Chapter 489: 488 is not here to cause her trouble (second update)

For several days in a row, heavy snow had fallen, and because travel was difficult due to the snow, Tuoba Che discussed with Li Rui, and by twilight, a group of people rested at an inn along the way.

They had been traveling for several days and were still within the borders of Houtang.

Because Li Rui had a Houtang jade pass, it was not difficult to enter the inn to rest.

However, Li Rui was coughing severely for some reason.

Initially, Qiu Qianyun thought he had contracted typhoid fever.

She then searched for the medicines Li Xianyun had left behind when she left Chang’an, which included treatments for typhoid, lung and stomach ailments, as well as for external injuries, all in preparation for emergencies.

Qiu Qianyun found medicine for treating typhoid and gave it to Li Rui to drink, but it did not work at all.

Li Rui’s cough grew more and more severe, as if he was going to cough out his heart and lungs. In just a short two days, he had lost weight and his complexion turned a terrifying yellow.

The inn’s physician had gone out on business and was not at the inn for several days, leaving them without a source of medical help.

Qiu Qianyun had no choice but to continue having the servant girls prepare medicine for treating typhoid.

Feeling unwell, Li Rui went to bed early, lying down in the quilt to rest.

Qiu Qianyun sat on the soft couch by the window, doing needlework; she had already made several garments for Li Xianyun, but still felt it was not enough.

Parents always want to do more for their children, fearing that they may not do enough.

Li Rui had just fallen into a fitful sleep when he was awakened by a heart-wrenching cough.

Qiu Qianyun hurried over, sat on the edge of the bed, and patted his back to help him catch his breath.

After a long bout of coughing, Li Rui finally stopped intermittently and felt a bit better, but his face had already turned red from the coughing, even his neck was red.

He glanced at the needlework basket on the table and said to Qiu Qianyun, "Rest earlier, don’t strain your eyes."

During this journey, whenever Qiu Qianyun had free time, she would take out her needlework basket and make clothes, and she would also work on them late into the night when they stayed at inns.

This was too much for her body to handle.

Qiu Qianyun said, "I still need to make a few more garments. Once we arrive in Shangjing, time will be too precious to be wasted on making clothes. I want to spend more time with Xianxian."

"If Xianxian knew you were making clothes for her day and night like this, she would worry about you again," he said.

"If Xianxian knew, it would be because you told her, and then I wouldn’t pay attention to you anymore, no matter what," she replied.

The two were married by their parents’ arrangement and matchmaker’s words, but their relationship was harmoniously rare.

Qiu Qianyun had just finished speaking when she coughed hard twice.

Li Rui expressed his concern, "You haven’t caught my illness, have you?"

"No, it’s just a bit of itchiness in the throat," she replied.

Hearing this, Li Rui’s brows furrowed even more, as his own illness had started with an itchy throat and then progressively worsened.

"For the next couple of days, you should not stay with me anymore, lest you catch my illness," he suggested.

Qiu Qianyun was more philosophical, "It doesn’t matter. If one is destined to fall ill, they will, and there’s no escaping it."

"How can that be okay?" he objected.

Li Rui was about to persuade her further when a knock came from the door.

"Master, Madam, the medicine is ready," a voice called.

"Bring it in," Qiu Qianyun said.

The servant girl brought in the medicine and left as instructed by Qiu Qianyun.

After Li Rui drank the medicine, Qiu Qianyun suggested, "Prince, perhaps we should tell Xianxian about this. Her medical skills are excellent, and she will surely be able to cure your cough."

Li Rui coughed violently in his agitation and, after taking a moment to catch his breath, insisted, "Absolutely not. We came to see her, not to cause her trouble."

"But..." she started.

Li Rui placed his hand over Qiu Qianyun’s and said firmly, "Listen to me."

With a long sigh, Qiu Qianyun finally nodded, signaling her agreement.
