Chapter 160 - 40: Face to Face (3)

Chapter 160: Chapter 40: Face to Face (3)

That night, small snowflakes began to fall in Lion King City, and there were pitifully few people on the streets.

In a small alley, Morca was huddled against the wall that had a fireplace on the other side, trembling under a blanket. Pao Pao was right beside him, also shivering from the cold, and he sneezed heavily.

"Why don’t we rent a house? Didn’t we sell a lot of books today?"

"No rental," Morca said through chattering teeth, his face turning blue from the cold, "I want to save up to buy back the house. Once I’ve sold all the books, the house will be mine again!"

"But nobody’s buying them, right?"

"Didn’t we sell a lot today? Maybe this book will become popular tomorrow?"

"But it was just that group of people. After they left, there’s been no one else interested."

"It’s okay, another group will come soon to buy them." Morca clutched the blanket stubbornly.

A figure in a black cloak walked into the alley, followed by several empty carriages meant for transporting goods.

Just as Morca thought the person was merely passing through, the figure suddenly stopped and reached for a book from the pile, picking up "Lich Knight."

Morca sprang into action, hurriedly throwing off the blanket and running over with a businesslike smile.

"Sir, this novel is very good!"

The cloaked person wore a hood pulled down low, and in the dim light, even his face wasn’t visible. Only his long, waist-length white beard and wrinkled hands could be seen.

"Are you selling your books?" a deep, aged voice asked.

"Selling! Of course selling!" Morca said, overjoyed.

"I mean, all of them."

"Uh... I’m not sure I understand your meaning."

"I mean I want to buy all your books."

Morca was instantly stunned, and Pao Pao’s mouth dropped open in shock beside him.

"Are you serious?"

"Of course."

"Then... I’ll count how many there are for you now. They’re five hundred copper coins each. If you buy them all, I can give you a discount!"

"No need, I’m in a hurry," the cloaked figure said, pulling out a large bag from his cloak. Reaching in, he grabbed a handful of gold coins.

Morca and Pao Pao were nearly dumbfounded. Such a large bag... all filled with gold coins? How many could there be!

Holding the gold coins, the cloaked figure didn’t give them to Morca but instead placed them in the pocket of the coachman behind him. Then he handed them a note.

"Please help me deliver the books to this location."

"This... is quite far. We’ll need to leave Isaac."

"Yes, so I’m giving you more money."

"Thank you, thank you!" The coachmen thanked him profusely.

Turning to face him, the cloaked figure threw the remaining gold coins before Morca, "These are for the books. No more, no less. Additionally, I have one small request: you cannot tell anyone who bought these books or where they are being sent. Not even a hint."

Morca, smiling widely at the large bag of gold coins, said, "Of course, this request is very reasonable! It’s a simple task, and I’m very happy to do it! Besides, I don’t even know!"

"Remember your words. If you break the promise, you will suffer severe punishment." The cloaked figure waved his hand, signaling the coachmen to load the books onto the carriages.

...

"If Holy Knight Gray was truly a Lich, why would the Holy Spirit allow him to become a Holy Knight?"

"That question can only be answered by the Holy Spirit."

"Have we really been up against a Lich all along? It’s so... absurd!"

The cardinals in the church discussed anxiously.

"Has the author been found yet?"

"Not yet, sir, they have just set out."

"Make them hurry!"

"Yes... Yes!" the Temple Knight at the door answered.

The Holy Father knelt before the statue, praying silently.

In the firelight, the statue’s face flickered as if experiencing a struggle of pain.

...

Lion King Palace.

On the balcony, Gray and Shelley held hands and quietly admired the snow.

Snowflakes drifted down from the sky, shimmering like floating stars in the firelight. Unfortunately, the firelight only illuminated the small space in front of the balcony, with the distance remaining in darkness.

...

A group of cloaked figures rushed into the alley, and with the sound of "swish swish swish," a dozen longswords were unsheathed, pointing at Morca, who was celebrating with his gold coins.

Residents watching from the second-floor windows quickly pulled their heads back in fear.

"Damn it! What are you doing? I just sold the books and you’re here to rob me? That was fast!" Morca exclaimed in shock.

Pao Pao hugged Morca tightly in fear.

Circularly inspecting the alley, the leader of the cloaked figures removed his hood, revealing a bald, fat face glowering at Morca: "Where are your books?"

This was the priest who reported to the Holy Father.

"Are you the one who bought the books today?" Morca immediately recognized him. He didn’t have many customers, making them easy to remember.

"I’m asking you where your books are."

"Sold out."

"Sold out so quickly?"

"I kept one for myself as a souvenir. If you still want it, I can..." Morca pulled out the last copy of "Lich Knight" from behind him.

The bald priest took it, glanced over a couple of pages, and then tossed it at Morca’s face: "Your books weren’t selling, right?"

