that Bianca was insinuating a demand for money, Oliver almost laughed in disbelief.
"Bianca, understand this clearly; our family doesn’t owe you a thing."
"Your mother was the one who switched the babies, she was the one who shattered our family.
The money we’ve spent on you over the past decade couldn’t have been less than several millions.
Despite that, out of consideration for our former relationship, we haven’t even asked you to pay us back!
I have no idea what you’re thinking, approaching me like this for money."
Oliver’s face was grim.
"The desire for more will swallow a man whole.
If you continue to pester me here, outside my company, I’ll call security!"
Tears streamed down Bianca’s face, as she stopped in front of Oliver’s car, pleading to him,
"Brother, it was my mother who switched the children, but what have I done wrong?"
"Do you think we don’t know who sent the text message that allowed Mrs. Daniel to escape?"
Bianca’s face turned pale.
Full of pent-up anger, Oliver snapped, "Ms Bianca, show some dignity.
You’ve been educated in our family for over a decade, at least try not to turn out like your birth mother!"
With that, Oliver slammed on the accelerator and instructed Bianca,
"Move!"
Bianca was in disbelief that Oliver would treat her like this.
She remained unmoved at first, but Oliver didn’t hesitate and drove straight at her.
It was only when she felt her blood rushing to her head that she managed to escape.
Then, with a turn, Oliver drove off.
Bianca stood there, stunned.
Though it was early May, she felt a chill enveloping her.
The disgust in Oliver’s eyes had been unmistakable.
When Bianca returned to her dormitory in such a distraught state, someone who had heard about what happened to her made a sarcastic remark,
"You have a rich brother, why bother fighting with us over a spot?"
Bianca’s nails dug into her palm, forcefully subduing her urge to shred that girl to pieces.
A moment later, the centrally-managed assistant who came to inspect their rooms reprimanded them not to create any scenes, also not to use too many high-power appliances; it was a season prone to fires.
If they wished to dry their hair with blow dryers that had high power, they should go downstairs.
It was mentioned that a few days ago, a building in the city had caught fire which, though was eventually extinguished, had resulted in losses amounting to millions.
The cause of the fire has yet to be investigated.
"A fire?"
Bianca echoed blankly.
She lifted her gaze onto the tiny flying insect on the ceiling, seemingly deep in thought as she stared at it unblinkingly.
Seeing her odd behavior, the others in the dorm thought she must have had a shock of some kind.
They all got goosebumps, and hence decided to steer clear of her.
=========
Times passed exceptionally fast in the last term of senior grade three.
Just when one’s breath could freeze in the intense winter, the fleeting spring passed, and May was ushered amidst the hustle and bustle.
The classes were extremely intense, including the international class.
Although most of the students were to study abroad, they could still sense the pressing urgency of the final school semester through the hectic pace of the ordinary students in the school canteen.
Since the start of this term, Liam had noticeably reduced his sleeping in class sessions.
The pillow that Maureen gave him had become redundant, he cleaned it and threw it on the sofa at home.
While Maureen was busy solving problems every day, he would lazily prop up his head, don a silver noise-cancelling headphone, flip through a book, or simply vacantly gaze at Maureen.
It was as if her face was blooming with flowers.
Although he wasn’t studying hard now, it was certainly better than provoking trouble during class breaks and sleeping in class, as he did last semester.
For an entire month last month, Liam hadn’t caused any trouble.
This resulted in Teacher Logan receiving his first performance bonus in three years, he was overjoyed to tears.
The underlings in the class were at their wit’s end.
Liam might be regarded as fierce and ill-tempered, but he was the glue that held the entire class together.
Now, he was maturing like a child king who gradually no longer wanted to lead them astray as their ringleader.
Instead, he has become the grown man who would buy his girlfriend ice cream during summer and Worm water during winter.
Their sentimentality was inevitable.
With graduation approaching, Maureen might just be able to stay with Liam forever.
But the rest of them would have to go their separate ways.
One day after school, someone even improvised a poem for Maureen and Liam on the spot: "Ah! Youth!"
"Maureen was startled, she turned her head to look at the young follower.
