Chapter 1206: Chapter 1185: Knowing
Manbao sent Qiuyue away and then sat beside the bed to ask Fu Wenyun, "Second Sister Fu, do you know about Lord Yue’s act of remonstrating by striking the pillar?"
Fu Wenyun had not yet received the news and looked up at Manbao in surprise, asking, "Really? I had no idea."
Manbao just sat across from her, watching her.
Unable to hide it, Fu Wenyun could only smile and say: "It wasn’t entirely for you, I was also venting for myself."
Manbao then said seriously, "I just went to see Lord Yue, his injury from the collision is not minor. I heard that an official tried to stop him, even tearing his sleeves."
Fu Wenyun’s expression became grave.
Manbao continued, "From what I’ve seen in history, those who could be ruthless to themselves succeeded eventually, no matter the final outcome, and they were equally ruthless to others."
She looked at Fu Wenyun and asked, "Second Sister Fu, was it you who came up with this idea for Lord Fu?"
Fu Wenyun had no regrets and nodded.
"Does Lord Yue know about it?"
Fu Wenyun’s gaze drifted and after a long while, she shook her head, "Father wouldn’t tell him that the idea came from me, and Father-in-law wouldn’t think of it either."
At this, Fu Wenyun smiled and leaning on the cushion said, "In this respect, he’s like Grandmother; in their hearts, they don’t really regard women highly."
Manbao let out a sigh of relief and smiled, "That’s good then. But Second Sister Fu, do you really still want to go back to the Yue family?
Fu Wenyun replied, "If not, where else can I go?"
Manbao said, "My elder sister also got divorced. Jin Law isn’t too rigid; if you want to divorce, it’s possible."
But Fu Wenyun slightly turned her head and looked at the child sleeping on the side of the bed, gesturing Manbao to look and said, "I fought like my life depended on it to give birth to him, and endured ten months of hardship from the pregnancy. How could I just abandon him and stop caring?"
Manbao also looked at the frail child on the side of the bed and fell silent for a moment.
Fu Wenyun continued, "If he hadn’t survived back then, getting a divorce wouldn’t have been hard. Even if I had to live a harder life in the future, I’d have an excuse to offer to my parents and could enjoy a life of freedom. But now, I can’t bear to do that."
She whispered, "As you know, the Yue family would never let me take the child with me, and neither can I. If I divorced, his life would be much harder in the future. My parents would not agree either. Criticizing the Yue family was already the most support they could give me."
Manbao knew her situation was different from her elder sister’s, so she sighed without persuading further.
Yet Fu Wenyun took it lightly and smiled, "You don’t have to worry about me. Didn’t you say that there are so many suffering people in this world, many without enough to eat, and even countless who experience separation by life and death? My life really isn’t all that hard."
"It’s just that I think Second Sister Fu has always been intelligent, and sometimes a hurt heart is more painful than a wounded body."
Fu Wenyun then laughed brightly, "I know, but I’ve long learned not to take such matters to heart. My mind is not so narrow."
Hearing this, Manbao smiled again, her eyes curving as she nodded, "Exactly, there are so many interesting things in the world. If one door doesn’t open, another window will, where you can see endless beautiful views."
Fu Wenyun couldn’t help but tap her nose and laugh, "You’re younger than me, yet you always like to play the teacher. Do you still have any candy?"
While rummaging in her pocket, Manbao had actually grabbed a handful of sweets from Keke to give to her, asking, "How old are you and still liking to eat candy?"
Fu Wenyun peeled a piece and popped it into her mouth, smiling as she said, "Everyone likes sweet things, no matter the age. Even my mother at her age enjoys candies. These past days I’ve been taking the bitter medicine you prescribed, and mother forbids me from eating anything too spicy, leaving a bitter taste in my mouth, which has been quite unpleasant."
The two of them steered the conversation away from the Yue Family and instead reminisced about some incidents from their childhood.
