Chapter 664: Chapter 467: The Eerie Building
Li Yi didn’t get lured by the thing on the forked path. He and Xuan Yuezi resolutely walked through the passage, though what they were experiencing was somewhat bizarre. He wasn’t sure if he was still in Tianzhong City or had already arrived in an unknown world. This dark space was filled with too many incomprehensible things.
At the end of the forked path, light appeared in front, and his vision suddenly opened up.
This was an endless city.
The city’s layout was orderly and uniform, with square-shaped buildings neatly lined up. Each building’s appearance and design were identical, like a perfect replication. These buildings were not abandoned; there were signs of use, with many windows and corridors lit inside.
The pale lights were one of the few light sources in this dim city.
Looking up at the sky.
This sky had neither sun nor stars, only abyss-like darkness.
"This is definitely not Tianzhong City." Li Yi realized at this moment.
The so-called dark invasion is most likely an eerie and unfamiliar world invading a corner of this world. The building-like monster previously encountered, and the hair falling from the sky, should be related to this place.
But what kind of world is this?
There’s absolutely nothing.
Only darkness and ominousness.
If this world has inhabitants, can they truly survive here?
Not only is there no sunlight here, but also no land to farm, unable to sustain oneself. Was this a once-thriving city also invaded by darkness, resulting in its current state?
Li Yi gazed into the distance, surveying all around, trying to find something different.
But the streets between buildings were deserted, there was nothing, not even any vehicles, surprisingly clean. This scene somewhat resembled the outside of Tianzhong City. Based on this assumption, staying outside this place for long might lead to unknown danger.
He took out his phone to check.
There was still no signal, but Yang Wei’s call had already hung up and hadn’t continued.
Li Yi was somewhat skeptical whether Yang Wei called him over or he was deceived by some voice into entering this eerie city.
Nonetheless, the passage behind him remained, not disappearing. He could retrace his steps anytime, not concerned about being trapped here—this was good news.
However, the passage he walked through was below one of the square-shaped buildings, and the passage entrance wasn’t singular; neatly aligned, there were dozens, perhaps hundreds. Each passage entrance looked identical, and if not remembered carefully, one could quickly get lost, unable to find the way back.
To be cautious, Li Yi flicked his fingers, sending out a wave of Gang Qi, intending to leave his mark at the passage entrance.
The Gang Qi struck the wall, tearing an opening, but eerily, at the depth of the tear, streaks of fresh blood started flowing out; the inside of the wall actually had crimson flesh crawling.
"Is this building also a monster?" Seeing this, Li Yi’s face changed slightly.
Moreover, as the blood flowed out, it quickly filled the opening. Following this, the blood solidified, gradually transforming into a gray-black wall, automatically repairing the tear previously made by Gang Qi.
Li Yi then glanced at the other buildings not far away, intending to test if they were the same. But just as he prepared to unleash Gang Qi, suddenly, from a relatively spacious passage entrance behind a building, a man’s voice emerged.
"Which building did you come from? Don’t stay outside, come in quickly, or you’ll die."
Li Yi and Xuan Yuezi immediately turned around.
At that larger passage entrance connecting to the building’s interior stood a man in a suit. His speech, attire, and looks were all like an Earthling. Right now, this man was urgently gesturing for Li Yi and Xuan Yuezi to come over.
"Are there really living people?" Li Yi was a bit surprised.
In such a monster-like building, there were actually living people, and it seemed like a regular person.
This was indeed getting stranger.
Li Yi walked over and asked, "Who are you? What do you do here?"
"My name is Liu Ming, and I’m responsible for guarding this building. Actually, I only started working here three days ago; the previous guard died. I got chosen to replace him. You’re quite brave, standing outside the building unfeared. You should know outside the building there are many terrifying things, even veterans dare not recklessly wander outside." Liu Ming, the suited man, spoke, always staying within the corridor, daring not easily step outside.
Li Yi examined him and asked, "Are there other people living inside this building?"
"Of course, many people live in each building, but the building behind me houses fewer people, at least dozens, because this building is relatively impoverished, unable to sustain more people. Many have risked moving to other buildings." Liu Ming replied.
"Have you always lived here?" Li Yi asked again.
