Chapter 275: The Elemental Springs (1)

0% Every atomic bomb that was made, the Demon King shoved them all into his mouth.

“Why are you eating the bombs?”

“That I may use it myself.”

The Demon King’s ability.

When he ate an intelligent being, he could absorb their knowledge and ability. With inanimate objects, on the other hand, he could manifest their characteristics as many times as the number of them eaten.

So if he ate three atomic bombs, he could use nuclear explosions only three times.

As such, he had to eat as many bombs as possible before the great war began.

Having absorbed about ten multi-ton bombs already, the Demon King grew greatly in stature.

“You, there.”

“Yes, my lord.”

“The moment it strikes midnight next week, tell the Heavens to begin what they’ve been told. I will bring down the Empire myself.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

The Demon King was eating away at the facility even now.

The way he consumed the objects was like a big snake; he’d compress the item as much as possible and swallow it down all at once.

Every time the Demon King opened his mouth, Wilhelm watched carefully.

Just what in the world is that.

There were no teeth in the Demon King’s mouth.

Instead, there were dozens of tentacles with suckers, and he’d use these to send the items taken to his mouth down his throat.

With each atomic bomb the Demon King consumed, the size of his esophagus and tentacles grew a bit bigger.

How do all those fit into his stomach?

It was the greatest mystery to Wilhelm.

No matter how he looked at it, it was defying conservation of mass.

So this is what it takes to be the Demon King.

He wasn’t one to talk as someone with a big weapon for a head, but he decided to think of the Demon King as a foreign entity and nodded.

**
I explained all that had happened to everyone including President Cecil.

The process of enlisting in the Demon Army, the process of developing a grudge against the world, even the mental process of why I suddenly had a change of heart and surrendered.

Actually, it was closer to unloading than an explanation. At the same time, it was an apology to the people of this country.

“I see, so that’s how it is.”

Thankfully, Cecil accepted what I said to some extent.

“It’s true that the Golden-Eyed have been discriminated against. You probably must have gone through all sorts of unspeakable things. Would it be alright if I apologize for this?”

“You don’t have anything to apologize for, President.”

We calculated our words and played along with each other.

In fact, there was a reason why Cecil was acting so respectful.

It was because she was the one who employed me. If rumors of me being one of the Demon Army kept going around, then it would mean Cecil, having hired me, would go down as well.

In some ways, we were in the same political boat.

Of course, those who were critical of Cecil began coming after me.

Like right now.

“President, traffic is being held up due to the protestors blocking all the main roads.”

An elf dressed neatly in a suit suddenly appeared and informed us of this.

As for who it was, he was apparently someone quite high up in the administration.

But why was someone in the administration coming to the President’s office and saying this? Didn’t they usually go on site to deal with road problems?

That thought didn’t last long. The man swiveled his eyes and looked at me.

“Tsk.”

What, asshole.

The guy glared at me, so I glared back.

My eyes must have been chilling because Vermel, who had been sitting nearby, freaked out and placated me.

“There, there.”

To be honest, I knew in my head–that I wouldn’t be able to get along with everyone.

I was the dumbass for having believed in innate goodness in the first place. So I had decided that from now on, I was only going to live for the people who cared about me.

But what I felt in my heart was completely different.

“What are the military and prosecution doing? Can’t even capture one damn Beast.”

“Excuse me, that person is right here so if you could be a little more gentle with your words....”

“Apologies but they are not my words; it’s what the people are saying.”

He scratched his head as if troubled, not that he even had any hair to scratch.

Such gestures were all a pretense, anyway. Seeing guys who feigned ignorance like this got my blood boiling.

“Please don’t do anything, please....”

Vermel whispered in a low voice.

“Huu.”

Yeah, I should restrain myself.

I was about to find the reflection coefficient of his head to calm myself down.

“The reason why I’m here is to advise you to throw out this Beast.”

“What?”

Well, that was direct.

I thought that if I held back here, I’d be a fool. I slammed my teacup down and stood up violently.

Vermel panicked, but the water had already been spilled.

A public official speaking like that in front of the actual person? He was as crazy as it got.

I first expressed my displeasure respectfully.

“Sir, your words are a bit harsh.”

“I’ve only said what was necessary as a public servant. If you have any shame, I ask that you make an appearance before the prosecution and law enforcers.”

“Even the Elemental Kings accepted and understood my true intentions. I have no reason to be investigated.”

“I am speaking from the perspective of public affairs apart from church and state. Not even the Kings themselves may interfere with Kaurelia’s administration, and this country cannot grant you immunity.”

The conversation was growing more hostile. Each word seemed to be hiding daggers.

I got into an argument for over ten minutes, and it soon escalated to personal attacks being added to the mix of exchanged words.

“Do you know what my family name is? It’s Rothschild. Breathing the same air as you is a disgrace to me.”

“I don’t know about your name, but I know that you certainly act like a child.”

