Chapter 447: Chapter 400: Is Feng Wuyou Your Childhood Sweetheart?
Lady Chang looked at Shen Chuwei, the Shen family had been demoted, and being born of a concubine, she really had nothing to boast about.
Shen Chuwei lowered her gaze and nodded, "Answering Your Majesty the Empress Dowager, I am of the Shen family."
The Empress Dowager was completely confused, "What? Of the Shen family? Which Shen family?"
Lady Chang stepped forward, taking a more prominent position, and looking up at the Empress Dowager, noticing her confusion, she kindly reminded, "Crown Princess, there are a few with the surname Shen. If the Crown Princess doesn’t clarify, the Empress Dowager won’t know who you mean."
Upon hearing this, the Empress Dowager looked up and saw Chang Huilan, asking with some excitement, "Isn’t this our Lanlan? Two years have passed, and you’ve grown even more lovely."
Lady Chang saw that the Empress Dowager had noticed her, and, pleased, she bowed again, "Thank you for the praise, Your Majesty the Empress Dowager."
Then the Empress Dowager turned to the Crown Princess, "Lan’er is right, state it clearly for me, which Shen family, and what is their official rank?"
Xiao Jinyan spoke on behalf of Shen Chuwei, "Your Majesty the Empress Dowager, the Crown Princess is the daughter of the former Minister Shen."
The Empress Dowager looked at the Crown Prince, then at the Emperor. "What does ’former Minister Shen’ mean? Has the position of Minister been changed?"
The Emperor humbly explained, "Mother, Minister Shen was getting on in years, so he has been replaced."
The Empress Dowager nodded her head, her gaze returning to the Crown Princess, her brow furrowing slightly. She then looked at the little royal grandson in the Emperor’s arms, the adorable child eyeing her with beautiful eyes, clearly a child who would win hearts.
"The royal grandson is already four months old? Has a name been chosen?"
Looking down at the little girl in his arms, the Emperor smiled, "Mother, her name is Susu."
Then, pointing at the baby in the Empress’s arms, he continued, "And this is Taotao."
"Susu?" the Empress Dowager frowned deeply, "He is the royal grandson, why choose such a feminine name?"
The Emperor looked down at Susu, who, despite being so small, seemed to sense the adults’ moods. At that moment, Susu was staring curiously at the Empress Dowager with big eyes.
"Mother, she is the royal granddaughter. It is the baby in the Empress’s arms who is the royal grandson," the Emperor corrected.
"I had thought you were holding the royal grandson," the Empress Dowager admitted and then looked at the Empress, "Let me have a look at the royal grandson."
"Yes, Mother," the Empress replied, moving forward with Taotao in her arms so that the Empress Dowager could see him clearly.
The Empress Dowager inspected the royal grandson in the Empress’s arms, "They look so alike, how come he was given such a common name as Taotao?"
Smiling, the Empress explained, "Mother, the names are derived from Taosu. They are the milk names for the royal grandson and granddaughter."
Upon hearing the name Taosu, which was clearly a name of pastries, the Empress Dowager was astonished that such names were used for the royal grandson and granddaughter.
"Who chose the milk names?" she asked.
Upon hearing the question, the Empress paused for a moment, glanced at Shen Chuwei, and said softly, "It was chosen by the Crown Princess, and everyone quite likes it."
The Empress Dowager glanced at the Crown Princess with a flicker of disdain in her eyes. Taosu, what kind of name was that for the offspring of a noble family?
She turned her attention back to the royal grandson, who was clutching at the Empress’s hand, his beautiful, expressive phoenix eyes as if able to communicate.
"The royal grandson is being well taken care of. His little face is rosy, resembling the Crown Prince quite a bit."
Looking at Taotao, whose phoenix eyes were so much like the Crown Prince’s, the Empress agreed, "You’re right, Mother. Taotao resembles the Crown Prince a lot when he was a child."
The Empress Dowager had held her great-grandson before, so she didn’t feel the same excitement as the first time.
Later, the Empress Dowager, who preferred boys over girls, never would have imagined she would come to love her great-granddaughter the most.
When everyone had withdrawn, the Empress Dowager kept the Emperor back alone.
While sipping the tea in her hand, the Empress Dowager looked up at the Emperor sitting across from her and spoke earnestly, "Emperor, hadn’t we agreed that Lanlan was to become the Crown Princess? Even if it wasn’t Lanlan, a noble lady of matching status should have been chosen as the Crown Princess. Just like when you married the legitimate daughter of General Chang, irrespective of affection, it was greatly beneficial."
The Emperor had guessed what the Empress Dowager wanted to say and was unsurprised when he heard it.
"Mother, I understand what you mean, but I conferred the title of Princess Jiahe upon Shen Chuwei before making her the Crown Princess. In that sense, it did match the status," he explained.
The Empress Dowager snorted, "How does that match? Do you see a daughter of a noble house naming the royal grandson after pastries?"
"Mother, it’s just a milk name. I find Susu quite an endearing name myself. You don’t know, Mother, just how lovable Susu is," the Emperor said with a smile, recalling the sight of Susu playing with the Jade Seal on the desk.
