Chapter 41: The Suspect: Viktor!

Eduardo was done with the work that Marcello was supposed to finish. Just as he took his eyes off his ink-stained hands, he heard a loud thud.

He immediately stood up from the chair to see the cause of the sound and saw Marcello on the floor. Eduardo folded his lips into a thin line, holding back his laugh.

Marcello let out a groan as his body hit the ground. He blinked repeatedly before he finally realised he had fallen from the couch. He touched his back, looked at the couch and then at Eduardo, who was in his seat.

"What did you do to me?" He asked, struggling to stand up. He was still processing how he ended up on the floor.

"A little bit of your work. You’re welcome" Eduardo took his black box and walked towards the door. He was about to leave the office, leaving Marcello even confused. Marcello still wanted to know how he got on the couch, why he fell, and what Eduardo was doing in his seat.

"Ah yes, I forgot to tell you. If there’s anyone you should trust in this Manor. It would be Mario. So, give him a chance and continue to trust him. However, watch out for Viktor. If I were you, I’d do a background search about him. Just my instinct!" Eduardo walked out, slamming the door.

Marcello was still shocked to see Eduardo in his seat.

’Did he ruin my work?’

He grumbled and rushed to the desk. He grabbed one file and scanned it. It was... Perfect.

He picked another one and the other. His eyes widened in amazement as his lips curved into a smile.

Everything was perfect!

"How did he... He did everything within this short period"

He dropped the files on the table and remembered what Eduardo said before leaving. Trust Mario, who had only spent a few years with him, and investigate Viktor, who had been with him since he was little.

Marcello grabbed his head, letting out a grunt. It was throbbing in pain, because of how he fell to the ground.

"Do I have to do what he says? He doesn’t know anything about me. He’s just a mere slave and..." He paused and stared at the perfect work Eduardo did. He shook his head and finally changed his mind.

"Maybe he’s not a mere slave. And, I should probably investigate Viktor, just this time" he added after deciding to trust Eduardo’s instinct.

"I should probably go to sleep" he yawned as water gathered at the corner of his eyes.

Meanwhile, as soon as Eduardo left Marcello’s office, he got dragged to a corner by Viktor. The old man took off his one-eyed glass and slipped it into his pocket. He also checked his pocket watch and frowned.

"Six hours and thirty minutes. That’s how much time you spent with the young master in his office. What the hell were you doing in there?" Viktor pushed Eduardo to the wall.

"Why would you like to know? Are you afraid that the young master doesn’t trust you anymore? Are you scared that he’s keeping me, a stranger close and doubting your loyalty?" Eduardo teased him.

Viktor raised his hand to punch Eduardo but diverted his fist to the wall instead. He didn’t want to make a bruise on Eduardo’s face. It could alert Marcello. Viktor didn’t want to get yelled at by him at all.

Earlier, Marcello had called all the staff in the manor. He was already doubting everyone’s loyalty to him. There was no one he could trust, not even Viktor. Viktor didn’t see Eduardo around and he started to wonder...

’If that brat isn’t here, does that mean the young master trusts him? What about me? Why wouldn’t he trust me?’

Marcello asked all the unfinished tasks be handed back to him by Mario. He was going to handle everything himself from now on. He didn’t want anyone close to his room and he’ll won’t eat food served by them anymore.

The men wore a sad look on their faces. They were, of course, loyal to Marcello. They didn’t want to be placed in the same position as the traitor.

Due to Marcello’s fury, they didn’t have the chance to plead with him. Mario also handed all the documents to Marcello. He locked himself in the office, trying to finish the tasks. He didn’t accept help from Viktor even when he offered to help. All he wanted was coffee.

He spent three days on coffee and after the third day, Eduardo’s identification card arrived. Marcello almost cursed his father for sending it late but held himself back.

Viktor, who handed the card to Marcello, saw the dark circles under his young master’s eyes and was worried.

"Young master, let me help you. You can trust me, can’t you?"

"No, I can’t trust you. Fetch Eduardo. Tell him to report to my office immediately" Marcello ordered and slammed the door on Viktor’s face. Ever since then and when he heard the gunshot, he wasn’t allowed into the office.

It was just Eduardo.

Eduardo wore a poker face, still hoping to leave from Viktor’s side.

"The young master still trusts me. Just wait; I’ll make sure the young master sends you out of here himself. When that happens, I’ll get rid of you. I’ve done it before and I’ll do it again" he grinned and roughly pushed Eduardo to the wall.

He grabbed his glasses and walked away.

Eduardo stood like a statue, replaying Viktor’s last sentence over and over again.

’He has done it before and he’ll do it again? He... Was he responsible for everything? No way! He can’t possibly be’

Eduardo clenched his fist angrily, staring into the thin air. If Viktor was responsible for the contract not reaching the Morano family, how would he be able to expose everything to Marcello? He would be questioned. He can’t tell anyone that he’s Carlo.

’What the hell do I do?’

Eduardo walked his way to his room and safely kept the gun he was gifted. His eyes scanned the room and an idea suddenly popped up in his head.

"Maybe I just have to find proof first. I don’t need to get Marcello involved yet. If that bastard old man is the one responsible for my death and my family’s downfall, I’ll kill him ten times over and make sure he goes to hell. I’ll meet him in hell and kill him again and again. He’d better have luck on his side"

Eduardo was furious as the air around him suddenly changed.
