Chapter 272: The Demon King (2)

0% Jǫrmungandr’s breathing became ragged.

“This one’s cousin is the strongest in the seas. He could not have lost in the waters.”

At first, there was heavy doubt.

Jǫrmungandr couldn’t accept two facts.

The first being that her relative had passed away, and the second was that the person who harmed him was Winter Heaven.

“Did you all see it correctly? Somebody! Gather all the staff in the area!”

More Golden-Eyeds came and watched the video as per Jǫrmungandr’s request, but every one of them turned pale said the same thing.

“Dark Day....”

“...seems to be right, Autumn Heaven.”

The Demon Army believed that the atomic bomb Aether developed was Dark Day.

Jǫrmungandr, who had been floundering, bit down on her lip, her expression one as if she found a hole.

“So, Spring. You said you used that weapon in your operation. Then what guarantees that that is a Dark Day fired by Winter?”

“Then watch the part that was a bit before that.”

Pasmo put in another tape and played it.

Before the bomb exploded, one silhouette entered and exited the base.

When they increased the resolution and zoomed in on that section, they began to see a girl’s face that was familiar to the other staff.

“It’s Lady Winter.”

“It is.”

“Winter Heaven betrayed us.”

In the video, Aether went into the base by herself, planted the bomb, and left. Not one Beast at the base stopped or chastised her.

Of course, since they would’ve thought she was an ally.

“Winter’s Dark Day works by dropping it through Castle Bravo, but nothing dropped even when I rewound to a prior time. Am I wrong, gentlemen?”

“Not a single lie was told.”

“Alright. Then that would mean that there’s another way to detonate besides dropping it.... Gentlemen, who do you think would best know such a way?”

The answer was obvious.

“It should be Winter Heaven, the developer.”

“Well said.”

Jǫrmungandr stumbled and slumped in her seat.

It was such an absurd truth.

“One of my few living relatives... passed away like this...?”

Tragic didn’t even begin to describe how ridiculous it was.

It was so ridiculous that Jǫrmungandr had to smirk. An aborted laugh broke through her teeth.

That was the catalyst.

A laughter of disbelief began spilling like a river bursting through the bank. The ancient dragon who had lived over a millennium began to wheeze with laughter for the first time in a while.

Crying as she laughed. Laughing as she cried.

It was just as she was about to break into expletives that hadn’t been used in a while.

“However.”

In the midst of this hostile atmosphere, Pasmo spoke up.

“Autumn, we have obtained a way to get revenge on Winter who betrayed us.”

Hearing that, Jǫrmungandr’s head turned slowly. While she couldn’t see at all, her hearing was sharper than anyone else.

Just in time, two sets of footsteps were heard in the distance.

“Lord Spring.”

“We’ve brought the outcome of this expedition.”

Creak, creak.

A jade-colored gem on a large wheelbarrow.

Even Jǫrmungandr whose vision was completely dark could instantly recognize what the jewel brought by the two Beasts was.

“Is that, the Lodestone...?”

“That’s right.”

She could feel the soul resonating vwoom, vwoom from within the stone.

Demon King Parcelsus.

It was the wavelength of that man’s mana wave.

“With this we have all the Lodestones. Say the word and we will prepare the ritual.”

“Give us the next order, Lord Spring.”

The Great Mechas Tertius and Quintus were waiting on one knee.

Spring Heaven’s grin stretched all the way to his ears.

Preferably he wanted to get on with the ritual right now, but there was still one thing left to do.

“What do you think, Autumn?”

Which was to ask what Jǫrmungandr wanted.

It was regarding the resurrection of the Demon King so of course she couldn’t oppose it, as opposing basically meant betraying the Demon Army.

Pasmo was asking Jǫrmungandr something else.

Do you want to get revenge through the ‘means’ of the Demon King?’

Would you even use our lord in order to expose the traitor?

Although she dedicated to the cause, Jǫrmungandr didn’t particularly have much loyalty to the Demon King himself.

She was driven by the prosperity of her kind in the first place, so there was no hesitation in nodding.

“...Fine. Prepare to build the altar immediately.”

“Now we’re talking!”

Pasmo waved his hands and dismissed Tertius Wilhelm and Quartus Entero.

Everything was falling into place according to plan.

The corners of his mouth kept lifting upward at the thought.

“The rest of you, get back to what you were doing as well.”

“Yes, sir.”

Dismissing everyone except Jǫrmungandr, Pasmo maneuvered his long arms and took the gourd-shaped bottle hanging on his waist.

