Chapter 41: Chapter 32 Life Span_2
They walked on for a while longer.
At this moment, Zhao Qian suddenly became agitated and grabbed Li Yi’s arm, then pointed at a stall nearby, and whispered, "That’s the Coffin Ganoderma."
Li Yi looked over.
He saw that the vendor was an old man with gray hair and a withered figure sitting cross-legged in front of the stall, his body emanating an aura of death so strong one might mistake him for a long-dead corpse.
But on this old man’s stall were several strange items, among them was a black mushroom-shaped object, which was the Coffin Ganoderma Zhao Qian had mentioned.
Li Yi immediately walked over, looked to the left and right, then crouched down and pointed at the item on the stall, saying, "Boss, how much for this Coffin Ganoderma?"
"Sixty," came the hoarse reply.
"That expensive?" Zhao Qian’s face turned pale, her expression somewhat dazed.
"Zhao Qian, is it that you don’t have enough money? I’ll try to scrape some together," Li Yi asked in a hushed voice, then felt around his person.
He only had a smartphone on him, unsure if the ancient people of this Otherworld would accept it; besides that, he had half a Sword Coin, which should be worth something, as it was a Mysterious Object. If Zhao Qian couldn’t come up with the money, he’d have no choice but to grit his teeth and sell this damaged Mysterious Object.
Even though Mysterious Objects were precious, Zhao Ge had saved his life, and Li Yi could not stand by and let someone die out of greed.
"Brother Yi, Ghost Street’s transactions don’t accept gold or silver," Zhao Qian hesitated, seemingly finding it difficult to speak.
Li Yi pressed, "If not gold or silver, then what do they accept?"
With every word he spoke, he surveyed his surroundings; however, the market seemed relatively safe, with few ghosts nearby. Even if he spoke up, he did not attract any unwanted attention.
"They accept life span," said the withered old vendor suddenly.
"What? You can buy and sell life span?" Li Yi was immediately shocked.
The withered old man glanced at him lazily, not bothering to explain to this outsider.
Zhao Qian, with her head bowed, said in a bewildered tone, "My martial cultivation level isn’t high, my life span is no more than sixty, and now that I am already sixteen, I only have forty-four years of life span remaining. But this Coffin Ganoderma starts at sixty, and even if I spend all my life span, I still can’t afford it..."
"How do you know your life span is only sixty?" Li Yi asked, "Don’t ordinary people have at least eighty or ninety?"
"Brother Yi doesn’t know, the people of Xingzhou, ordinary folks have a life span of only about fifty. After practicing martial arts, my life span reached sixty, and my father’s high cultivation level gives him eighty years of life," Zhao Qian explained.
Li Yi finally came to the realization; so that was the case.
It truly was ancient.
The life spans were not long.
"If you can’t afford it, stay away and don’t loiter here," the withered old man said with a rasp.
"You’re asking too much for this Coffin Ganoderma, usually, it’s sold for only around fifteen," Zhao Qian bit her lip and said.
The withered old man snorted, "That’s for the ordinary Coffin Ganoderma. My Coffin Ganoderma comes from a thousand-year-old tomb, with extraordinary effects, naturally it’s expensive, and there’s no bargaining."
"Brother Yi, let’s look elsewhere," seeing this, Zhao Qian could only pull Li Yi away.
Sixty years of life span, the cost is too steep, like asking someone to throw their life away to afford it.
Li Yi didn’t move, but instead said, "Boss, if I buy it, how should I pay?"
"Sign in blood, and in seven days a Debt-collecting Ghost will come to collect the life span," the withered old man produced a piece of white talisman paper with incomprehensible writing on it, and he pointed to a blank spot on it.
"Just pressing a handprint will do? That’s convenient. Aren’t you afraid I’ll default?" Li Yi asked.
The withered old man snorted coldly, "If the Debt-collecting Ghost cannot collect, then ghost soldiers will come knocking, if ghost soldiers cannot collect, then Yin Generals will come, and if Yin Generals cannot collect, then a Yin God will hook the soul and seize the spirit. Think you can escape that?"
"Now that you’ve said so, I’m reassured. I’ll buy the Coffin Ganoderma," Li Yi immediately waved grandly, ready to make the purchase.
What a joke.
He was an Earthling, afraid of a ghost from the Otherworld coming to collect debts?
We’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
"Brother Yi, don’t be rash, sixty years of life span could cost you your life," Zhao Qian became anxious at once, holding onto Li Yi.
