Chapter 249: Chapter 180: Hunting the Transcendent
Li Yi drove the off-road vehicle with Zheng Gong, entering the Ruined District once again.
The Ruined District now was nothing like it used to be, now fraught with Fierce Beasts and traces of Extraordinary Creatures. Thankfully, the Cultivators from Tianchang City would often traverse the Ruined District to access the dangerous zones. Although the district was perilous, the risk remained manageable since there were quite a few Cultivators around.
They roamed the Ruined District, seeking out Fierce Beasts, attempting to hunt them down.
"Zheng Gong, don’t just patrol around here in the car. Let’s delve deeper into the Ruined District. The periphery isn’t too dangerous, and if there’s any danger, it’s likely already been dealt with by other Cultivators," Li Yi said.
"Li Yi, it’s just the two of us on patrol, do we really need to go deep into the Ruined District?" Zheng Gong hesitantly responded.
Li Yi said, "Don’t worry, if we encounter some danger I can handle it. There won’t be any problems. Besides, I’d like to hunt a few Fierce Beasts to make some money to help with the household expenses. Such an opportunity is rare and shouldn’t be missed."
"Well, alright then." Seeing Li Yi so determined, Zheng Gong simply nodded without insisting any further and turned the steering wheel to head deeper into the Ruined District.
As they drove along, they saw many Cultivators parked by the roadside resting. They glanced at Li Yi’s vehicle but didn’t do anything. After all, the majority of people who came here weren’t criminals. They were just trying to hunt Fierce Beasts for money and wouldn’t attack strangers without good reason.
Robbery could only get you so much money, while Fierce Beasts were extremely valuable these days.
"The Ruined District has gotten a lot safer in the past few days. It wasn’t like this before," Zheng Gong noted as he drove deeper and realized it wasn’t as dangerous as imagined, revealing that the situation had changed recently.
Li Yi said, "A Fierce Beast goes for over ten million. If I were at the Spirit Medium Realm, I’d want to try my luck here too. Successfully hunting one would mean a lifetime of not worrying about food and drink. If you’re working as a guide, how long would it take to earn the money a single Fierce Beast is worth?"
"You’re right, when there’s enough profit, the danger doesn’t seem to matter," Zheng Gong said, "This is also what the bureau wants to see."
The two chatted and continued their patrol in the Ruined District.
The morning went by without incident, and no urgent tasks came from the bureau’s side.
Until noon.
Li Yi and Zheng Gong were driving when they saw a Fierce Beast burst out of a building, but it was hotly pursued by over twenty Cultivators with their Spiritual Sense activated. The Fierce Beast was strong, yet it couldn’t stand against the sheer number of Cultivators. Eventually cornered and trapped, it met its end.
"This is insane. Over twenty people taking down a Fierce Beast? Has it really become this competitive?" he shook his head in disbelief.
Zheng Gong said, "Because hunting Fierce Beasts here poses the least risk. However, those who really want to make money have to enter the dangerous zone. The edge areas of the dangerous zone have many Fierce Beasts, but correspondingly, the death rate is high. Risk and reward have always been proportional. Wait, hold on, Li Yi. I’ve just received a new message from headquarters."
"What’s the message?" Li Yi asked.
Zheng Gong pulled out the special investigator’s smartphone and after a glance said, "An observer reported that an Extraordinary Creature from the dangerous zone is heading our way towards the Ruined District. We should be careful."
"An Extraordinary Creature?" Li Yi’s expression shifted slightly.
"It’s in our vicinity, about three kilometers ahead, Li Yi. Let’s turn around and avoid crossing paths with that Extraordinary Creature. With our current strength, we’re not equipped to confront it, and it should be handled by a higher caliber of Spiritual Sense... It’s a shame Lin Yue is still recuperating at the training base, otherwise this would be an opportunity for us," Zheng Gong said, then regretfully signaled to retreat.
"Hold on," Li Yi said suddenly, grabbing onto his steering wheel.
"Li Yi, you’re not seriously considering that Extraordinary Creature, are you? I advise you to think this through," Zheng Gong appeared to grasp Li Yi’s train of thought.
"We brought a sniper rifle this time, there’s a chance to take down an Extraordinary Creature," Li Yi said with a gleam in his eye, "and don’t you find it odd that an Extraordinary Creature is conspicuously moving around the Ruined District in broad daylight? Normally, such creatures wouldn’t expose themselves so openly, as they are intelligent and know how to conceal their movements. Unless this one encountered some danger and was forced to flee this way."
"You think someone chased it here?" Zheng Gong speculated.
"I’m not sure, but we can take a look. If there’s a chance, we’ll make our move. If not, then be it. I don’t want to spend a whole day without any gains. Hunting down an Extraordinary Creature could earn at least a billion," Li Yi said with a stirring desire, urging Zheng Gong to keep driving.
Encouraged by Li Yi’s words, Zheng Gong steeled his resolve and floored the gas pedal, "I know this area of the Ruined District well. There’s an abandoned building up ahead, a perfect sniping spot. If the Extraordinary Creature passes this way, it will definitely be spotted. Let’s give it a try."
"That’s more like it."
Li Yi smiled, "We can’t pass up an opportunity right in front of us, can we? But we won’t be reckless; if it’s truly dangerous, we’ll retreat immediately. With my current strength, I should have a fighting chance against an Extraordinary Creature."
He was no longer the rookie just starting out.
