The raise of Maureen Smith and her Good Luck System -
Chapter 127: Snow light date
Chapter 127: Snow light date
After dinner, the two emerged from Professor Logan’s house.
Outside, the sky had turned somewhat gloomy, with the clouds wrapped in a layer of gray.
The air was cold, causing the breath they exhaled to turn into white mist. Liam walked out in front pocketing his hands.
Seeing the unkempt and dismal weeds in the courtyard, he casually said to Professor Logan, "Aren’t you going to get rid of these weeds? Would you like me to hire someone to clean it up?"
Before he could finish his words, he was glared at by Professor Logan, "Why do you talk so much nonsense? Once you finish eating, you should go.
If you are not leaving, are you thinking of spending the night here?"
With that said, Professor Logan shooed them out.
Maureen hastily pulled Liam out of the courtyard. Outside the courtyard, Maureen said helplessly to Liam, "Professor Logan really abhors people helping him.
Otherwise, he would have asked some of his past students to keep his grandson company every week.
He wouldn’t have had to haphazardly put out a post online.
If we want to help him, we can’t say it so blatantly.
His pride can’t tolerate it."
"Isn’t this old man stubborn as a mule?" Liam glanced back, clicked his tongue, and said, "I think he’s actually quite happy when we come to visit him.
He even drank a few cups of wine but still put on an unwilling face.
This old man, really." Maureen mentally complained, yet you have the nerve to seriously criticize others when you’re just the same.
Liam halted in surprise, "When did I become like him?"
Oh crap.
Only then did Maureen realize that she had voiced her inner thoughts.
Liam gave her a warning look, "Why do I feel that you’ve been bad-mouthing me behind my back all day?"
"Bad-mouth? I call it speaking truth to power," Maureen simply burst out, "When you were sick the other day, I went to give you medicine.
You clearly were looking forward to my visit.
But once I arrived, you drove me away, putting on an indifferent face, asking ’why are you here’ and ’what does it matter to you if I am sick or not, do you care’?"
On that day, Maureen genuinely thought that Liam didn’t want to see her.
However, looking back now, she felt that even the air seemed sour.
Was Liam eating some old vinegar that day?
"What do you mean by saying that you aren’t saying one thing and meaning another?"
Imagining Liam mimicked by her so vividly, his entire face flushed as red as a tomato. Was this some kind of joke?!
Was the tone of his speech like this on that day?!
Why did he seem so mournful, like a widow from a cold palace?! Angrily, Liam retorted,
"That’s your misconception!
On that day, I merely lost my patience! I didn’t want to see anyone! I was trying to drive you away! Little mask, your courage grows each day!"
Maureen retorted, "If you didn’t want to see me, why did you wash your hair?"
Liam burst out in irritation, "Coincidence! Don’t you understand? I just happened to take a shower."
"Oh——" Maureen replied with an expression of revelation. Liam: "..." Seeing Maureen still laughing, Liam was so embarrassed that he wished he could find a hole to hide in, and he walked away.
Maureen was laughing so hard behind him that her stomach hurt.
After walking a few steps, Liam turned around with a sulky face to see Maureen still standing in the same place, and he said: "....." "Is it really that funny?!"
Liam strides back with big steps, pulling up her down jacket hood and walks towards the direction of the alleyway,
"Stop laughing! It’s getting dark! Let’s go home."
As the pair continue walking out, deeper for one foot and shallower for the other, a snowflake unexpectedly falls from the sky, landing on the corner of Maureen’s mouth, kissing the cool softness.
Then, without warning, it begins to snow from the sky.
It’s the first snow of the year.
Beautiful white snowflakes falling from the sky.
The two of them stop involuntarily, looking upwards.
The deep dark alley, dim orange street lamps, the dancing snowflakes are like transparent spirits, landing lightly upon them.
Their shadows stretch long and short under the streetlight. In an instant.
The whole world seemed to quieten down and become ethereal.
"It’s snowing." Maureen holds out her hand.
She and Liam knew each other from autumn, and now it’s winter.
Liam picks a snowflake off her raven-black hair, and casually readjusts her scarf for her. Maureen looks up at Liam.
Liam hesitates for a moment, trying hard to resist the flush from his ears. Liam suddenly turns away and says nonchalantly,
"I’ll take you somewhere."
"What place?" Maureen asked. Even though she hadn’t been there and had no idea what the place was, her heart had already started pounding.
"Wear your gloves, and you’ll know once we get there," Liam pulled his hands back, tucking them into his pockets again.