“Do not mock my family. I will not be able to stand it.”

“That will be me if you keep going like this.”

“Are you intending to fire Flare, perhaps? If so, then I am very sorry.......”

“No, I won’t. It won’t work on you anyway.”

“......?”

With a smirk, I pointed to my forehead.

“Because you have a reflectivity of 1.”

“Wait, what do you....”

I had no patience to give him time to think. Waving my hand, I cut his words off.

“Although I carry black blood, I have intelligence. I don’t want to be causing unnecessary conflict.”

I said using some political rhetoric. He should be seething inside right now.

But what was he going to do about it.

The Elemental Kings were now on my side, and many of the elves with Elemental faith had started to treat me favorably. This had to be a serious headache for the government who had to be conscious of the public.

Right, if it hadn’t been for my sister, things would have been more difficult. I’d have had to help these assholes for Lotte and Freyr alone.

And what a relief that it didn’t get to that point.

Besides, there was a decisive reason that the elf country had to support me.

“...I’ll be taking my leave.”

Having lost the argument, it was as he was about to leave with a red face.

The office door opened with a bang and an assistant who had been waiting outside ran in.

“Sir, we have trouble.”

The assistant’s face was ghostly white.

“What happened?”

Whisper whisper.

“......!”

“Why. What is it?”

Cecil asked but she didn’t get a response, meaning that it was something that couldn’t be said due to it being confidential.

Although I had a guess as to what was being said.

Afterwards, he left without another word.

As Cecil was looking confused, Vermel spoke up.

“I think the Demon King is back.”

**
Demon King Parcelsus.

The Demon King I knew was a monster who was thorough and methodical in everything he did.

There were even rumors that being sealed by the Goddess had been part of his calculation.

If Dark Day isn’t finished, he would be someone that difficult.

But before making Dark Day, there was something I needed to do.

“I’m going to go to a place called the Elemental Spring.”

–was what I revealed as Vermel and I shared drinks for the first time in a while.

“What?”

Vermel emptied the liquor in his on-the-rocks glass. His face twisted like dry fish, turning stupid.

I continued without delay.

“The Water King said that in order to save Lotte, she needs to bathe for 24 hours in this Elemental Spring. Said that from there we need to ask the Goddess directly.”

“.......”

Vermel’s face hardened.

“No, don’t go.”

“Why?”

“If a Beast goes into the spring, you’re going to become terminal.”

This was kind of funny.

“Become terminal for dunking myself in a bit of water? I said that this world isn’t a game.”

“It’s not just water; it’s holy water that’s said to be extremely poisonous to Beasts.”

“So what if it’s holy water?”

Water was water. One oxygen, two hydrogens; dihydrogen monoxide.

A person becoming terminally ill for soaking in such a substance for a day? Even a dog somersault with laughter at that.

“Anyway, you can’t. I’ll find some other way, so don’t go to the Elemental Realm.”

We couldn’t have a proper conversation after that, because this drunk guy kept repeating himself.

Please don’t go. Don’t go because it’s dangerous. Please, please.......

But I had already made up my mind.

So the next day.

I met secretly with Secuel away from Vermel or other people.

“It isn’t that time doesn’t pass at all in the Elemental World. Your friend is slowly dying even now.”

Secuel’s words were extrememly devastating.

“How long does she have?”

“At the earliest, she will pass within a week.”

Crunch.

I bit down on my lip unconsciously.

If there was enough time, the right thing to do would be to make Dark Day, then save Lotte. Because with the Demon King having risen, it would be very difficult to clean up the world without Dark Day.

Things were even worse since I gave all the instructions on how to build the atomic bombs.

Vermel assured that we’d be able to take down the ‘Demon King who hadn’t eaten atomic bombs’. But with the Demon King having gotten his hands on the bombs, it was all over.

We were now at a point where there really was no hope without my magic.

And because Secuel knew this, she told me with a stern face.

“You are already tight on time even if you start preparations to defeat the Demon King right now.”

The warning didn’t end there.

“As well, the Elemental Spring is a divine place. As a Beast, it’ll be painful for you to even be inside it. It could even shorten your lifespan. Yet do you still have confidence to endure the spring for a day for the sake of one human girl?”

Shorten my lifespan? So Vermel wasn’t wrong after all.

But I answered with a snort.

“If it hadn’t been for her, this world would have been done for by now.”

There weren’t many who knew that Lotte had saved this world. Even the Elemental Kings didn’t know the full story.

If I disappear now, it would be hopeless all the same.

The Elementals needed to realize that it was no longer one monster who could go around firing atomic bombs.

I asked.

“If my lifespan gets shortened, by how much would it be?”

“That would depend on the complexity of the wish. But if it’s saving a dying person....”

Secuel thought for a moment, then whispered in my ear.

“......That’s good enough.”

Seemingly pleased with my answer, a light smile crossed Secuel’s lips.

“Then shall we go in?”

My answer was the same.

“Yes.”
