Chapter 690: Chapter 679: Made a Move

The old nurse had just come in when she heard these words. She hurriedly sent everyone away and whispered about what had happened earlier that morning, "I saw it with my own eyes, the manager from Jishi Hall delivered the prescription. Look, should we invite Young Lady Zhou in to help?"

Old Madam Ji thought for a moment and shook her head, "There’s no need. She is young and, although she may know a bit more because of her family’s scholarly background, she certainly can’t compare to Doctor Ji and Fan Imperial Physician when it comes to practice. Right now, there’s no need to irritate Doctor Ji for this matter. If he’s willing to try his best, it makes no difference whether the child comes in or not to us."

After all, with Doctor Ji here, she would naturally be a help to them, as she is now.

After a moment of thought, the old nurse asked, "What about the medicine..."

"We’ll follow Doctor Ji and the others," said Old Madam Ji, holding her prayer beads, "Come, let’s go to the Buddhist hall and pray to the bodhisattva. I only hope that this medicine will be effective this time."

The old nurse quickly helped her up and asked, "What about the outside? It seems Second Old Master intends to reconcile with the Ying Family."

Old Madam Ji scoffed, "Reconcile? If Hao’er survives, I’ll let them be. But if Hao’er doesn’t make it, I’d like to see who dares to talk about reconciliation."

The old nurse bowed her head and said nothing.

Old Madam Ji, holding onto her hand, slowly headed for the Buddhist hall, "His return is good too, someone needs to handle matters outside. You go and tell Ji Zhong to hand over the list of witnesses we have gathered to him. He needs to start making moves, protect those who should be protected. We can’t wait until the Ying Family has bought off everyone while we remain idle."

"I have limited energy," said Old Madam Ji. "If I take care of the inside, I won’t be able to manage the outside. His return is just right."

The old nurse responded softly with a "Yes."

Old Madam Ji wasn’t worried that Ji Xiang would lack diligence. Even if he was inclined towards reconciliation, he wouldn’t let the Ying Family take advantage. So he would surely protect the evidence and witnesses that were in their favor.

The preliminary squabbling was a tedious task that Old Madam Ji didn’t have the energy for. As for the final negotiations, whether to reconcile or not, that wasn’t for Ji Xiang to decide alone.

Old Madam Ji arrived at the Buddhist hall and knelt down, picking up the prayer beans and praying wholeheartedly for Ji Hao to safely overcome his predicament.

In Ji Hao’s courtyard, the air was filled with the scent of medicine. Fan Imperial Physician brought over the concoction and had the servants by his side pour it into Hao’er...

After one dose of medicine and about half an hour later, another bowl of medicine was brought over. The servants carefully administered it and just after he finished drinking, the ointment for external use was also ready. Fan Imperial Physician personally applied the ointment.

This was a completely new prescription and also their last hope. If this had no effect either, the four doctors would be at a loss.

At least with what they currently knew, they really had no other options left.

Everyone watched Ji Hao closely. The doctors that day were all very serious, comparable to the day Ji Hao had been carried back.

Doctor Ji had already removed the fever-reducing needles. After waiting for about a quarter of an hour, he touched his forehead and his eyes lit up slightly. He asked Fan Imperial Physician and the others to check if the fever had reduced somewhat.

Fan Imperial Physician and the other two confirmed and nodded, "It seems to have gone down a bit."

Doctor Ji said, "We can use the needle again in the afternoon, then we’ll know if the medicine had any effect."

Fan Imperial Physician replied, "Let’s see how tonight goes. If he gets through it, there’s more hope."

He turned to instruct the servants by his side, "Give him more water to drink."

"Yes."

The new prescription seemed to work better than they had expected. By the afternoon’s second dosing, Doctor Ji was already noticing changes in the pulse. He excitedly called over Fan Imperial Physician to confirm.

After checking the pulse, Fan Imperial Physician slightly nodded and opened his clothes to look at the wound, "Bring some saltwater. We shall clean the wound to see it, and change the dressing while at it."

Compared to the morning, the wound wasn’t as red now, and the effects of contraction seemed better too; even the least experienced Doctor Ding could see it.

Spirits lifted among everyone upon seeing this, and excitement surged throughout the Ji Family. Hot water and medicine continually flowed into the small courtyard.

Ji Xiang, having just come back from the County Government Office and not having had a chance to catch his breath, ran to the small courtyard to stay by his son’s side.

Second Madam Ji didn’t have time to be angry with him anymore. Both sat quietly by the head and foot of the bed, lost in their thoughts.

There was no festive atmosphere at the Ji Family, only a dullness, but there was lively activity in a certain small courtyard on Kangxue Street.

Manbao and the others had their dinner early. As soon as it got dark, they hung lanterns under the gallery and set up a table in the courtyard.

The table was laden with pastries, Aunt Rong brought out the steamed crabs, and the sauces were placed on the table. Zhou SiLang and Daji opened the wine, and everyone sat around the table, happily chatting and enjoying the feast.

Manbao felt that this was how to truly celebrate a festival. The previous two days had been a waste.

Manbao tasted wine for the first time, carefully bringing the cup to her lips and first taking a deep sniff, commenting, "It smells so good."

Then she took a careful sip.

Manbao savored the taste of chrysanthemum wine with the tip of her tongue, finding it a bit bitter but tolerable. Yet, after the bitterness, there was a slight sweetness and a uniquely aromatic fragrance lingering in her mouth, quite delightful.

Manbao decided she didn’t dislike the sensation and downed the drink in one go, then smiled at Bai Shan.

Bai Shan too finished his drink and said, "The bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness, beyond that there doesn’t seem to be much of a special feeling."

Mr. Zhuang watched them cheerfully, "This wine is strong, don’t be greedy. Two cups per person should suffice."

At that moment, neither of them were particularly fond of drinking. They acknowledged his advice with a nod and then reached for the crabs on the table.

Mr. Zhuang smiled contentedly as he watched them enjoy, noting their flushed faces after eating just one crab, clearly feeling the effects of the alcohol.

Manbao felt dizzily sleepy and wished to go to bed, so she took a groggy look at everyone and then got up to wash her hands and go to sleep.

Bai Shan, however, kept glancing at the wine bottle, seemingly wanting another drink.

In the middle of the night, Fan Imperial Physician and Doctor Chen, who were on duty, came to administer medicine and change bandages for Ji Hao. Ji Xiang, exhausted from rushing around all day and since returning home had been kept busy, had fallen asleep on the soft bed in his room.

He immediately woke up upon hearing some noise, wiped his face, and watched as Fan Imperial Physician and Chen changed the dressings. When he saw Fan Imperial Physician cleaning his son’s long, winding abdominal wound with saltwater, he couldn’t help but ask, "Lord Fan, how is my son doing?"

Fan Imperial Physician examined the wound in the light and nodded, "It looks even better than this afternoon, which means the medicine is working."

Ji Xiang let out a sigh of relief, and looking down at his son, he noticed that his son’s eyelids seemed to tremble. His eyes widened in shock as he observed the fluttering and exclaimed excitedly, "Lord Fan, look! Is my son about to wake up?"

Fan Imperial Physician hurriedly checked and noticed Ji Hao’s fingers were also moving. He immediately instructed, "Lord Ji, call out to him."
