The Last King Of Darkness -
Chapter 171 - 125: Choices and Hunts
Chapter 171: Chapter 125: Choices and Hunts
Most people tended to choose to seek help.
But Steel Hand and the others knew this was impossible.
Under the Black Tide, all places needed support, and Sword Pass was far from the hardest hit.
They had even already received support beyond the usual, so the likelihood of a second reinforcement was very slim.
Worse, in the subsequent investigations, they had not found any spies.
It was almost impossible for anyone to do such a thing.
Steel Hand could only announce that from now on, everyone must travel in groups of three or more, sleep in communal rooms, and no one was allowed to act alone.
Afterward, they held a funeral for their fallen comrades.
At the Guardian Fire Sacrificial Ground, Mo’er drew a strand of flame from the Guardian Fire and let it fall on the bodies of the unlucky fallen warriors.
The flames ignited on their bodies, turning them into ashes.
Mo’er placed the soul ashes back into the Guardian Fire and solemnly said,
"May you forever rest in the realm of fire, may your will be passed on with our torch, never to be extinguished."
Everyone said in unison,
"May our souls forever be with the fire, and may the sun one day shine upon the earth."
The sacrificial altar quieted down, the golden Guardian Fire burned quietly on the stone platform.
It was as if time had stopped at that moment.
As their sorrow calmed, people seemed to see the smiles of their comrades in a sunny paradise.
After the funeral, Steel Hand still decided to try asking for help.
After all, there might have been a Doomsday believer at Sword Pass, which was an unusual situation.
However, just as he had finished writing the letter for help, a silver bird from Dawn Fortress arrived in the conference room.
Accompanied by a light chirp, the silver bird transformed into several lines of silver script.
"Notice from Dawn Fortress:
Linfeng City has fallen, Dragon Pass has been breached, the Seventh Battle Group has been completely annihilated.
The Black Tide has crossed the border.
Monsters are advancing from the south to the west, straight through Eagle’s Nest Town and the valley, the southern seven villages have been abandoned, evacuation teams are moving east along the Dead Mountain Range, the royal city’s battle groups are gathering in the east.
Giant Fortress and Sword Pass must hold back the Black Tide invasion and ensure the safety of the rear.
Tens of thousands of people are on the move, warriors are fighting bloodily.
Please protect them.
Sincerely.
May the fire always walk with us.
Guardian Wolfgang von Jon of the Seventh Defense Zone."
——
The silver script shone brightly in the air.
The command room plunged into a deathlike silence.
Suddenly, Steel Hand tore up the request for help and said calmly, "We only have two choices now."
No one spoke, whether venturing out to hunt or holding Sword Pass was extremely difficult.
Bach, who had been mostly quiet since arriving at Sword Pass, suddenly said, "Maybe it’s simple."
All eyes shifted to him.
But Bach closed his mouth and said no more.
Mo’er pondered for a moment, then suddenly clapped his hands, "That’s right, maybe things aren’t as difficult as we thought. The master of the evil spirits is just a name, it’s actually a higher-level evil spirit, its absence in attacking us proves it’s not mobile, I found some monster souls locked by an unknown entity before, they must be its creations, it suggests that it might be in some special weakened state."
Bach nodded, struggled to speak, "There is, a strange Soul Devouring phenomenon, it, it’s devouring souls."
Steel Hand finally understood and asked anxiously, "So can we kill it?"
Bach nodded, then fell silent again.
"But, we don’t know where it is."
Mo’er said, "I can find out, I can enter the Spirit Realm, and using its mark I can deduce its location."
Steel Hand suddenly jumped up, excitedly said, "Then let’s quickly form a Hunting Squad!"
Bach nodded, pointed at himself, then at Rod, and then at an empty spot.
Steel Hand hesitated, "Two people? Isn’t the minimum three for a squad?"
A disgruntled voice came from the empty spot, "Are you blind? Don’t you see me?"
Steel Hand leaned over to look, and it turned out to be White Smoke Aig, he awkwardly smiled, "Sorry, you were so short, I didn’t notice."
Aig angrily said, "Are you blind? I’m clearly one meter seventy! How am I short?"
Steel Hand looked at him quizzically. Egger was not half his height and he himself was only two and three yards tall, not a three-yard-four giant.
