Chapter 142: Chapter 26: Between Black and White (4)_2

"I thought you would either approve or oppose."

"Shall we change the vote?"

"No, I don’t want to change it. Go on."

"Then, one vote to approve, two votes to oppose, sixteen abstentions. According to the council’s rules, the resolution is rejected."

...

Belinda, wearing a mask, slowly opened her eyes and said softly, "Gray, I’m sorry, but your resolution has been rejected by the Holy Spirits. Now, we have to take her away."

Vivian was about to stand up, but Gray was quicker. He blocked Vivian, protecting her behind him.

"Gray..."

"I’m sorry, even if it is the decision of the Holy Spirits, I cannot comply," Gray said firmly, looking at Belinda with righteous indignation, "According to the knight’s oath, I cannot stand by and watch my companion, who saved me, be taken into custody. As a knight, I am duty-bound to fight for this."

His hand was already on the hilt of his sword.

Abod helplessly held his forehead.

*This should have been expected, the stubborn Lich Knight, not knowing the meaning of compromise. An oath taken must be fulfilled.*

"Gray," Belinda said softly, "I understand your feelings, but... you cannot stop us. Even at your peak, you posed no threat to us, let alone now, when you have almost no magic power. So, please, step aside. We do not want to harm a knight, nor do we wish to add the crime of assaulting the tribunal to a righteous and kind knight. This will only harm you."

"Gray, you can’t stop them. Give up," Vivian choked, trying to persuade him softly, "I’m already very happy, truly. So very happy. Just don’t forget me, that’s enough."

"Not only will I not forget you, but I will also keep you here." Gray still blocked Vivian, standing firmly.

"Gray, what you’re doing is pointless."

Gray stood unmoved.

"Gray, don’t force us. This benefits no one."

Gray still did not move, standing like a statue.

The two sides were at a stalemate.

Vivian stood quietly behind him.

Belinda sighed softly, "We have no choice, take action."

However, no one moved. The angels only hovered quietly in the air. Their eyes shifted between Gray and Belinda.

Everyone was silent for a long, long time, until the atmosphere became so oppressive that Vivian could hardly breathe.

"What are you waiting for! End this, now!" Belinda commanded.

"I’ll do it, I’ll try not to hurt him."

Finally, one angel moved, stepping forward.

It was Abod.

Looking at Abod, Gray said softly, "I thought in the Holy Camp, we only discuss right and wrong, but in the end, it is decided by power."

"Whether it’s holy or dark, just or evil, ultimately, it is decided by power."

"Then what is the difference between holy faith and dark faith?"

"I don’t know."

This answer was enough to make the angels feel ashamed. However, that was the reality.

Gray slowly drew his sword, "So, if I were a Lich over ten thousand years old, would things be different?"

"Yes," Abod replied, summoning his light sword.

"I understand. Tenidas—!"

Tenidas, who had been crouching in the corner with the Black Cat, quickly ran to Gray’s side.

Gray stepped onto the stirrup, climbing onto the horse with difficulty.

"Gray... there’s no need," Vivian grasped Gray’s hand.

"This is something I must do, or I would be betraying my faith." Gray let go of Vivian’s hand.

Tenidas slowly retreated, creating distance.

"Charge—!"

"Sss—!"

With a heart-wrenching cry, Tenidas charged forward like an arrow released from a bow. Gray raised his longsword, hacking at Abod with all his might.

Perhaps Gray never imagined his sword would be directed at an angel.

However, this was something he had to face. The world was far more cruel than he had imagined. Good intentions could change some people, but not the majority.

Abod adjusted his posture slightly, raising one hand, stopping the charge forcefully. Gray, along with Tenidas, was thrown out violently, dragged along the ground for a long distance until they hit a tree trunk, finally stopping.

"Do you want power?" a voice asked in his mind.

Everyone watched silently.

Abod was about to move toward Vivian.

However, Gray stood up again, getting back on the horse. Still, another charge. Abod, too, lightly raised a hand, sweeping him off the horse.

The gap in power was despairingly vast; he couldn’t even get close to Abod.

"Do you want power?"

He stood up again, riding the horse, continuing to charge. Again and again, repeatedly.

"That fool, does he want to break all the bones in his body?" the Black Cat muttered, stunned.

"Gray! Stop—!" Vivian was crying and shouting, wiping away tears.

"How many more times will you try!" Abod roared in frustration.

"I don’t know... I don’t know how many times I have to try. I don’t know how many times... until I no longer feel guilty."

The angels one by one closed their eyes, not wanting to watch anymore. This must have been the most peculiar capture operation they had ever experienced.

"Do you want power?" the voice in his mind repeatedly asked him.

"You taught me this, everything I’m doing, you taught me..."

Over and over, he fell then stood up again, crying the same slogan. He seemed weak, yet had seemingly endless strength.

The Lich and the Bone Horse, stubborn to an unbelievable extent.

Finally, after losing count of how many times he’d been knocked off the horse, he struggled, convulsed, but couldn’t get up. He could only stare blankly at the sky.

Full of stars.

Even the strongest will, ultimately, loses to power.

"Gray—" Vivian rushed to his side, holding him tightly.

"I can’t do it anymore! Consider this my defiance, punish me!" Abod dropped his light sword, flapping his wings, leaving without looking back, disappearing into the pitch-dark sky.

The angels all hung their heads.

"Who will go and capture Vivian, he can no longer resist!" Belinda shouted.

However, no one moved; all the angels just hovered quietly.

"Didn’t you hear my order?" Belinda yelled.

Vivian held Gray tightly.

"Do you want power?"

Gray stared blankly at Belinda.

"Since none of you are willing, then I will do it myself. Guarding the law is the duty of an Archangel." Belinda revealed her light sword, descending to the ground, walking towards Gray step by step.

Vivian held Gray tightly, trembling, sobbing.

Gray convulsed continuously, watching Belinda approach, watching the light sword in her hand. His consciousness was gradually blurring.

"Do you want power?" the voice in his mind persisted, "This might be your last chance. Soon, you will lose consciousness. And they will take Vivian away. Will you resist, or accept your fate?"

"What price must I pay?" Gray finally replied.

"I am the Demon Lord, the master of demons."

"I know."

"But you don’t have to pay any price. You can use my power to do whatever you want, including rescuing your teammate, fulfilling your justice, saving Vivian, and changing all the injustices in this world that you see. Your existence is the greatest reward for me. Will you accept?"

"I accept," Gray answered softly.
