Chapter 65: Chapter 01: Heading to the Lion King City
Holy Calendar 10753, December.
Although the southern climate of the continent is mild, this year, the Isaac Kingdom still saw snow. Of course, it was just a light dusting.
All the trees were covered in a thin layer of white, with tiny crystals sparkling under the sunlight.
The brook didn’t freeze and continued flowing.
Deer frolicked in the forest.
The entire world seemed to have put on a new disguise.
This made Gray unusually excited. Because there was no snow underground, such a sight was something he had only ever read about in books.
Of course, compared to a few months ago, he was already much more restrained. He simply watched quietly, without blinking.
There was no rain underground either. The first time it rained, he stood under the rain and stared up at the sky, from the moment the downpour began until it ended. He stood there for a full three hours.
"It’s really fascinating. Water falls from the sky. Just like a beaker."
"Why did you suddenly mention beakers?" the Black Cat asked.
"In heated beakers, steam overflows, then condenses when it cools, turning back into water. I’ve encountered this scenario many times during experiments. But our world isn’t being heated, at least not like a beaker. Yet the droplets falling from the sky are countless times more extensive than a beaker’s capacity." Gray remarked softly, "Perhaps when an experiment reaches a certain magnitude, all the things we initially imagined change completely."
"So, have you gained any new insights again?" The Black Cat said expressionlessly, "You’ve been having far too many insights lately, and I’m getting tired of hearing them."
"No, not really."
You ask me why no one stopped him from standing in the rain for three hours? Well, someone did. Shelley came with an umbrella and asked if he wanted to come indoors. But that was it. Surely you don’t think a little rain could make a Holy Knight sick, right?
Since the battle of the White City, the entire White City’s tolerance toward Gray had become almost unimaginable. Whatever the Holy Knight said was right. Even if it was wrong, it was still right.
This left the Black Cat feeling rather helpless, especially since even Eileen adopted a hands-off approach. She attended to everything like a newlywed wife, smiling all the while.
Wait, why did I use the phrase "newlywed wife"?
Well, ever since the battle at the White City, there had been a certain light in Eileen’s eyes whenever she looked at Gray. This was quite troublesome, wasn’t it?
The Church only permitted a monogamous marital system. Although most nobles had additional lovers, the Church wouldn’t punish them for it. In some more liberal regions, such as Lion King City, having a lover could even be openly acknowledged. They didn’t see anything wrong with it.
Of course, the Church still refused to recognize children born out of wedlock. This was why, when Jones appeared as an illegitimate child, the Church never recognized his inheritance rights. Although the nobles had their own methods, for example, the King’s authority included a clause: "The King may grant legitimate inheritance rights to an illegitimate child." This was precisely the clause Baird VI utilized back then.
Although, before that, it had practically been the King’s revenue-generating decree. Some families with only illegitimate children would have to present the King with a satisfyingly generous gift in order to gain legitimate recognition for their successors. Under normal circumstances, this would be a hefty sum, allowing the King to grant them the legitimacy they sought.
But that was mainly for ordinary nobles. Gray, on the other hand, was a Holy Knight. A Holy Knight had to fully adhere to the Church’s secular norms, not just outwardly but in substance as well.
This was a significant problem. If Eileen was the "newlywed wife," then what about Shelley?
The Black Cat was starting to worry faintly: "So, how do you plan to handle your relationship with Eileen and Shelley?"
"Shelley is my wife, isn’t she?"
"You aren’t married yet."
"We will be after we get married."
"By the way, are you really planning to marry her? Alright, that question doesn’t seem so problematic for now. What about Eileen?"
"She’s my liege lord, the one I swore an oath to."
"Oh, really? I don’t think she sees it that way." With a slow sigh, the Black Cat continued, "Given that the Pope has trained four Holy Knights, and I’ve trained one, I consider myself one-fourth as great as the Pope. So I cannot allow this calamity to unfold. I must prevent myself from becoming the laughingstock of the continent, even if nobody knows who I am yet."
"What did you just say?" Gray asked.
"Oh, you zoned out again. I didn’t say anything." The Black Cat responded with a sly smile.
Riding on horseback, Gray had already reached a pine tree on the side of the road, tilting his head up and gazing at it blankly.
It was a massive pine tree, towering nearly a hundred meters tall, as if it reached the heavens. At this moment, it was lightly dusted with a layer of snow.
"So beautiful, isn’t it?" Gray marveled.
"Thank goodness, you still know how to appreciate beauty." The Black Cat said helplessly.
"It seems you really like the snow." Eileen, also on horseback, approached Gray and spoke softly, "If that’s the case, why don’t we stop and rest for a day? After all, as long as we reach Lion King City by the end of the month, there’s no rush."
"Refuse her!" The Black Cat said firmly.
Gray quickly replied, "No... no need. I’ll just take in the sights along the way. It’s not particularly unique."
"Really? I thought you liked it very much. I love snow too—except for the cold."
Eileen smiled and rode off, followed by a long procession. Gray’s Silver Moon Flag and Eileen’s Rosemary Flag, along with the Gruglu family’s Eight-Colored Flag, formed a perfect triangle, led by the Rosemary Banner, slowly advancing.
