Chapter 103: Chapter 88: Struck it Rich
"Li Yi, come in, stop looking. We were just discussing how to reward you at the meeting. It’s about time you see if you are satisfied with what the Investigation Bureau has for you," Zhang Lei said with a smile, waving his hand to gesture Li Yi to come over.
Upon hearing about the reward, Li Yi’s eyes lit up, and he immediately walked into the conference room, first greeting everyone with a "Hello, everyone."
Then he approached Zhang Lei and asked, "Team Leader, what is the Investigation Bureau planning to reward me with this time?"
Zhang Lei smiled and said, "According to the statistics, you killed fifteen Fierce Beasts during this mission. Therefore, for this, the Investigation Bureau has decided to reward you with forty million in cash. Of course, this sum hardly compares to the value of those beasts, but Li Yi, you must understand, since you operated as an external operative, you can only claim thirty percent of the value of the beasts. The rest must be handed in partly, and partly distributed to other teammates."
"I understand that. To receive such a large sum of money is already beyond my expectation. Thanks for your consideration, Team Leader," Li Yi naturally understood, especially since he had killed most of those Fierce Beasts with a sniper rifle, and the operation was indeed under the auspices of the Investigation Bureau.
Moreover, much had been managed by the Investigation Bureau in the aftermath. Li Yi appreciated getting thirty percent; he had no complaints.
Zhang Lei nodded, "This is only the first reward. The second reward concerns that incomplete Mysterious Object. Before you came here, Wang Jian must have already told you that since this incomplete Mysterious Object was recovered by our Tianchang City Investigation Bureau, after discussions at headquarters, this Mysterious Object will be kept at the training base. Moreover, centered around this incomplete Mysterious Object, a meditation room will be built."
"Qualified staff have already made strict and reasonable calculations. Up to twenty-two meditation Cultivation Rooms can be constructed. As the main contributor to the recovery of this Mysterious Object, the Investigation Bureau has decided to give you two permanent cultivation slots. As long as this Mysterious Object is in Tianchang City, you have the right to cultivate using the incomplete Mysterious Object."
"Really? That’s wonderful!" Li Yi felt an immediate surge of joy.
He hadn’t expected to have a share after the recovery of the Bone Mural.
Moreover, having two slots was exceptionally precious. Even if he couldn’t use them himself, he could let others use them or even rent them out. He believed there were certainly a considerable number of Cultivators interested in the Mysterious Object within Tianchang City.
Compared to the forty million, these two Mysterious Object meditation room slots were truly the most valuable.
"Li Yi, don’t get too caught up in your excitement. You still have a third reward," said Investigator Zhang Zhixiong, pointing to the screen in the conference room with a smile, "See those three buildings there? Pick one as your reward."
"Receiving a building as my reward? Is this for real?" At that moment, Li Yi felt as if he was dreaming, disbelievingly looking at everyone around him.
A senior official, however, said with a smile, "This time you saved twenty of our investigators, including our Team Leader. The merit of this act in our eyes is even greater than recovering a Mysterious Object. We really couldn’t think of anything else to reward you with. We heard you still live in an apartment in the old city area, so after discussing it, we decided to reward you with a building to provide you with a safer residence. How about it? Are you dissatisfied with this reward?"
"No, no, that’s not it at all. I am very satisfied with this reward, even somewhat overwhelmed," Li Yi quickly gestured, feeling agitated inside.
He hadn’t expected the rewards from the Investigation Bureau to be so generous; previously, he had thought it would be just a sum of money.
"Since you like it, then choose a building," Zhang Lei said with a smile. "It’s just a pity that our Investigation Bureau doesn’t have many resources in AnDing District; otherwise, I would prefer to give you a building there."
"Team Leader, you are too kind. I already feel quite content. So, may I pick one of the buildings without reserve?" Li Yi’s eyes sparkled as he quickly reviewed the basic information on the three buildings.
The three buildings each had their pros and cons.
The Peace Finance Building had the highest foundational value, but its location was average, and after being idle for many years, it would need a considerable investment for renovations and refurbishments. Also, post-Sky Tipping incident, highrise buildings have high risks of attacks by Extraordinary Creatures.
The Flowing Years Club was in a medium location but had complete infrastructure and luxurious interior decorating suited for living; however, its downside was that it had no other value besides habitation.
The last one, Xiangpiao Restaurant, had the best location, but the building was rather old. However, after moving in, one could take over a restaurant and open a business, securing a steady future income.
Li Yi, who had been impoverished most of his life and hadn’t been wealthy for long, now truly found himself in a dilemma.
