Chapter 139: Chapter 24: Between Black and White (2) (Second Update)
The atmosphere was getting a bit awkward.
Vivian blinked her eyes and looked at Gray, stammering, and after a long while, she finally said, "You... you’re saying ’thank you’ to me?"
"Yes," Gray replied softly.
"All right, I get it. You mean a Holy Knight won’t repay a favor to a demon, right? I get it. I wasn’t asking for a favor from you either."
"But I was only saying thank you, nothing else."
"You don’t have to worry about me asking you to repay a favor. Let’s be honest, the Demon Lord hopes your existence can divide the church, creating two church factions with different principles on this continent. So... I have to protect your holy faith and ensure your identity is not exposed. It’s my mission, I would never ask you to repay a favor."
"But I was only saying thank you."
"Don’t you get it?" Vivian shouted, "I’m telling you that you don’t even need to say thank you to me!"
"But I still feel I should thank you," Gray looked at the agitated Vivian and said in a soft voice.
Suddenly, as if it was the straw that broke the camel’s back, Vivian’s nose twitched, her eyes turned red, and tears started to fall.
The black cat was dumbfounded.
She curled up on the ground like an ordinary little girl, covered her face with her hands, and began to sob.
"What’s wrong?" Gray asked softly.
"Don’t ask!"
"What’s wrong?" Gray asked again.
"I told you not to ask!" Vivian cried, "And don’t touch me!"
"Okay," Gray reluctantly pulled back the hand he had extended and stood quietly, watching as Vivian crouched on the ground, sobbing incessantly.
In the sunset, the wind blew gently as Vivian repeatedly wiped away her tears, mumbling softly, "Bastard, all bastards, bastard..."
Gray put down the black cat he was holding, stretched his neck, and looked cautiously.
"Really... you can’t tell me? You even told me the Demon Lord’s plan."
"Aren’t you mad at me? The Demon Lord’s plan," Vivian asked, choking up.
"Why would I be mad at you? You were just trying to complete your mission."
"And you still thank me?"
"Because you saved me."
With a loud "wah," Vivian lunged at Gray, knocking the already shaky Gray to the ground. Hugging Gray, she cried even harder.
The black cat, watching from the side, was terrified and began to estimate how many bones Gray might have broken from the impact.
"I am homeless now," Vivian sobbed, "I can’t go back to the Abyss, never again. The Demon Lord said he would protect me if I violated the agreement, but... but I must go back to the Abyss myself. I can’t go back. They won’t come out to save me. Demons and angels are the same! Liars! All liars! It wasn’t just a couple of angels chasing me, the entire Angel Judgment Team came! Dozens of angels! They will soon find me! I’m finished!"
"If they catch you... what will happen?"
"I will be sent to the Judgement Court, most likely to be executed, completely destroyed... not even my soul will remain. I don’t want to die... don’t want to die..."
Gray hugged Vivian tightly and whispered, "Don’t worry, I will save you."
"You can’t save me..."
"If I can’t save you, does that mean I shouldn’t try?"
Vivian lifted her head, teary eyes looking at Gray, "You silly Lich, you can barely protect yourself, and you still want to save me? Four Guardian Angels are searching for you too..."
"Then... let’s face it together,"
Vivian smiled bitterly, "A cornered Succubus and a Holy Knight braving dangers together? It sounds like a bad drama."
"A Holy Knight civil war, getting injured by his own comrades, but saved by a Succubus—doesn’t that also sound like a bad drama?"
"Do you still hold your holy faith?"
"I do."
"The Holy Spirit didn’t come to save you, and the church treated you like this, so why hold on to it?"
Touching Vivian’s head, Gray softly said, "Faith is personal. Why should we abandon our faith because of others’ mistakes? I never thought holding on to faith was for receiving something. I hold on to faith because I believe it is right."
"Can I hold on to faith with you?" Vivian asked, wiping her tears.
"Do you want to accept holy faith?"
"If... I mean if," Vivian said, sobbing, "if I can become a saint like you, maybe the Angel Judgment Team will spare me..."
Gray steadied Vivian and sat up himself, bowing his head and praying devoutly, "My Lord, your Holy Knight Gray, prays to you sincerely. I wish to absolve all the sins committed by Succubus Vivian, and I will protect her until she becomes a saint. Although... although my authority might not be enough to grant absolution, I am willing to do this. If you must judge someone, please let me bear the punishment she deserves."
After finishing his prayer, Gray drew a cross devoutly on his chest.