"Hey hey hey, you’re wrong to say that. I’m a very popular author. You can rob me, but you can’t say my books don’t sell!"

Ignoring further debate, the bald priest turned his face and waved: "Take him back!"

"Yes!" Three Temple Knights immediately sheathed their longswords and approached Morca.

"Wait wait! Where are you taking me? Aren’t you robbing money? Or are you kidnapping me?"

*Morca continued to struggle, but it was to no avail. After all, they were up against a dozen Temple Knights.* *While being dragged away, he shouted to Pao Pao,* "Take care of the money! When I come back, we’ll buy the house!"

"Okay... okay." Pao Pao stammered, clinging to the large bag of gold coins.

...

Morca was shoved heavily to the ground.

*Struggling, he sat up and knelt, then looked around in panic at the cardinals staring him down, and the Holy Father kneeling in prayer before the statue.*

"Who are you?"

The cardinals did not seem interested in answering his question, throwing a copy of "Lich Knight" at Morca.

"Is this your book?"

"Yes... yes."

"Did Holy Knight Gray ask you to write it?"

"Yes."

"Did he admit he’s a Lich?"

"No, who said he’s a Lich? My book is just so good that you all thought he really is a Lich. No, actually, he just wanted to read a story about a Lich Knight. Isn’t the story great?"

*Morca grinned as he looked around at the cardinals, who stared at him expressionlessly.*

...

The wheels of the carriages turned with a "clatter clatter."

On a snowy night, six fully loaded carriages carrying copies of "Lich Knight," along with eleven coachmen, drove down the long street, leaving Lion King City.

...

"Who bought your books?" one of the cardinals asked.

"I don’t know." Morca shrugged: "You wouldn’t tell someone who you are when buying books, right?"

"No, I usually let them know I’m a cardinal. But that’s not the point. We want more books, do you have them?"

"No."

Turning his face, the cardinal said to someone beside him: "Make arrangements for a reprint. Print a million copies."

"You’re going to pay me royalties?" Morca asked, overjoyed.

"Sorry, no one intends to pay you royalties. This person is useless now, take him away."

Immediately, three Temple Knights approached Morca.

*Morca was dumbfounded, struggling and shouting, "No— You can’t do this! This is wrong; this is piracy! Piracy causes people to be damned! Causes brainless children to be born!* *I thought your Church was just corrupt, but I didn’t expect you to be pirates too! Shame on you! This is the root cause of the downfall of the Church, you understand! You can’t do this! Don’t do this—!*"

However, no one planned to listen to him. Three Temple Knights carried him out directly.

...

Pas’s men filled the entire alley.

"It’s not robbery?"

"No." Pao Pao shook his head: "They didn’t take the gold coins."

"So many gold coins... how many books did you sell?" Pas bent down, grabbed a handful of gold coins, and looked at them before putting them back.

The nearby resident who reported said, "I saw them draw swords. Since it wasn’t a robbery, it must have been a kidnapping. They took someone away."

"A ransom is required for a kidnapping, but all possible ransom is here. The kidnapped person has no home aside from these coins now."

"That, I don’t know."

"Little one, come with us first." Pas squeezed Pao Pao’s face and said, "With so much money, guarding it here is dangerous."

Turning his face, he said to his men, "Take the money away."

"Yes!" A soldier came over, reached to move the bag of gold: "Damn it! It’s so heavy! Bring another person to help! No, bring three more people!"

Pao Pao stood aside, watching as four soldiers, out of breath, managed to lift the gold coins.

Pas looked around and picked up the last copy of "Lich Knight" that had fallen to the ground.

"Is this the book you sold?"

Just then, Morca came limping back, his face bruised, tears streaming down his face.

"From today on, I will be an arch-enemy of the evil pirating Church! Hey, why are there so many people?"

"Morca!" Pao Pao cheered, running over and hugging him tightly.

"Is this the kidnapped person?" Pas scrutinized Morca: "Why is he back?"

...

At Pearce Cathedral, the Holy Father finally released his praying hands and slowly opened his eyes.

The cardinals standing nearby quickly reached out to assist him. Those scattered around the sanctuary also quickly gathered around.

"Holy Father, did the Holy Spirit give us an answer?"

After a brief silence, the Holy Father said softly, "Yes."

...

"Gray."

"Hmm?"

On the balcony of Lion King Palace, Shelley suddenly smiled and said, "I want to tell you that even if you were a Lich, I would still like you."

Gray clenched Shelley’s hand tighter, remaining silent.

Shelley, looking at the snow, continued with a bright smile, "I want to tell you, whatever you are, whatever you do, I will always, always support and like you. Even if the whole world opposes you, I will stand by your side. Although I may not be able to do much... I hope at least you won’t be lonely."

"I understand," Gray replied softly.