It was not until Qiuyue brought over some snacks and took the child, who kicked and woke up wanting milk, out to be fed, that Fu Wenyun asked Manbao, "The matter with your family and the Prince of Yizhou, you..."
Fu Wenyun pondered for a moment before voicing her concern, "Will you be in danger?"
Manbao replied, "Everyone says that under the Emperor’s nose, with everyone watching, they will not lay hands on us, so I’m rather relieved."
Fu Wenyun sighed and said, "Who could have imagined you had such a background? If it wasn’t for steward Xu inquiring at the gates of the Imperial Academy, I might have never found out."
Manbao said, "But after today, I’m afraid the whole world will know."
Fu Wenyun, thinking of her father-in-law’s remonstration by hitting the column, smiled and said, "Indeed, after today, the whole world will truly know."
The official’s remonstration by hitting the column is considered an act of determined protest, and although Yue Wei did not die in the end, the incident was big enough to spread throughout the entire capital.
Just like before, when Xiang Chao knocked on the complaint drum, the whole capital knew about it, but it’s unclear whether someone wanted to cover up the affair of Bai Shan and Zhou Man or protect them, or perhaps both, working together so that few of the city’s residents knew they too had filed a complaint.
The current rumor spreading outside is that the Prince of Yizhou, to maintain a private army, had ordered the killing of the Xiang Family and even used the flood as a cover-up for the past.
The orphans of the Xiang Family have been trying to assassinate the Prince of Yizhou for years without success. It was only after the sole legitimate heir was captured by the Prince of Yizhou that they became desperate enough to knock on the complaint drum.
Because of these discussions in the capital, some people feel sympathy for the Xiang Family’s plight, resulting in many officials wanting to execute the Xiang brothers on the charge of attempting to assassinate a member of the imperial family. However, the emperor and other court officials with opposing views suppressed and rebutted these demands.
Initially, only the incident involving the Xiang brothers spread among the residents of the capital, causing them to perceive the Prince of Yizhou as cruel. With Yue Wei’s remonstration by hitting the column, the whole matter began to be dug up, as it was indeed a topic worth discussing after meals.
Therefore, the entire sequence of events from the birthday feast was unearthed and spread from one person to ten, and then to a hundred.
This wasn’t a secret to begin with, as so many had attended the feast that day. Government officials of the third rank or higher, their families, friends, and relatives were all aware, and friends passed the news to friends, so basically everyone related to officials in the capital knew about it.
The Yue Family, however, knew very little about it, as they had recently arrived in the capital. Old Madam Yue hadn’t had time to establish her social connections when her daughter-in-law got busy with childbirth, which led to turmoil in the household.
Lord Yue, however, was aware.
But he knew only that the young master of the Bai Family who lodged a complaint at the Empress Dowager’s birthday feast was a student of the Imperial Academy, and the other woman was the renowned Doctor Zhou Junior, famous throughout the capital for curing the Empress’s ailment.
As Lord Yue, who usually did not involve himself in the affairs of the inner court, was unaware that the renowned Doctor Zhou Junior who had been treating his daughter-in-law was the one famous throughout the capital, until he awoke from his unconscious state.
Old Madam Yue, while wiping her tears away, could not help but repeatedly lament, "Why would my lord have such desperate thoughts, what would I have done if something had happened to you?"
Lord Yue gestured towards the water, too dizzy to speak.
As Old Madam Yue fed him water, she murmured, "It’s fortunate that the imperial physician and Doctor Zhou Junior both said you’ll be fine..."
Only then did Lord Yue speak up, "If the imperial physician has attended, why call for another doctor? If word gets out, would it not reflect poorly on us?"
Old Madam Yue quickly said, "She is Second Lady’s good friend and came to visit when she heard of your injury. Besides, she is no nobody; she is a famed divine healer in the capital, known even for treating nobility within the palace."
Lord Yue’s body stiffened, and with widened eyes, he asked, "Who did you say she is?"