Choosing one out of three was difficult.
Couldn’t he just have them all?
That was what Li Yi thought to himself.
But that was just a thought; obviously, it wasn’t possible, so he had to make a choice.
"Since it’s difficult to choose, then I must use the process of elimination," Li Yi immediately pondered; his heart first ruled out the Flowing Years Club.
The club was nice, and living there would be comfortable. If a few beauties were added, it would indeed be delightful.
But Li Yi was inherently evil and deeply demonic, a good young man; how could he possibly indulge in luxury? Therefore, it absolutely had to be excluded.
"Xiangpiao Restaurant is nice, good location, and I could also run a business. But since I plan to change my way of living, then I can’t keep living a simple life. Times have changed; honest people don’t survive. I don’t want to waste time being a boss. This path of Cultivation and Evolution only acknowledges those who strive...without the determination to shatter utterly, how can I view the grand vista from a towering height?"
Li Yi made up his mind and immediately said, "Team Leader, I’d like the Peace Finance Building."
This choice wasn’t just about picking a place to live; it felt more like a choice in life itself.
"Peace Finance Building? Sure, no problem," Zhang Lei nodded, indicating there was no issue, but he was still somewhat surprised by Li Yi’s choice.
The building wasn’t even renovated. Besides its striking exterior and tall floors, it held little significant value and was impractical for Li Yi.
However, he didn’t ask further, knowing Li Yi had the right to choose whatever building he wanted, and the Tianchang City Investigation Bureau would agree either way.
At that moment, Li Yi felt somewhat dreamlike.
Just by speaking up in this small meeting room, could he really own all this? Forty million in cash, permanent spots in two Mysterious Object Cultivation Rooms, a building... How many years would a normal person have to struggle to achieve that?
And yet, all he had done was join the Bureau and complete a single task to get it all.
Indeed, this was exactly the kind of life that suited Li Yi.
Because only by living in such a manner did he feel his existence was justified.
He never wanted to return to that cramped, dimly lit old district where sunlight never reached, even if this choice might lead to numerous dangers in the future. But Li Yi did not regret it, he deeply understood that danger and opportunity existed together, and without repeatedly fighting, he wouldn’t have today’s earnings.
After calming his emotions, Li Yi’s heart filled with determination, and simultaneously, an inexplicable aura began to emerge from him.
It was an air of having shed the mindset of the common people, a willingness to combat this brutal world.
"Mindset changed, huh?" As an expert in Spiritual Sense, Zhang Lei sensed this subtle change in Li Yi.
He smiled slightly.
That’s more like it.
If Li Yi had been the type to hoard small advantages and slowly cultivate, Zhang Lei would have actually looked down upon him.
The world changes too quickly.
The second Sky Tipping event was even on the verge of happening.
To rise amidst adversity, one cannot shrink back.
"So, Li Yi’s choice of the Peace Finance Building isn’t for the money. The building is merely a symbol of his inner desires. He too wants to stand high amongst the clouds, overlooking the earth, to be a figure of importance," Zhang Lei roughly understood.
After making his choice, Li Yi didn’t stay in the meeting room. Although this operation had earned him great merit, he was merely an external operative, and the internal affairs of the Bureau had little to do with him.
Therefore, after thanking everyone at the Bureau, Li Yi left, using rest as an excuse.
"You should rest well these few days, there won’t be any missions for now," Zhang Lei said, intentionally giving Li Yi a few days off.
Li Yi also wanted to use this opportunity to complete the remaining training at the training facility, and then go home to sort out some family affairs.
As soon as he left the meeting room,
Wang Jian, Chen Hao, and Zheng Gong, who had been waiting outside, immediately surrounded him.
"Li Yi, how did it go? What reward did the Investigation Bureau give you?" The three were very curious and eager to know.
Li Yi smiled and said, "The Investigation Bureau gave me forty million in cash, a building, and permanent spots for two Mysterious Object Cultivation Rooms."
He saw no need to hide this, as the Bureau would surely publicize it.
"Damn, that much? Lucky you, you’re loaded now," Wang Jian’s eyes widened, immediately feeling envious.
Though he was envious, he understood that Li Yi deserved it.
After all, this time Li Yi had genuinely saved twenty investigators, including Zhang Lei. If not awarded generously, it would have been unreasonable.
"Just luck," Li Yi humbly responded with a smile.
"What do you mean luck? You earned this with your capabilities, maybe I should start following you," Wang Jian shook his head, realizing that what He Xiong previously said was true.
He would have to rely on Li Yi in the future.
He just didn’t expect that day to come so soon.
