Chapter 74: Chapter 09: Negotiations (Second Update)
The curtains had already been drawn, and candles were lit in the room despite it being broad daylight.
The coffee table was the only piece of furniture in the room that remained intact. Even the sofa they were sitting on was missing a leg.
"Knock, knock, knock!" A guard’s voice came from outside: "Holy Knight! Holy Knight! What’s going on, do you need our help?"
"No, the Holy Knight is just... training!" Dora shouted.
"Training? Training in a room?"
"Or how else would he be a Holy Knight?" Another voice muttered, "He must be different, right?"
"True enough. Let’s go, it’s fine."
"Sorry to disturb you, Holy Knight!"
The chatting guards from the Lion King Palace dispersed.
Silence, prolonged silence.
Jones, in armor, held his breath, standing obediently to the side, sweating profusely. *He had never felt such pressure before. After all, whether it was the Lich, Angel, or Succubus in the room, any of them could easily kill him with one hand. The worst part was they might start fighting again; they had already fought once.*
Gray turned to Catherine and asked, "Shouldn’t we take this chance to subdue the demon? This is a great opportunity to demonstrate knightly virtue and our teachings!"
"We can’t do that, Gray," Catherine said helplessly, "There’s a truce between Heaven and Hell. I can’t take action unless she breaks the contract. If I act, I would be the one violating the contract."
Vivian sat quietly, looking at Gray pitifully, innocent and aggrieved.
*Unfortunately, the Succubus’s charm didn’t work on the Lich. Or more precisely, the Lich couldn’t comprehend such charm.*
Gray righteously said, "Why establish such a contract? Isn’t eradicating evil the task given to us by the holy spirit? We should fight evil forces to the end, not make contracts with them!"
"Yes, but the premise is being able to eliminate it. We used to think like you, then we fought for tens of thousands of years," Catherine shrugged, "Even Angels need a break, right? You must allow us... a little breather."
"But we’ve been taking a break for a long time already!" Gray shouted in confusion.
Vivian suddenly burst out laughing.
Instantly, everyone’s gaze turned to her.
Vivian quickly collected herself and continued to look pitiful.
Catherine took a deep breath and said, "There’s a truce agreement between Angels and Demons. Neither of us can directly interfere in human affairs. Under normal circumstances, we can’t even harm any human directly. Also, there is an agreement between us and the Lich Council. It’s a tripartite agreement. As long as the Lich hasn’t done anything to harm us, we can’t take action against them. So, even if she stays here, she won’t harm you."
"But, am I supposed to promote knightly virtues with a demon by my side?"
*Vivian gently said, "You can think of it this way. There’s a lost little Succubus who grew up in the abyss and doesn’t even know what goodness is. Now she’s in front of you. This is a chance given by the holy spirit, a chance for her. Maybe you can... reform her? Yes, there’s a Succubus needing your reform; does that sound more acceptable?"*
"Uh..."
"Does the Bible say a Lich can’t become a Holy Knight?"
"No."
"Exactly, so you became a Holy Knight. Does the Bible say a demon can’t become a follower of the Holy Sect?
"No, it doesn’t."
"So, you understand," Vivian said, looking at Gray, "It’s truly inspiring for a Lich to embrace the light, showing the greatness of the holy spirit. And if a demon embraces the light, it’s even more so. Now, the opportunity is right in front of you! Do you want to be the greatest Holy Knight in history?"
"It kind of makes sense," Gray hesitated.
Catherine said nothing, but the Black Cat intervened.
The Black Cat flipped open Gray’s visor and jumped out of his armor, fur bristling, "You’re twisting words! Gray truly believes in the holy spirit, but you! You have ulterior motives!"
"Oh, Ghost Cat," Vivian smiled sweetly at the Black Cat, "I must remind you, we demons have agreements with Angels and Liches, but with ghosts... Ghosts are too lowly to even have an agreement with us."
"Uh... hahahaha," the Black Cat quickly changed its tone, "I misspoke, I misspoke. Gray, she makes a lot of sense, really! I’m convinced! If a Lich can become a Holy Knight, demons can certainly become followers of the Holy Sect! It’s flawless! A true Holy Knight should aim to reform demons..."
The voice was abruptly cut off because the Black Cat suddenly felt a chill behind it. Turning around, it saw Catherine looking at it coldly.