Vivian stared at Gray blankly, "You might... die."
"I know, a Lich fears no death, and a Knight fears no sacrifice. And I am both."
With a loud "wah," Vivian hugged Gray and cried even harder.
"What’s wrong now?"
"You’re so good to me; I’m not used to it..."
"You’ll get used to it."
"But I don’t want to get used to it..."
Vivian cried so much that she almost couldn’t breathe.
The black cat squatted nearby and sighed helplessly.
...
The wind blew gently, and the leaves in the forest rustled.
As night fell, Gray lit a fire in the cave, skewering the freshly caught fish with sticks and roasting them. Vivian curled up nearby, hugging her knees and keeping her head down.
"Do you want some fish?" Gray asked Vivian.
"Hey! That’s my fish! I haven’t had fish in a long time!" the black cat immediately protested.
"I’ll roast some more for you later. There are plenty, you can’t eat them all."
The black cat glared at Gray, looking very dissatisfied.
"I don’t eat. Succubi don’t need to eat these things," Vivian replied softly.
Gray held the roasted fish and urged again, "Maybe eating something will make you feel better. After all, the black cat always feels good after eating."
"I don’t want to eat," Vivian pouted, "I need to maintain my figure."
"Actually, I envy you all for being able to eat. Everyone talks about flavors, but there’s no ’taste’ in my magic perception. I also can’t eat."
Looking at Gray, Vivian finally extended a hand, "Alright, you poor thing, I’ll agree. I’ll eat one."
"Hmm." Gray handed the fish over.
The dim red glow of the fire extended outside the cave, looking from a distance like a lonely star fallen in the dark wilderness.
Far away, two angels with flapping wings quietly watched the direction where they were. One was Abod, the male angel originally on a mission with Catherine to monitor Gray.
"Found them."
"The problem is they are together... What should we do? If we capture Vivian, Gray will likely stop us," Abod whispered.
The other angel thought a moment and replied, "Maybe we can tell Julian they’re looking for Holy Knight Gray. If they take Gray away, no one will stop us."
"Are you joking? No one is allowed to interfere with Gray’s affairs by the Holy Spirit."
"Leaking a bit of information doesn’t count as interfering?"
"Doesn’t it?"
"Okay, I was just suggesting. Don’t get excited," the angel spread his hands, "if there’s really no other way, we’ll have to inform the Chief of Judgement. It’s crazy, our own Holy Knights fighting each other, one lost, and then got saved by a Succubus."
Watching the other angel, Abod asked, "Who do you think is right?"
"Who’s right about what?"
"I’m asking you, between the warring sides of the Holy Knight civil war, who do you think is right?"
"You’re asking the wrong person; I’m with the Judgement Court. Before a decision, I won’t casually judge who is right or wrong. That’s up to the Judgment Chief to decide."
Listening to this perfect official statement, Abod got irritated and shouted, "Why all the crap? I am just asking for your personal feeling, who do you think is right!"
"Personal feeling?"
"Yes, an opinion with no responsibility."
Thinking it over, the angel stroked his chin and said, "I think it’s a mess. This Gray was brought back by you and Catherine, right? A Lich becoming a Holy Knight was probably a mistake from the start. And this is a Lich that absolutely values light—makes it an even bigger issue. I think the Holy Spirit is putting the church in a difficult position. They have no idea how to handle this new Holy Knight, and the new Holy Knight doesn’t know how to step back. A collision was inevitable. I’m just surprised Julian and the others decided to support such a collision... It’s mind-boggling. Well, that’s what I think."
"Done talking? So you support the church then?" Abod asked.
"No, I don’t support the church. We all know what the church is like. Faith has almost been completely twisted by them," the angel said, spreading his hands, "I think putting the church in a tough spot is good, gives them something to do besides sitting around."
"That was as good as saying nothing."
"Then think of it as me saying nothing. I’m here to catch fugitives, not to judge people. By the way, you’re only here because you know Gray, you were temporarily reassigned."
Abod sighed, silently continuing to watch the direction where Gray and Vivian were.
"You watch here. I’ll go notify the Judgment Chief."
"I thought you’d suggest you watch here, and I go to notify the Judgment Chief."
"Why?"
"So you can let them go."
Glancing at the angel, Abod whispered, "I wouldn’t do that. If I would, Catherine wouldn’t have been his Guardian Angel initially. If I became his Guardian Angel, he wouldn’t have lost this battle."
Saying this, Abod turned, flapped his wings, and disappeared into the starry sky.
