The Masked prince
Chapter 85: An Argument

Chapter 85: An Argument

After that day, Evelyn spoke very less. It was not that before she used to be talkative. However, one staying around Evelyn who knew her for at least a few days could easily tell that she was not like before.

Her green eyes stayed dim.

The money pouch given by the prince was lying as it is on the bedside table. She didn’t even open it to count the coins.

Hannah, Miri, and Ami were left helpless by this as they didn’t know what they could do. Even Dan who came for a routine check-up on Evelyn could see it. Initially, he was afraid that Evelyn was going into depression.

He especially talked to Hannah, Miri, and Ami regarding this. After hesitancy, the three girls finally told Dan whatever happened a few days back when Evelyn received her salary.

Dan sighed.

He could treat many diseases. But he couldn’t treat lovesickness. He actually didn’t understand what the problem was.

The prince seemed to like Evelyn and Evelyn also looked upset because she had not seen the prince for so many days which indicated that her heart was also not feeling less. Then why couldn’t they just sort out whatever the problem between them was and stay happy together?

Or perhaps everyone could see their feelings for each other but only they couldn’t see it? Could it be possible?

As an old man, Dan felt rather irritated and grumpy and thought that the two people suffering from lovesickness were dumb as well.

However, he understood Evelyn’s helplessness. If the prince didn’t want then she couldn’t see him. Regan’s side was heavy so he needed to take the first step.

Day by day, Dan saw Evelyn who was also his patient eating and sleeping less, and day by day, his anger towards the prince increased.

And soon Regan could also see it.

"How is she now?"

"She is going to die soon."

Dan gave a clipped response.

Regan was startled to hear such an answer and looked at Dan whose beard was almost trembling in anger. Looking at such a picture, he couldn’t even feel angry especially when Dan asked

"What? Will Your Highness now go to his chamber and see her once?"

Regan’s face went emotionless when he heard this and didn’t say anything.

Dan felt angrier. He couldn’t understand what was going on inside the prince’s head. But there was also a limit to which he could go as a servant.

Hence, in the end, he could only leave the chambers with a frustrated heart.

Another week passed and now Evelyn was completely fine. The wound on her body was now starting to leave scars, however, Dan even prepared for her a scar removal cream.

Every day seeing the silent girl who kept everything inside her heart, Dan felt a fatherly affection emerging inside his heart slowly and slowly. He never had a family and he never felt so angry when someone was being wronged.

But he felt angry because of what was happening to this girl. Dan sighed as he knew that he couldn’t do anything.

One night, Evelyn silently shifted to her own room. Regan frowned when he heard this the next day but didn’t say anything.

Slowly, she started to help with the castle’s chores. However, she didn’t go to the prince’s side.

Finally, there was this one rare day when Elias came to the chambers and told Evelyn

"Evelyn, pack a few clothes. We will accompany His Highness to the border."

Evelyn was in the kitchen at that time. She was helping Hannah, Miri and Ami, and other maids in preparing lunch for the men practicing on the grounds.

After so many days, her eyes were filled with hope when she heard Elias.

She had been actually waiting that the prince would call her by his side to do some chores. However, as days passed her hope was converting into disappointment. But Elias finally came today.

"Alright."

She said immediately but when he was about to leave, she stopped him and asked

"When are we leaving."

"Tomorrow’s morning."

Said Elias and then left.

However, as soon as he left, Hannah couldn’t help but say

"What is His Highness thinking? Taking you to the border when you have just healed? Is that the place for girls to go?"

Evelyn looked at Hannah. Knowing that she was worried for her, she comforted her.

"Don’t worry Hannah. It’s alright. I don’t have any problem with going there."

As long as she could see him once, she didn’t mind even if she would need to go to hell. Her own desperateness scared Evelyn a little but she didn’t dare to ponder much on it.

Anyways she was a slave so she was supposed to follow whatever her master said.

However, even Ami and Miri clearly agreed with what Hannah said so they couldn’t help but say.

"Evelyn what Hannah said is right. You are not trained like those men. What if there was a sudden attack? You won’t even be able to protect yourself."

"I agree with Ami and Hannah."

Said Miri

Evelyn sighed. She also felt warmth filling her heart when she saw their worry-filled eyes. But she herself wanted to go.

However, as soon as she opened her mouth to speak, a mocking voice spoke between them.

"I actually don’t understand what the problem is. She is a slave so she is supposed to follow her master...even if it means death to her."

Almost everyone turned to look at the maid who said these words.

It was the newly appointed maid, Orla.

Seeing everyone’s eyes on her, Orla felt slightly uncomfortable but still said confidently.

"A slave’s life is not hers but her master’s. They are supposed to live as long as their master wishes. Since she is a slave, she can’t have her own thoughts. She just needs to follow His Highness silently...without having any other thoughts."

Orla’s words carried a hidden meaning that many people could understand.

However, it was still a little awkward for them to hear such words about someone. These people were from Mazic, a city where such discrimination was never done. There were no slaves and in their eyes, everyone was equal.

So even though they knew the meaning behind the black band on Evelyn’s wrist, they never treated her harshly and always took her like themselves.