"Black Cat, there’s no agreement between Angels and ghosts either," Catherine said with a smile.
In an instant, the Black Cat was stunned.
*This is a death sentence! A real death sentence!* Its gaze shifted between Catherine and Vivian, back and forth, back and forth, ultimately lowering its head in resignation, tucking its tail, and scurrying back into Gray’s armor, closing the visor, and pleading in a pitiful voice, "I’m just a poor ghost, I’m out of my mind! Whatever I said, just pretend I didn’t say it, okay?"
Jones gulped nervously on the side, keeping his head low.
*This was his worst fear. Standing next to an Angel and a demon, no matter what you did, you would offend one of them. The worst part was that both were powerful and could easily kill you with one hand.*
Gray looked at Catherine.
Reluctantly, Catherine sighed and said, "My suggestion is to let her stay. We can’t drive her away anyway. It’s better to keep your enemy where you can see them than not know where they are, right?"
"Then can I reform her?"
"Uh..." Catherine hesitated, swallowing hard: "If you can, I’d be proud of you. Truly. But I must remind you, no demon has ever been reformed."
"And no Lich has ever become a Holy Knight. Do you see the connection?" Vivian quietly added, "You’re the first Lich to be reformed, and I might be the first Succubus to be reformed. That way, you would become the greatest Holy Knight in history."
Gray thought about it and said solemnly to Vivian, "I can accept you staying here, but you must promise not to harm anyone, just like them. As vampires, they only drink pig’s blood now."
He pointed at Jones and Dora as he spoke.
Jones took a step back in fear, gathering his composure before nodding and shouting, "Yes! We only drink pig’s blood now! Hahahaha! We only drink pig’s blood! Hahahaha! Really, pig’s blood is so delicious!"
As he laughed, tears started to fall, his voice filled with sorrow.
"Deal! I won’t even drink pig’s blood!" Vivian extended her hand.
"Alright, deal!" Gray extended his hand as well.
They shook hands over the coffee table, then each returned to their seat.
Gray continued, "And, starting tonight, you will participate in Catherine’s holy faith education with me and attend church service with me every week."
"Uh... you’re joking, right?" Vivian was stunned.
"No, I’m serious," Gray said solemnly, "I know your motives aren’t pure, you still want to tempt me. This is a contest; you want to tempt me into falling, and I want to reform you. Fair competition. But if you refuse to receive holy education nightly, and refuse to attend church services, then I will give up on reforming you. I won’t listen to a word you say."
"I’m a demon, and you want me to attend church services?" Vivian couldn’t help but laugh.
However, Gray didn’t find it funny.
"Do you still think I’m joking?" Gray asked seriously, "I’m a Lich, and here we have two vampires and a Ghost Cat. We all attend church services."
Vivian’s smile slowly faded as she glanced at Jones and Dora.
"Yes, we... we attend church services weekly. We even pray before drinking pig’s blood!" Jones choked, already in a self-abandoned attitude.
Vivian’s expression stiffened.
The Black Cat peeked out and added, "I also attend church services weekly! The Bone Horse attends too!" It quickly shrank back.
"What... is this?" Vivian blurted out, slowly straightening her back, eyes wide in disbelief, looking at the strange creatures before her: "A Lich’s Guardian Angel, a Lich Holy Knight, vampires drinking pig’s blood and praying, ghosts attending services... Zeda didn’t tell me any of this at the start."
She couldn’t recover for a long time and could only seek help from the seemingly normal Catherine, "Can you... say something?"
"What do you think of my idea?" Gray also asked.
Hesitating for a long time, Catherine could only awkwardly say, "I think the idea... isn’t bad!"
Instantly, Gray’s confidence grew stronger.
Vivian was shocked.
A room full of strange beings was staring at her expressionlessly. Of course, Jones’s eyes were filled with tears.
"So, do you want to join our warm family?" Gray asked righteously.
"Give me a few seconds to think," Vivian extended a hand, lowered her head, and took deep breaths.
"Take as long as you need. As long as you agree, I’ll let you stay by my side. Then we’ll reform you together with the power of love."
Finally, Vivian took a deep breath, looked up, and gritted her teeth, "Alright! I agree! To complete my mission, the Demon Lord will forgive me!"
"Deal!"
They shook hands again over the coffee table.
Well, this might be the most absurd agreement ever made between a demon and any other creatures.