Li Yi said, "Don’t worry, I have a tough life, and besides, saving a life is important. If we miss this chance and have to look elsewhere, it’s still uncertain that we’ll find another Coffin Ganoderma. We’re running out of time; no need to persuade me. My master saved my life, so I’ll buy this Coffin Ganoderma as repayment of the favor."
"Alright, that settles it, boss, prepare the contract," he said.
After saying this, he brushed Zhao Qian off and, without hesitation, bit his finger, ready to sign and seal.
"You may sign, but first, let’s see how much life span you have left. I don’t want to make a losing deal," the withered old man blocked Li Yi’s hand from signing, then took out something that resembled a compass.
He grabbed Li Yi’s finger and pressed it onto the black compass.
"Don’t be nervous, this is a Life Plate, it measures your life span,"
The compass needle wavered, then quickly pointed to a number: One Hundred and Fifty.
"A life span of one hundred and fifty? That’s an incredibly long life span," the gaunt old man exclaimed in shock.
"Can I really live that long?" Li Yi stared at the compass, finding it somewhat inconceivable. Could this thing truly measure a person’s life span?
However, cultivators could indeed live over a hundred years without illness or disaster after their bodies had evolved.
To the ancient people of these Otherworlds, who had short lifespans, one hundred and fifty was already considered extremely long-lived.
"You’ve got quite the capital, sign here," the gaunt old man suddenly let out a strange laugh as he took out a piece of white talisman paper and handed it to Li Yi.
Li Yi pressed down without hesitation, leaving a bloody handprint: "Is this good enough?"
"Good, this item is yours now."
The gaunt old man was fair in his dealings, carefully putting away the white talisman paper and then passing the Coffin Ganoderma over, with none of the so-called deceitful tricks occurring.
After receiving it, Li Yi stuffed it into Zhao Qian’s hands, feeling a debt of gratitude had been settled in his heart.
"Brother Yi,"
Zhao Qian looked at the Coffin Ganoderma in her hands, not knowing what to say for a moment, only tears of gratitude swirled in her eyes.
That was sixty years of life span she was talking about, sold just like that.
Even if her father had saved him and taught him martial arts, this way of repaying him seemed too much.
Li Yi, on the other hand, appeared unconcerned and instead started chatting with the old man: "Boss, may I inquire about something?"
"Speak."
The gaunt old man’s attitude had improved a lot by now, since he had just made a big deal.
"I entered Ghost Street by accident; is there any way to leave this place?" Li Yi asked.
The gaunt old man said hoarsely, "You mean the way back is cut off? That’s not difficult, buy this item and you can go back."
After saying that, he pointed to an item on the stall.
It was a little horse made out of mud.
"What is this?" Li Yi picked it up, looked at it, and saw nothing special.
"This is a Mud Horse." The gaunt old man snatched the object from Li Yi’s hands, afraid the greenhorn might break it.
"A Mud Horse?" Li Yi looked at him curiously.
"Yes, this is the Mud Horse."
"How much for this Mud Horse?" Li Yi said.
"The Mud Horse, selling for ten years of life span," the gaunt old man said.
"A Mud Horse, that expensive?" Li Yi said.
The gaunt old man’s face darkened at once: "If you’re buying the Mud Horse, just buy it. If not, no more nonsense."
Li Yi said, "If the Mud Horse were a bit cheaper, of course I’d buy it, but your Mud Horse is too expensive."
"Are you here to buy something, or are you cursing people?" the gaunt old man could hardly hold back anymore.
"It wasn’t me who took advantage first, right? Out of all the names, it had to be called Mud Horse," Li Yi said.
"..." The gaunt old man’s cheeks twitched, wishing he could smack this clueless youth to death.
"This thing is sold at ten years of life span, no bargaining," he said after taking a few deep breaths to calm himself.
Li Yi said, "After I buy this thing, how do I use it?"
"Drop a few drops of blood onto it, and this ..." the gaunt old man hesitated, "this horse will turn into a Yin Horse. You just need to sit on it, and it will take you to the person closest to you. If you have no relatives in the mortal world, then forget what I just said," the gaunt old man said.
"You’re the one without relatives, come on, sign here," Li Yi extended his finger.
Seeing this, the gaunt old man finally looked a bit better and handed over a piece of white talisman paper.
With debts already piling high, Li Yi signed without hesitation, then thought for a moment and pointed at another item, saying, "I’ll take this Mud Horse as well."
"You have a lot of life span, you can buy as many as you like," the gaunt old man said.
"Better safe than sorry, who knows if I will suddenly enter Ghost Street again one day."
Li Yi signed once more and took away two Mud Horses.