Gush, gush, gush.

After pouring some hard liquor down his throat, Pasmo glared at Jǫrmungandr with a deeply flushed face.

His iris, peeking through the wrapped bandages, flickered brightly in the glare of the lanterns.

**
“What did you say?”

Bang!

Summer Heaven Gilach, who had been in the middle of torturing an Elemental, jumped from his seat at his subordinate’s message.

“They stole the Wind Lodestone? When?”

“That... was a moment ago.”

“That damn bastard─!!”

Gilach face turned purple.

Tearing the already ragged Lesser Elemental into shreds, Gilach grit his teeth and spit curse after curse at Pasmo.

His subordinate couldn’t understand this attitude of Summer Heaven.

“Um, isn’t it a good thing? The Demon King will soon come back to life.”

“No, no. That isn’t the problem.”

Gilach brushed his hair back angrily.

“That bastard Pasmo said that we could take it easy, but then did things on his own. To monopolize the favor of our soon-to-be-resurrected King!”

That Spring bastard, who had said they would plan together, went ahead by himself and stole the credit.

Simply put, it was ‘backstabbing’.

It was infuriating for Gilach who had intended to reap all the benefits when Aether burned the World Tree then toss her away.

Like this, he just became someone who did nothing but play with Elementals.

He was so frustrated at the thought and was about to go mad with rage.

“You’re still fine, sir.”

“...Hm?”

A man wearing a crow’s beak mask appeared from behind a pillar.

His height looked to be between three to five meters, a Beast with bright yellow eyes and long arms.

“Quintus?”

“Yes, sir.”

Quintus of the Great Mechas, ‘Pestilence’ Entero Colitica.

The Cataclysm, famous for bringing the Black Death upon the Empire, bowed before Gilach.

“I thought you acted on Spring Heaven’s orders this time.”

“Of course I should follow when a superior gives the orders.”

Entero adjusted his beak mask and continued.

“But the only one I respect is you, Lord Summer.”

“Oho.”

Entero and Gilach had a lot in common.

One of them was that they enjoyed mindless slaughter. As one who enjoyed spreading plagues, he had always looked up to those who were highly sadistic–was how Entero justified his support.

Listening, Gilach nodded his head.

The flattery didn’t stop there.

“Although the Wind Lodestone may be Spring Heaven’s achievement, the Earth Lodestone was taken before that on my own initiative. But I have long since believed that Lord Summer is the most worthy of the King’s favor.”

“Hmm, hmm.”

“And so I would like to dedicate that credit to you, sir....”

“Huhuhu.”

Gilach’s lips split all the way to his ears.

He even stopped raging and walked over to where Entero was. Then, he held out his hook arm and offered a handshake.

Entero’s hand was also like metal claws so shaking hands was no problem.

“What a loyal subject. Huhahaha!”

Gilach patted Entero’s back like he was proud of him. He had originally intended to pat his shoulders, but there was too much of a height difference.

The corners of his eyes curving upwards, Entero turned serious and spoke.

“If Spring Heaven says he as the Wind stone, say that you have the Earth. The land on which one stands is more important than a wind that tickles the ears, so present it as if you are dedicating land to our lord and take the opportunity to be rewarded.”

He was suggesting to distract the point, but it didn’t matter to Gilach; after all, His Majesty was quite fond of artistic words.

“That certainly is eloquent. Do you have anything else you’d like to add?”

“Yes, sir.”

Entero continued.

“Also, I ask that you prepare for what’s to come, rather than what has passed.”

“What’s to come?”

“The past is like spilled water; once it is gone, it cannot be turned back. But the future is different. As you are the best of the Four Heavens at subduing Elementals, our King who has a deep grudge against the Elementals will inevitably give you the most military opportunities.”

So please prepare as much as you can for the battle that is to come. With that added, Entero bowed his head.

“If you do well in the war without incident, then the succession will be yours.”

“Huhahahaha!! Indeed, you are right!”

Gilach clapped like a seal, shoulders bouncing.

“Indeed, Autumn is stupid and Spring is overly cautious. They’re both fools who are a step away from wars.”

“Yes, so that is why I have my eyes set on you, isn’t it?”

Entero also chuckled along with Gilach.

“You should first go and see the ritual. Let us celebrate the resurrection of His Majesty.”

“Yes, let’s.”

Gilach walked ahead, and Entero followed slowly behind him.

Entero’s eyes glinted strangely.