Liu Ming answered, "No, I lived in other buildings when I was younger, then moved here with my parents once I grew up. I’ve lived here for about ten years now. From which building did you migrate here?"
Li Yi was silent for a moment upon hearing this.
Lived in the building since childhood?
The same goes for Liu Ming’s parents?
If so, they are local inhabitants of this world.
But, how is that possible?
This dark and eerie place, a building formed by monsters, how could a normal person live here for over twenty years? How do they survive, do they, like Ghost Tamers of World 36, not need to eat or drink? Or are they monsters in human skin?
No matter how Li Yi observed, Liu Ming seemed quite normal.
No trace of monsters, nothing unusual.
The only odd thing is Liu Ming’s suit style doesn’t suit him well, it fits loosely and isn’t very tailored.
"Want to take a look inside the building?" Li Yi was a bit apprehensive but curious to find out what exactly is going on here.
He glanced at Xuan Yuezi beside him.
Xuan Yuezi simply smiled, appearing very composed; even in such a situation, she had confidence in ensuring Li Yi’s safety.
"If you don’t want to enter the building, leave immediately, don’t linger at the entrance, lest you invite danger. This building is not very secure, can’t provide good protection, and the previous guard was killed by monsters." At this moment, Liu Ming urged them, also fearful, reluctant to linger at the entrance, wanting to retreat inside the building.
Li Yi just wanted to speak when suddenly, he caught a glimpse of the dim sky with his silver eyes.
Something was quickly flying toward them.
What is that... Beneath a tattered black cloak, a pair of skeletal arms reached out, holding an old wooden-handled scythe, resembling the Grim Reaper in myth, attacking with an eerie, bizarre laughter that gave one chills.
There was more than one such monster.
Li Yi spotted more of such monsters lurking behind another building, seemingly noticing Li Yi and Xuan Yuezi, swinging their old scythes, laughing as they charged over.
Xuan Yuezi immediately stepped forward, planning to use Daoist Skill to eliminate these monsters.
"Immortal, save your strength, we lack understanding of the situation here; better not act rashly." Li Yi advised her, as this situation reminded him of delivering mail at the Ghost Post Office back then; for caution, he didn’t want to act impulsively.
"Let’s check out the building; I’m curious why a building like a monster can house so many ordinary people."
Without hesitation, he swiftly proceeded towards the building behind them.
Before leaving, Li Yi flicked a drop of blood onto the passageway he had just returned from above.
Using his own blood as a mark, it shouldn’t disappear, right?
Xuan Yuezi said nothing, she also surveyed their surroundings; since Li Yi hoped she wouldn’t act, she was willing to restrain herself.
"Hurry, hurry." Liu Ming urged as he saw Li Yi and Xuan Yuezi approaching.
Then he ran ahead without looking back.
This passage was large and spacious but equally deep.
As they walked inside, footsteps echoed, surroundings dim and oppressive, no lights around, only a small table at the passage’s end, with an old kerosene lamp on it.
The flame of the kerosene lamp was set to the minimum, clearly not meant for lighting, but rather as a warning.
Once the kerosene lamp extinguishes, it signifies a dangerous intrusion into the building; all residents must be cautious, also signaling to people in other buildings that catastrophe has struck, deeming it unsuitable for migration.
As Li Yi and Xuan Yuezi walked through the corridor into the building, they were stunned by the scene before them.
In the center of this square-shaped building sat a towering corpse several hundred meters high, seemingly a female corpse; though much flesh and blood had vanished, revealing white bones, some parts still showed distinctive female features, and astonishingly, lush trees grew on it.
These trees were full of branches and leaves, with many red fruits hanging, some ripe, some still green.
"She has been dead for at least several hundred years." Xuan Yuezi’s fair eyes slightly moved: "While alive, her power was terrifying; dead, her body remains unrotting, nurturing the building’s inhabitants... Unbelievable, what kind of power could kill such a person here?"
Li Yi’s expression changed; he could feel that even now, this corpse emitted a peculiar energy field, enveloping the building, providing shelter, protecting its people from external darkness.
Thus, is this why the creatures dared not invade the building?
"Is it this building only, or does each outside building possess such a corpse?" The thought popped in Li Yi’s mind.
If so, that would be terrifying.
