Chapter 684: Chapter 673: Visiting
Bai Shan asked, "Master, what should we do if they send more gifts tomorrow?"
Mr. Zhuang laughed, "Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the Ji Family to visit Young Master Ji. Come to think of it, you all know him and are friends, especially you Shanbao, since you were classmates. It has been two days since his fall from the horse, and it’s about time you paid a visit."
Manbao immediately asked, "What gifts should we prepare?"
Mr. Zhuang said, "Tomorrow we will rise early and go to Qixia Temple to pray for blessings, to ask for a peace charm or peace clasp for Young Master Ji. For the Ji Family, that would be the best gift."
Even Bai Erlang couldn’t help but give a thumbs up to his master, feeling that the idea was excellent.
Bai Shan asked, "We haven’t sent our visiting cards today."
"They have already been delivered," Mr. Zhuang said with a smile. "I had your Uncle Master Lan help send them, and we’ve already received a reply that we can go tomorrow."
The Ji Family had kept their doors closed to most visitors these past few days, receiving only close relatives and a few academic officials from the imperial college.
Yet today, the Ji Family opened their side door to welcome guests, and not only did Mr. Zhuang lead his three disciples, but several other adults also came with their children to pay a visit.
Among them was Wei Ting. His parents were there, and this time they brought him to visit Ji Hao.
After a glance, Bai Shan quietly said to Manbao, "They are all witnesses who were by Ji Hao’s side that day."
It seemed that they had all received significant gifts from the Ying Family, which is why they came to visit together.
Similarly, it was obvious that the Ji Family knew about this, hence their decision to open their doors.
As a result, upon entering, they did not see Ji Hao. Everyone met with Old Madam Ji in the front hall.
The visiting adults did not mind whether they could see Ji Hao or not. Their purpose was to show their stance to the Ying Family. They might not speak much in favor of the Ji Family, but they would definitely not say anything unnecessary against the Ying Family.
The Ji Family too had already thoroughly investigated the cause and aftermath of the conflict, and they did not need the witnesses to say much; stating the facts was enough for them.
Therefore, the guests got along quite amicably with Old Madam Ji.
However, several of the younger friends who were close to Ji Hao really wanted to see him. As the adults were busy chatting, they slipped away from the hall towards the back courtyard.
They were stopped outside the courtyard, however, as Ji Hao’s condition was not good, and the Ji Family did not allow outsiders to enter.
Wei Ting, looking devastated, turned back and upon seeing Manbao and the others staring blankly in the garden, approached and asked, "Bai Shan, did you also receive gifts from the Ying Family?"
Bai Shan hummed in acknowledgment and asked, "How is Ji Hao?"
Wei Ting shook his head. "I can’t go in and don’t know the situation."
While they were talking, a maid rushed towards them, curtsied to the crowd, and then turned to Manbao, asking, "Are you Miss Man from Jishi Hall?"
Manbao hesitated before nodding.
The maid then said, "Doctor Ji invites you to meet with him."
Bai Shan glanced at her and stood up, saying, "I’ll go with her."
The maid hesitated, "This..."
Bai Shan frowned and sharply said, "Stop the nonsense, will he see us or not? If so, lead the way."
Bai Erlang asked, "What about me?"
"You stay with Wei Ting. Don’t wander around; either wait here for us, or go to the front and find our master."
The maid led them to Ji Hao’s courtyard. At the gate, the maid presented a token for the gatekeeper to inspect before allowing both Bai Shan and Manbao to enter.
Upon entering Ji Hao’s courtyard, the smell of medicine wafted through the air. The maid did not lead them to the main hall but to a side room where Doctor Ji, alongside Imperial Physician Chen and Doctor Ding, were discussing medical cases. Seeing Manbao come in, he waved and asked, "What’s the matter? Has it become chaotic outside? Why have you come?"
"Our master brought us to visit Ji Hao," replied Manbao, scanning the medical notes on the table. She inquired, "Doctor Ji, how is he?"
Doctor Ji waved his hand dismissively, stood up, and said, "Never mind that, come to my room to discuss what’s happening outside and the situation at the pharmacy..."
As Doctor Ji spoke, he led the two away, to which Doctors Chen and Ding did not object; they nodded at Manbao and continued to ponder over the medical cases.
But Imperial Physician Fan watched Manbao intently for a while before seeing them off.
Once in Doctor Ji’s room, he changed the subject and asked Manbao in a low voice, "Ji Hao has a fever. It’s not severe, but it’s a persistent low-grade fever. Do you have any effective anti-inflammatory prescriptions?"
Manbao thought for a moment and suggested, "How about using mimosa?"
"We have tried it. It’s because of its use that he’s only having a low-grade fever now; otherwise, it would have been..."
Manbao inquired, "What dosage are you using?"
"We’ve been changing prescriptions, tried several already," said Doctor Ji as he noted down the prescriptions they had used these past few days for Manbao to see, then pointed to one, "Currently, this is the most effective one we’ve used, but it still hasn’t brought down the fever. The wound isn’t healing well, and besides the inflammation, he has severe internal injuries. We need to reduce the inflammation and nourish the blood. Do you have any ideas for a good prescription?"
He knew that Manbao had, in her hands or mind, many excellent prescriptions. Over the past few months as they discussed medicinal formulas, although she didn’t always recall them immediately, the treatment prescriptions she later provided were often exceptional.
In fact, if she hadn’t come to the Ji Family today, he would have needed to find an excuse to go out and consult with her.
He didn’t want to get her involved, but if it could save a life—or as it seemed now, more than one life—then Ji Hao’s death would not only affect those outside who would suffer alongside him, but also the Ji Family’s servants attending to him, who would likely meet with a dire fate.
So, he still had to ask Manbao.
Manbao fell into thought, flipping through the prescriptions she had memorized in her mind. She then looked over Doctor Ji’s prescriptions again, shook her head, and said, "I can’t think of anything at the moment. Take these prescriptions with me; I’ll look through books at home tonight and let you know once I have a result."
Doctor Ji said, "There’s no need to come in person; just hand the prescription to the shopkeeper, and he’ll find a way to bring it in."
After a pause, he added, "It must be done quickly; Ji Hao’s condition can’t wait."
Manbao consented, tucking the prescriptions into her bosom. She then began to talk about the significant gifts sent by the Ying Family.
Doctor Ji sighed, "The Ying Family is trying to make me take the blame in exchange for my grandson’s bright future."
Manbao questioned, "Are you willing to do that?"
Doctor Ji smacked her on the head, replying, "I’m not a fool. By sending my son into the Imperial Hospital, what good would come of it? You did the right thing by holding out. The people from the Ji Family will arrive soon, so let them discuss it among themselves."
