Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Shadows of the Unknown

Mallory sat alone on the roof, staring at the horizon. The faint glow of distant fires lit up the skyline, casting ominous shadows over the city.

Greg climbed up the ladder and approached quietly, his heavy boots barely making a sound.

"Mind some company?" he asked.

Mallory gestured for him to sit. "Can’t sleep?"

Greg chuckled, his voice low. "Sleep? What’s that again?"

"Right," Mallory muttered.

The two sat in companionable silence for a moment, the cool breeze brushing against their faces.

"I’ve been thinking," Greg said finally.

"Uh-oh," Mallory teased.

He smirked. "Very funny. I’m serious, though. We’ve come a long way from scrambling for scraps in the ruins. It feels... strange."

"Strange how?"

"Like we’re not just surviving anymore," Greg said. "We’re fighting back, building something real. It’s good, but it’s terrifying. What if we mess this up? What if we lose it all?"

Mallory turned to him, her eyes steady. "Then we start over. Again and again, if we have to. That’s the only option we’ve got."

Greg nodded, though doubt still flickered in his expression.

Morning Mishap

The next morning began with chaos, as usual.

Blinky, ever the mischief-maker, had somehow gotten into Alex’s stash of coffee. The little drone buzzed erratically around the factory, spilling droplets of precious caffeine in its wake.

"BLINKY!" Alex roared, chasing after the rogue robot.

Ryder and Quinn paused their sparring session to watch the spectacle, laughing as Alex slipped on a spilled patch and landed on his backside.

"I’m going to rewire you into a toaster!" Alex threatened as Blinky buzzed mockingly from the rafters.

"Careful," Quinn quipped. "He might actually enjoy being a toaster. Think of all the bagels he could burn."

Even Elias cracked a rare smile at the scene, though he quickly masked it with a cough.

Mallory emerged from the workshop, holding a map. "What’s all the commotion—" She stopped, taking in Alex’s disheveled state and Blinky’s triumphant beeping. "Never mind. I don’t want to know."

"Control your child," Alex grumbled, pointing at Blinky.

Mallory sighed, shaking her head. "He’s your problem when I’m busy."

The Plan Unfolds

Once order was restored, the group gathered around the war table. Mallory spread the map out, marking key locations with red pins.

"We’ve identified three major areas where the Shadows’ influence is strongest," she began. "If we can disrupt their hold on these zones, it might weaken their hive mind enough for us to strike directly."

Elias frowned, tapping his chin. "That’s a bold assumption. What if it doesn’t work?"

"Then we adapt," Mallory said firmly.

Greg leaned forward. "What’s the plan for these zones?"

"We’ll divide into teams again," Mallory explained. "Each group will hit a different zone. The goal is to create as much chaos as possible—draw the Shadows’ attention, destroy their resources, and, if we’re lucky, capture more intel."

Alex groaned. "Let me guess. I’m on base duty again?"

"Not this time," Mallory said, smirking. "You’re coming with me to the western zone."

Alex blinked. "Wait, seriously? You’re trusting me on the front lines?"

"More like I need someone to keep Blinky in check," Mallory replied, earning a round of laughter from the group.

Western Zone: Chaos in the Streets

Mallory’s team consisted of herself, Alex, Blinky, and Harper. The western zone was a labyrinth of narrow streets and crumbling buildings, making it an ideal hiding spot for the Shadows.

As they navigated the maze, Blinky suddenly stopped, its lights flashing in a frantic pattern.

"What’s wrong, buddy?" Alex asked, crouching down.

Before anyone could react, a Shadow emerged from the darkness, its claws swiping at Blinky. Alex tackled the drone to the ground, shielding it as Mallory and Harper opened fire.

The creature let out a guttural roar before collapsing in a heap.

"Is everyone okay?" Mallory asked, helping Alex up.

"Blinky’s fine," Alex said, cradling the drone like a baby. "But you owe me hazard pay."

Harper rolled her eyes. "You get paid in survival, Alex."

They pressed on, encountering several more Shadows along the way. Each skirmish was brief but intense, leaving the group more exhausted with every encounter.

Finally, they reached their target: a makeshift command post the Shadows had set up in an abandoned shopping center.

"Ready?" Mallory whispered.

Alex grinned. "Always."

The group stormed the building, catching the Shadows off guard. Explosions and gunfire echoed through the halls as they dismantled the command post piece by piece.

Blinky proved its worth by hacking into the Shadows’ communications network, gathering valuable intel before self-destructing the system to prevent it from being traced.

"Good job, buddy," Alex said, patting the drone.

Eastern Zone: A Fiery Escape

Meanwhile, Greg, Quinn, and Elias tackled the eastern zone, a desolate industrial park filled with rusting machinery and toxic fumes.

Their mission took a turn for the worse when one of Quinn’s grenades accidentally triggered a chain reaction, setting off a massive fire.

"Oops," Quinn said, wincing as flames engulfed the area.

"Oops?" Greg repeated incredulously. "You call that oops?"

"Focus!" Elias snapped. "We need to get out of here before we’re cooked alive!"

The trio ran through the burning maze, Shadows hot on their heels. Greg and Elias provided cover fire while Quinn tried to salvage what she could from the mission.

"Next time," Greg said between breaths, "we’re leaving the pyromaniac at home."

"Aw, don’t be like that," Quinn replied with a grin. "You’d miss me."

Despite the chaos, they managed to escape with minimal injuries—and a few valuable items scavenged from the wreckage.

Reunion and Revelations

The teams regrouped at the factory, battered but victorious. Mallory laid the gathered intel on the table, her eyes scanning the documents.

"This is it," she said, her voice filled with both excitement and trepidation. "Coordinates to a central Shadow hub. If we hit this, we might just turn the tide."

The group exchanged looks, a mix of determination and fear.

"Then let’s get to work," Greg said, his voice steady.

Mallory nodded. "We’re not just surviving anymore. We’re taking back what’s ours."

As the team began preparing for their next mission, Alex leaned back in his chair, watching the chaos unfold around him.

"Well," he said to Blinky, "at least it’s never boring."
