The raise of Maureen Smith and her Good Luck System -
Chapter 136: Who is Little Checker?
Chapter 136: Who is Little Checker?
They barely managed to stay up till half-past eleven.
Liam noticed Maureen yawn quietly behind his back.
Maureen was also mindful about Liam’s insomnia issue.
"Maybe we should go to bed early, you still have school tomorrow morning," Liam spoke out again.
Though Maureen tried hard to resist sleepiness, the drowsiness kept washing over her.
She felt a bit down, not wanting to part.
She looked up at Liam, after a moment of consideration, she conceded, "
Alright, let’s sleep early."
Turning off the tablet, the two reluctantly retreated to their respective rooms.
Something occurred to Maureen, she said to Liam,
"I bought you some stuff before I came up, it’s by your bed."
"What?" Liam lifted the corners of his lips, unable to suppress the smug expression that spread across his face.
"Still shopping? Is it the fifth anniversary?"
He wheeled his wheelchair to the side of the bed.
Upon seeing what was on the head of the bed, he was taken aback.
The voice of Maureen from behind rang out, "I saw your meds." Liam’s body stiffened slightly.
But Maureen did not continue to question, softly saying instead, "I’ve bought you two picture books, mostly images and fewer words, so they won’t be too taxing.
If you can’t sleep, you can skim through them, letting your thoughts flow.
That might help somewhat..."
Scratching her head, Maureen couldn’t think of a better solution.
Those medicines were something Liam had already tried, but their effectiveness seemed mediocre.
"If they don’t help, just wake me up, let’s try pulling an all-nighter together."
"Staying up for long periods may eventually send us to slumber, and who knows - we might even have some pleasant dreams together."
Liam’s Adam’s apple moved, his fingers tightening around the picture book, he turned to look at her.
Maureen stood at the entrance, her voice gentle, "In summary, I don’t want you to be alone."
She stood there, backlit, wearing a fluffy pajama and still slender.
Her voice was gentle, each word making its way into Liam’s heart, setting off ripples, shallow yet unceasing.
Liam held his breath, watching her. The rain was coming down outside the window, pitter-patter.
Liam’s long-buried affection had spread to every corner of his body, growing into an indelible mark.
The name Maureen had carved a deep trace in his heart.
A warm glow was coming his way.
Liam didn’t feel so cold anymore. In that moment, he felt very fortunate.
"Come here."
Liam said. Maureen walked over.
Suppressing the surging emotions in his heart, he drew her in, held her tight, and whispered, "Goodnight."
He was no longer alone.
==========
Liam’s fracture was gradually healing, and only Niel and Drake knew about their relationship in the entire class.
While playing basketball, Niel accidentally let the secret slip to a classmate, and the news took them by surprise.
Niel glanced toward the sports field, realizing that Maureen was absent.
He assumed that Liam couldn’t participate in the sports class due to his leg injury, and Maureen decided to stay in the classroom for self-study.
He certainly wasn’t interested in going there to watch them act all lovey-dovey.
With a lament, he made a three-step layup, reminding,
"Don’t let the word out, I can’t be the only one blinded by this.
Can you guys believe these two actually ended up together—"
Before he could finish his sentence, the junior’s jaws dropped in shock,
"What? They just got together?
Wasn’t Maureen dating the boss since the day she transferred?"
Niel: "Dake noticed something was off one week later.
As the Classroom teacher, he observed and found something puzzling—why were Maureen and Liam always arriving at the class at the same time lately?
Once or twice could be chalked up to coincidence.
But why had it been like this for a whole week?!
Moreover, Liam’s attendance had dramatically improved, and he was no longer late.
In fact, he would even arrive at the classroom at seven in the morning with Maureen.
Wasn’t this absolutely shocking?!
The more teacher Logan thought about it, the stranger it seemed.
He suspected that Liam, was bullying Maureen.
Broken leg aside, why was it always Maureen who pushed him from the school gate every day?
Wasn’t Maureen a boarding student, specified to be the school gate errand runner to pick up people?
And yet every day after school, he still pushed him and his wheelchair onto his family’s car?
There was no such bullying method in school bullying, right?!
Teacher logan was rather worried.
During the self-study session, he rested his hands on the lecter, seemingly not watching the students below, but kept glancing over at the corner where Liam and Maureen were located.
In the second to last row of the classroom, Maureen, having finished the problems she assigned herself, was taking a breather and passing notes with Liam.
Liam:So that’s what it means? It dawned upon Liam what Maureen’s small rubber band that she gave him during the training meant.
She had offhandedly said that it was blessed and wearing it could protect him, and he had actually believed it!
Just how foolish had he been?!
But again, it was mostly because Liam at the time lacked confidence.
Despite finding a possible translation online as an expression of affection, he didn’t dare to think that way.
Has she been trying to confess to him since then?
Liam felt his ears growing slightly red, his heart thumped wildly in his chest, filling him with euphoria.
Liam swiftly passed over a few notes.
You’ve liked me all along.
I understand.
Seeing the cocky emotion, Maureen felt the urge to hit him.
Liam lowered his head to write again.
Maureen leaned her head closer, just by his gestures, she knew he was writing ’Richard.’
Every day, Liam regarded Richard as his prime enemy, wishing to surpass him in every little detail.
Seeing that, Maureen felt her head about to burst.
She preemptively passed him a note: "Now that we’ve cleared this up, what about your little flying checker"
Little flying checker? What little flying checker? Liam lifted his head to look at Maureen, utterly puzzled.
Maureen gritted her teeth, thinking to herself, he’s still playing dumb, men are really hopeless.
Maureen said: "On the night of your birthday, Drake told us that you have a childhood friend.
You named her ’Little Flying Checker.’
How is it? Enjoying ’Flying Checker’?"
Liam froze in shock.
He was terrified. What the hell?
A childhood friend?
He hadn’t given a second glance to any other girls in his entire life.
Maureen replied: "Heh." ... That same night, Drake was tricked into going to Liam’s apartment.
Liam locked the door, forcing Drake and Little checker to play Flying Chess all night.
According to Drake, they played until they felt sick.