He said coldly, "I’m not specifically taking you there, it’s just on the way.
It’s still quite early to return to school, I don’t want you to feel lonely and bored if you go back to school too early.
So, I’m casually showing you a little care." Maureen held back her laughter, "Mm."
Twenty minutes later, the car stopped on a piece of vacant land near a grove on mountain bay North Road, about 2.5 kilometers away from school.
"Maureen stared blankly at the ’place you’ll know once we get there’ which Liam had mentioned.
There was nothing around, the bare trees were whipped wildly by the wind, something was wrapped around them, possibly wires, but it was too dark to see clearly.
All she could feel were the snowflakes, which were becoming heavier and starting to land on her shoulders.
Maureen was freezing to death. Liam stood on her windward side to block the wind for her.
She turned her head to look at Liam beside her, "Is this the place you brought me to?"
Liam’s hand was frantically pressing the switch of the fairy lights within his pocket, but no light was shining.
He gaped at the hundreds of light bulbs on the tree, which were completely out of light, and he began to question everything.
There’s a saying that quality goods are not cheap, but he directly sorted the prices from high to low, picking the most expensive one which costs tens of thousands!
"Can this even be a problem?!"
"Is heaven playing tricks on him?!" "...Yes." Liam forced himself to remain calm, trying his best to behave nonchalantly, saying, "Walking around after a meal helps prevent gaining weight.
But since you’re cold, I should hurry and take you back." "..." Maureen was thus blown about in the wind, following Liam on a trip to the small woods.
After that, she was escorted back to the dormitory by Liam.
She had never imagined that when he had said he just intended to ’take a slight detour’, he really meant just ’taking a slight detour’!
After sending Maureen back, Liam had the driver drive him back to that place - the one he had painstakingly set up over an entire night.
Fire surged within Liam’s chest.
He had the urge to rush over and give that unscrupulous merchant a good beating. Pulling out a switch from his coat pocket, he pressed it with a grim face, planning to fix it and bring Maureen to see the next day if it still didn’t work.
And then, With a soft "click", just a light touch on the switch and hundreds of tiny light bulbs lit up, adorning the treetops.
The playful snowflakes fluttered in the air, reflecting the spectacular sight - so beautiful it seemed otherworldly.
Liam: "..." What the hell? It’s working now??? A couple happened to pass by this path and stepped out of their car.
They cuddled close and stood still, enjoying the sight.
The man, seeing Liam with the switch, flashes Liam a grin, "Son, thank you." Liam was so angry that his thoughts were all muddled. ...
After returning to her dorm, Maureen had no idea where Liam had gone.
Anyways, about half an hour later, the dorm matron upstairs came knocking on the door, handing her a steaming cup of ginger milk tea and a box.
She said that the boy who had dropped her off had just left.
Maureen opened to see. Inside the box was a rechargeable hot water bag.
"Where is he?"
The matron replied, "He’s already left."
Maureen closed the door, sat by the table, warming her hands against the hot milk tea.
She poked a straw in, took a sip, the sweetness filled her mouth while warmth spread throughout her stomach.
Maureen walked over to the balcony, looking out the window, the heavy snow was falling and the chilly air was solidifying into a white mist on the glass window pane.
Yet inside was utterly warm.
She extended her finger, wiping off the window, a scene of falling snowflakes on a snowy night unfolded.
Unexpectedly, Maureen reached out to touch the top of her own hair.
However, it was a completely different feeling.
When Liam messes up her hair, his force carries a bit of the rough, dear affection typical of boys.
When Liam plucks the snowflakes from her hair, his fingertips are warm, the fleeting touch making her scalp tingle.
Maureen lowered her gaze, focusing on the milk tea in her hand.
The warmth of the milk tea, spreading from her palm to her fingertips and heart, made her feel Liam’s warmth on the winter day.
Impulses and desires gradually sprouted within her.
Her heart felt strange and itchy, as if something was gently scratching at it. ...
Neither Liam nor Maureen slept well that night.
She felt as if she was turning into the potted plant, the tender shoots silently growing out, causing a strange sensation in her heart.
When she closes her eyes, all she sees is Liam.
All Maureen could do was take deep breaths, controlling her thoughts forcefully, trying to focus on the difficult problems she met during the day. ...
Don’t know how much time has passed. In a drowsy state. Gradually, her mind was able to detach from Liam and begin to tackle those problems.
The result of such was that Maureen dreamt of Olympiad math problems the entire night, frantically searching for draft paper in her dreams.
