Chapter 19: Will Regan Believe Evelyn?
Chapter 19: Will Regan Believe Evelyn?
It was hard for Evelyn to say anything. This kind of situation...she was facing for the first time.
In the past, she had been beaten, starved, and tortured but she had never been doubted for something like this.
Her mind went blank as she wondered how she could make her master believe that she doesn’t have any kind of hatred inside her heart for him.
Her green eyes flashed with panic and fear when she heard Elias say
"Your Highness, regardless of what she says, it is wise to send her away. The one fact that she is from Zamorin is enough for her not to be here."
Elias finished. He just wanted to remind his master. If it was in his power, he would have already sent Evelyn away. To him, his master’s safety was the first and foremost priority.
Evelyn’s fast heartbeat suddenly went calm when she heard this. A bitter smile couldn’t help but the surface on her lips.
Zamorin...it was the Empire where she had faced the horrible moments of her life. An Empire that she would never like to go back to again because the horrors of the past lived there. And today the same Empire was an obstacle in her way of having this little bit of kindness she was getting from her kind master.
Coldness filled her heart and her eyes also went cold.
Her explanation doesn’t even matter now.
Amidst all this, Regan was silently observing her. He saw how her fists unclenched completely after she heard Elias’ words.
As if she had given up. He didn’t know why but looking at her actions, he felt a faint ache in his heart similar to the one he had felt years ago when he was sent away to the battlefield years ago.
A moment later, he asked coldly
"Do you not have anything to say?"
One who knew Regan well would know that Regan was already breaking his own laws by giving Evelyn a chance to prove that she was innocent.
Because he never cared before about anyone and this behavior of his master confused Elias as well.
By now, his master should have thrown out this girl who could be a potential threat not only to him but to Alfaros as well. After all, if she stayed around, then she could get to know the things that could harm Alfaros.
Evelyn, on the other hand, raised her head slightly to look at Regan.
Did it matter what she had to say in her defense?
Though she didn’t have any hope, she couldn’t help but try once when she saw the pair of red eyes focused on herself.
He has been so lenient to her. She didn’t want to disappoint him.
"Your Highness...I can never blame you for anything. It was not because of Your Highness that I became a slave. I was already a slave before the war even started. Yes, my tribe was destroyed in this war but if it is regarding my relations to the tribe then I would only be grateful to Your Highness for destroying it."
Evelyn paused for a moment as she swallowed and continued
"My father...he was the head of the tribe. When I was one year old, he was killed mysteriously."
A flicker of coldness flashed in Evelyn’s eyes as she said these words and Regan noticed it well, surprised by the sudden change in her emotions.
When she continued, her eyes were colder but her voice was soft and polite.
"My uncle...took his position."
It didn’t take Regan even a moment to know what she was saying. Her uncle killed her father to take the position.
"So when the war started, it was my Uncle who was ruling the tribe with whom I didn’t have any sort of attachment. So I don’t care what happened to the tribe."
Just like how the tribe people didn’t care for her father’s mysterious death. Evelyn had wanted to say but stopped herself.
Finished, she looked at Regan who was looking at her with an emotionless face. She blinked when she heard him ask
"What happened after that?"
After what? After her uncle became the head?
A forlorn look flashed in Evelyn’s cold eyes. She stopped herself from lingering in the darkness of the past and tried to answer in a calm voice
"Nothing...I was sold to become a slave."
Evelyn didn’t seem to realize but her voice came out slightly firm ...as if she wanted this talk to end then and there...as if she wouldn’t answer anything more about her past.
A flicker of surprise flashed in Regan’s life.
There was more to it. He could feel it.
But as he looked at the girl who suddenly seemed to build high walls of defense around herself, he didn’t have the heart to push her more.
However, he had one more question.
"That day in the arena...How did you open the door?"
Evelyn was calm as she answered this question.
"Three years ago, I was a slave of a noble lady in Zamorin. The lady had the same lock on her room’s door. Since she used to stay out most of the day, she taught me how to open the lock so that I could open it and clean the room in her absence...That’s how I knew how to open the lock."
Regan was silent for a moment.
He knew that Evelyn was not lying. The locks were especially discovered in Alfaros. A few might have reached Zamorin as well as both were neighboring Empire.
In Alfaros, the locks were used by noble families and most of the time servants were not taught how to open these locks. Only trusted ones might get the chance to learn.
Evelyn’s answer only proved that she was trusted by her mistress.
"Alright, have dinner."
Regan said calmly and started eating his own portion. Elias was shocked when he heard these words and looked at his master
"Your High..."
Regan’s gaze shut him up instantly.
The masked prince then looked at the dazed girl kneeling on the ground and said in displeasure
"Get up."
Does she not feel how cold the ground is?
Evelyn instantly got out of her daze and got up from the ground. Until she sat on the seat and started her dinner, she still couldn’t believe that Regan really believed her.
As she ate, she couldn’t help but glance at him again.
She had not been left out of the rumors about Regan. People said that he was cruel, cold, and a very hot-tempered person. With that, he had a horrid scar on his face that no person would want to see.
But Evelyn’s opinion differed.
It was only from the outside that he looked cold. He was kind. He didn’t look down on others.
So what if he has a scar on his face?
She had seen many beautiful faces in her life but with the ugliest heart and cruelty that no one wanted to witness.
Those people perhaps don’t know.
The owner of a beautiful face could be ugliest but the one with a beautiful heart...is always beautiful in every aspect.
