Chapter 68: Deciding On The Instructor
Raelis walked up the stairs, nearly falling over along the way.
He didn’t hear half the stuff that the receptionist had said, but he did get a key. It was for room number 3.
After a few minutes, he had made it to the very top of the dormitory.
As expected, it was much larger than the narrow hallways down on the first floor.
There was even a living room, two kitchens, and a couple of balconies scattered throughout.
Everything was accessible, but it was also empty. That was due to everyone being in class or hanging out with their friends.
Raelis approached room number 3, unlocked the door, stepped inside, and glanced around.
He thought his room downstairs was cozy, but the sight in front of him was a bit more than he could handle.
There was a personal balcony at the far end of the room. To the side was a massive bed, a walk-in closet, a kitchen, and a huge bathroom.
A large Magitek chandelier was hanging overhead, and he could control it with a simple switch beside the door.
Seeing all this, Raelis couldn’t help but get a headache.
But that was when he remembered one thing in particular.
My knives... I need to get down and... hm?
He spotted a familiar suitcase peeking out from below his bed.
Raelis walked toward it, took it out, and opened the suitcase.
To his surprise, the knives were inside, untouched.
He let out a relieved sigh and, without a second thought, he fell asleep on the spot.
.
.
.
"Ugh..." Raelis held his throbbing head and glanced around.
It was nighttime now, which meant that all dormitory goodies were off-limits until morning.
Still, at least he had fully recovered.
He walked over to the desk and sat down, glancing at the pamphlet.
It detailed all of the instructors who wanted to help him, numbering 13 in total.
Raelis knew a few of them, but since he didn’t want to be biased and he actually wanted to take this seriously, he began crossing out a few names.
Eventually, he was left with four names.
Kaylan Rusiko. A 5th Core earth mage. He taught herbalism and had a warm personality. But that was only on the outside.
On the inside, he was a battle-crazed junkie and someone who was very proficient with nearly every weapon in existence.
Raelis knew about this guy from the past since he was someone who died on the front lines only two years later.
The demons got him... and a couple other of others from this list.
Nevertheless, he brought his gaze onto his other options.
Evelyn Usagi. A 7th Circle swordswoman. She was one of the best swordsmen in the entire empire, and she was also strict.
Despite her strict personality, the training she put others through was nothing short of scary.
A shiver ran down Raelis’s spine as he drew a star beside her name.
Moving on to the next name.
Diego Aziz. 6th Circle swordsman and a 5th Core water mage. By far, he was one of the most competent of the bunch.
He seemed like a professional on the outside, but when one was in private with him, he was a total chatterbox.
But he was also known for never mentoring anyone personally.
Raelis drew a star beside his name and moved on to the last name he had circled.
Julian Evern, Eighth Seal Mystic of the Hollow Star Sigil Pathway.
Aside from that, he was known for his gravity-related bloodline.
But...
What does he want from me? Raelis tapped the table with his Magitek pen. He doesn’t have any reason to want to take me in aside from curiosity. Is that it? Is he just curious about my abilities?
Raelis really wasn’t sure how to proceed with this.
Unlike with the other two people whose names he had starred, Julian was more of a long-term investment.
If he could get on his good side and eventually help him uncover the one thing that he had been searching for all this time, then Raelis would likely be the prime candidate to get the Time Mysticism Pathway.
But the guy’s lazy. Raelis grumbled. I doubt he’d actually teach me anything.
Raelis leaned back in his chair and let out a sigh.
This was another one of those situations.
A smart choice, a safe choice, and a gamble.
The smart choice would be Diego Aziz.
The safe choice would be Evelyn Usagi.
And lastly, the gamble would be Julian.
He was also someone who had never taken part in any mentorships, or at least, none that Raelis could remember with his knowledge of a not-so-distant future.
"..."
"I’m really going to regret this, aren’t I?" Raelis muttered.
It was a really high risk, with an equally high reward.
He wouldn’t be getting any handouts either, which meant Raelis would have to earn his power, not just be given it through structured training.
So in the end, Raelis picked up the pen with a trembling hand and put a checkmark beside Julian’s name, then crossed out all the other names.
He had a reason for pulling something like this. If there isn’t one, then he’s an idiot, and I’m an idiot for thinking he’s not an idiot...
Having decided that, Raelis got back into bed and closed his eyes.
One minute, two minutes, ten minutes...
His eyes shot open.
"I can’t sleep."
Not after sleeping for nearly 12 hours.
Raelis glanced at the balcony, an idea coming to mind.
He walked into his closet, found some black clothes, and put them on
Then he tapped his earring, causing a black lotus mask to appear in his palm.
He tapped on a single petal and made it disappear back into the earring, which he put back on his ear after confirming that everything was working fine.
Raelis wasn’t an official member of the Black Lotus organization, but since he had the mask and knew how to locate the mission branches, he was basically a member.
A member who was bored and wanted something to do.
So with that, he stepped out onto the balcony and leaped down the building, slowly sneaking out of the academy.
