Chapter 666: Chapter 655: Empty Talk

Ji Hao was about to educate the three kids in detail about Spring Breeze Pavilion, but Wei Chen suddenly covered his mouth with his hand. With his back to the three, Wei Chen faced Ji Hao and made a throat-slitting gesture, warning him with his eyes like someone slaughtering a pig.

Ji Hao glared with wide eyes, "If you want to say something, at least let go of my mouth first."

Bai Shan looked at them suspiciously and then turned his head to exchange glances with his two friends.

The three not-so-honest and rather clever youngsters let out a meaningful "Oh—" and seemed to understand.

Then Manbao pulled Wei Chen away and looked at Ji Hao with suspicion, "So you forced a girl?"

"Nonsense, am I that kind of person?" Ji Hao retorted angrily: "With my family background, what kind of girl can I not have? Do I need to force anyone? I was set up, and my trip out this time was to seek revenge."

"So it wasn’t to treat your injuries?" Bai Shan frowned, stood up while pulling Manbao, and said, "That medicine was for stopping bleeding. You have both internal and external medications now. If anything else happens, just go out and find a doctor directly."

Seeing the three of them turn to leave, Ji Hao was stunned and asked, "Hey, what do you mean by turning your backs on me just like that?"

Wei Chen quickly held down Ji Hao who was trying to get up, "You stay down, I’ll go check."

Wei Ting and Jiao Yong also helped to calm Ji Hao down.

Wei Chen chased after them and stopped Bai Shan to ask, "What happened? Why are you leaving all of a sudden?"

Bai Shan said seriously, "My grandmother has taught me since I was young not to associate with desperadoes or those who do not cherish their lives. I could have ignored it if he risked his life for loyalty and righteousness, but he is doing it out of spite. Wounded like this and still thinking of fighting, such a person isn’t worth being friends with."

Manbao nodded repeatedly, "He will surely bring trouble to his friends in the future."

Bai Shan said, "A person who doesn’t even care about his own life, what else would he care about?"

Wei Chen was so shocked that he couldn’t speak, his mouth agape.

Bai Erlang, however, was used to their way of thinking and patted Wei Chen’s shoulder consolingly, "You’ll get used to it. Both of them are the treasured children of their families. When we were kids and played by the river, the worst I would get was a lecture from my grandmother when I got home. They would definitely get a beating, and then they would be forbidden from going near the water again. It wasn’t just the fear of them falling in; it was also the concern that they might catch a cold. They were only allowed to play by the river occasionally during summer and autumn, and Daji would watch them closely, making sure they didn’t go into deep water."

Wei Chen swallowed, nodding, still in shock, "I’m also the only child in my family. Why doesn’t my father cherish me like that?"

Manbao tilted her head, "Maybe it’s because your dad can still have more children?"

Wei Chen was choked up and exclaimed, "But you aren’t the only child in your family, either. Don’t you have a fourth brother? So, how many brothers do you have in total?"

"Six," Manbao thought for a moment, then looked at him sympathetically, "Does that mean your dad doesn’t really care about you?"

Wei Chen turned and walked away, too lazy to talk to them anymore, huffing indignantly.

The trio headed back to Book Collection Tower and quietly slipped to the back window, where they gently pushed the window and climbed in.

County Magistrate Tang, who had just concluded a friendly conversation with Mr.Wu, was heading to the Book Collection Tower and witnessed this scene.

He turned his head to look at Mr.Wu.

Noticing his gaze, Mr.Wu also turned and, with a knowing smile, asked, "What’s the matter, my lord?"

Knowing Mr.Wu hadn’t seen the event, County Magistrate Tang shook his head with a smile, "Nothing, just admiring the scenery of your academy."

He watched the three little thieves line up to climb through the window and then close it behind them, then chuckled to Mr.Wu, "Didn’t you say you have some books for me to see?"

Mr.Wu glanced in that direction as well, squinting slightly, but found nothing amiss, the view was blur.

After confirming there was nothing unusual, Mr.Wu nodded slightly and led County Magistrate Tang to Book Collection Tower.

Even if Tang County Magistrate was the magistrate, he was not allowed to take books from the Book Collection Tower, so he only read books there.

Carrying a book, he found the trio sitting together along the row of desks next to the wall. He paused to watch them for a moment, noticed they were whispering quietly while reading, then smiled and sauntered over.

As Bai Erlang saw the approaching County Magistrate Tang, he immediately closed his mouth.

Bai Shan and Manbao turned their heads and saw him, their expressions tensing slightly.

County Magistrate Tang, smiling, walked over to Bai Erlang and sat down next to him. One table, four people—it was a perfect fit.

County Magistrate Tang inhaled gently, catching the scent of medicine on Bai Shan and Manbao, and associating this with Ji Hao being carried away and their recent climb into the pavilion, he smilingly asked, "Was Ji Hao’s wound treated?"

His voice was low, not loud enough to disturb the students a few tables away, but just loud enough for the three at his table to hear.

Bai Erlang opened his innocent eyes and looked across at Manbao and Bai Shan. He wasn’t good at handling such situations. Quick, quick...

Fortunately, County Magistrate Tang wasn’t addressing him, but was steadily focusing on Manbao and Bai Shan.

The two youngsters subconsciously lowered their heads, considering nothing about this needed to be concealed.

Having been caught red-handed sneaking into Book Collection Tower, what was there to hide?

They nodded then.

Without changing his expression, County Magistrate Tang said, "Yesterday, several students from the academy got into a brawl at Spring Breeze Pavilion, which I had to handle. I thought they would behave themselves today. I did not expect they’d still be thinking about fighting. How is Ji Hao’s wound?"

Since County Magistrate Tang himself had handled the situation, both Manbao and Bai Shan did not think he was unaware of Ji Hao’s injuries, so they replied, "The wound opened up and bled again, but I applied some ointment and prescribed some oral medicine. If he doesn’t do anything foolish, it should heal."

County Magistrate Tang raised an eyebrow and asked, "You applied the medication? Why not let them do it?"

He nodded towards Bai Shan.

Manbao said, "There was some debris in the wound that needed careful cleaning. Since the cut was so long and a bit deep, what if they didn’t handle it well and pushed dirt deeper inside the body? So, it was better I did it."

She was more skilled at it after all, right?

Trying to suppress a smile, County Magistrate Tang lightly tapped the table and then asked with a slight chuckle, "Ji Hao must’ve screamed a lot, right? Considering the severity of his injury, how could the Ji Family allow him to come to school at such a time?"

"His family doesn’t know, of course. He didn’t dare to get medicine from the physicians either, for fear of his family finding out..." Manbao paused, raised her head to look at County Magistrate Tang, and after a moment, pursed her lips, "Lord Tang, if you want to know something, just ask me directly. Why try to trick me into talking?"
