Chapter 581: Chapter 479: Want to drive her out of the palace? Encountered oddballs in blind date, sneaked out and was tricked by a rogue

The Empress had the good fortune to taste the Custard Buns, a little sweet, with a milky aroma, much tastier than the ordinary Steamed Buns.

"Do you like it?"

Susu nodded vigorously, "Baby loves these milky bundles the most."

Taotao replied, not to be outdone, "Nanny, I also like."

The Empress looked at her beloved grandson and granddaughter with a smile. She was truly grateful to Shen Chuwei for giving her a pair of twin imperial grandchildren, adding much joy to her previously mundane days.

"Qing Ying, bring out the pastries, let the darlings have a taste."

"Yes." Qing Ying replied and went to prepare the pastries.

Not only did the Empress adore the twins, but Qing Ying also loved them very much. Every time she saw their adorable ways, a genuine smile would emanate from her.

When Lady Chang arrived, what she saw was this heartwarming scene, and witnessing the aunt’s smiling face toward them, she remembered that once, the aunt used to smile at her just the same.

However, over these past two years, the aunt had become colder to her. She used to clasp her hand with care, but now she couldn’t care less about her well-being.

Lady Chang clutched her handkerchief and walked in with measured steps, breaking the warmth of the room, "Auntie."

The Empress looked up to see Lady Chang, her smile immediately fading, "You’ve come."

Lady Chang took a few steps forward, speaking softly, "Auntie, I heard that Prince Yu and the Crown Princess have gone to Mobei. Lanlan, concerned for your worries, has come to accompany you."

"Lanlan is thoughtful. However, the sight of them improves my mood immediately," the Empress said, looking at the two little ones sitting in their chairs and enjoying the pastries that Qing Ying had brought.

Lady Chang’s expression soured upon hearing this, seeing how the aunt doted on them as if they were treasures in her palm.

All because of Shen Chuwei, Xiao Jinyan had grown distant.

Because of the twin heirs, even the aunt who had always been fond of her grew distant.

If they didn’t exist, the Crown Princess would be hers, and the aunt would only dote on her children.

The jealousy in Lady Chang’s eyes grew fiercer.

Without them, everything would have been hers.

The Empress looked up and saw Lady Chang still standing, so she said, "Don’t just stand there, sit down and eat some of the cakes with us."

"Yes, Auntie." Lady Chang sat down next to the Empress, holding her handkerchief tightly. Watching the two little brats across from her eat, she felt an innate dislike.

She smiled at the Empress, saying, "Auntie, Taotao and Susu are so cute. I hope I can give birth to such adorable children in the future."

Her words implied a reminder to the Empress that she too could have children, not just Shen Chuwei.

The Empress paused then lifted her head to look at Lady Chang, who was smiling at Taotao and Susu. Anyone who saw such cute and sensible children like Taotao and Susu would involuntarily take a liking to them.

If she were a bit younger, she would want to have a daughter as adorable as Susu.

Susu, gnawing on a pastry in her hand, noticed the Empress watching her without eating. She reached out her little hand, grabbed a piece of cake, and held it up to the Empress, "Nanny, you try cake too."

"Thank you, darling." The Empress happily took the pastry from her hand and bit into it, finding it even sweeter than the usual ones.

Susu asked earnestly with a face full of concern, "Nanny, is it good?"

The Empress replied with a smile, "Delicious."

Susu’s eyes curved into a smile, and she pointed at the plate of pastries, "I’ll give some to Grandfather too."

The Empress nodded in agreement, smiling. Susu truly cared about the Emperor.

No wonder Susu always thought of her Grandfather first; the Emperor’s indulgence towards Susu was extreme. Since birth, he had never once been stern with her, always talking to Susu with a beaming smile.

Having finished her cake, Taotao diligently wiped her fingers with a handkerchief and couldn’t help asking, "Nanny, when is Mother coming back?"

The Empress’s chewing stalled but then she replied with a smile, "She’ll be back as soon as she finds your father."

After finishing her cake, Susu reached into the plate and took another piece to continue eating, "Will Father be back very, very soon?"

The Empress nodded vigorously, "Yes, he’ll be back soon."

Taotao and Susu both smiled happily upon hearing this, as they hadn’t seen their father for quite some time.

Lady Chang, feeling neglected, watched the Empress and the two little ones laughing and talking as though she did not exist. She had specifically reminded the Empress of her desire to have children, but the Empress had disregarded it completely.

She didn’t take Lady Chang seriously at all.

After eating the pastries, Taotao went back to study, and Susu, with little Bai, went to find the Emperor.

Lady Chang saw the two nuisances leave, feeling as if all the focus had shifted onto her.