Reslin hastily interjected, "Mr. Bach, aren’t three people too few? The outer shell of that high-ranking evil spirit is so tough, can three people really break through it?"
Bach shook his head.
"The true form is very weak. I can kill it. Rod, scout, in case of emergency, the spiritual energy cannon will back us up, and Egger will fly."
Dark Leaf immediately understood.
"You mean, the true form is actually very fragile, you can kill it, Rod is in charge of scouting, and in an emergency, he can use the spiritual energy cannon to assist you while Egger uses White Smoke to fly you there and back, is that it?"
Bach nodded.
Dark Leaf asked, "Egger, can you take more people with you when you fly?"
Egger shook his head, "My White Smoke only has three Fireworks. Including myself, I can only carry three people."
Steel Hand thought for a while and the more he thought about it, the more it made sense. This was the best approach and the three of them were indeed the most suitable candidates.
Usually reticent, Bach’s thoughts were surprisingly profound.
Steel Hand looked at him with newfound respect.
"That settles it then! If you three need any materials, please let me know directly."
Bach shook his head.
Rod did not ask for any either; he was not short of materials, what he lacked was not available in Sword Pass.
Egger thought for a while and asked for many potions and items.
Mo’er said, "You need to prepare as quickly as possible. In half a day’s time, I should be able to locate the high-ranking evil spirit, and the sooner we destroy it, the better."
Rod nodded. This was clearly an excellent opportunity.
In the half-day before departure, Rod went through all his materials and sacrificed all his spirits.
The "Fallen Evil Spirit" was very valuable, worth four hundred souls without spirit.
In a fleeting moment, Rod’s count of souls without spirit reached 31,050.
At the Obelisk, he poured all the souls without spirit into "Justice Execution."
The bright yellow flame became even brighter, like a burning fire.
After adding them all, the strength of "Justice Execution" had reached 800.
Rod felt it was about to reach its limit.
He glanced again at the only Black Priest’s soul he had retained, which was his prepared kindling for igniting the stars. In dangerous times, he could at any time choose one of the stars "Spirit Boat," "Giant Power," or "Star Night Nightingale."
Suddenly, he thought of the polluted soul ashes, which were made using polluted Sun Stones.
Rod remembered that the Sun Stones of the Polluter Sect were all tampered with by the Black Priest, no wonder the evil spirits spewed shit-yellow colors upon consuming it.
No wonder they went mad.
Anyone would react like that if they accidentally ate shit.
Unfortunately, the polluted Sun Stones had been destroyed, and there were no more Black Priests, otherwise, there might have been a new way to go.
Rod sighed, glanced at his soul strength which was now as high as 1,040, and returned to the material world.
Pretending to meditate, he actually slept for a few clock hours until teacher Mo’er woke him up.
"Alert!"
He shouted in Rod’s ear.
"You’re sleeping at a time like this?"
Rod, having been startled awake, swept his empty eye sockets disapprovingly, "With teacher Mo’er here on watch, why can’t I sleep?"
Mo’er’s joy +50
Humanity +5
Mo’er looked at him sternly, without a trace of a smile.
"We’re leaving! I have already informed Bach of the direction."
He paused briefly and said in a grave voice.
"Kid, I won’t say much else, but even if we fail, you must come back alive for me, my student. I won’t allow you to die so early."
Rod laughed, "Of course! I still want to attend several more of your monster classes, your analogy of describing the waveform of monster souls as maiden-like was simply brilliant."
Egger passed by and spat, "Creep! Be careful the Disciplinary Committee doesn’t catch you! You wouldn’t want to know their correction methods."
Mo’er glared at him.
"What’s there to catch? They allow you but forbid me to speak? How did I teach you back then? Your White Smoke is still Three Fireworks, what have you been doing these past few years? You haven’t grown at all, haven’t developed any characteristics, if you had Nine Fireworks, how many people could you carry? How many monsters could you control on the battlefield? Would we still have suffered such heavy losses?"
Egger’s face immediately turned as red as a liver, and he dared not retort or scold Rod again, suddenly turning his head and snapping, "What are you looking at? Heal me now!"
Karamon looked aggrieved, not understanding what he had done wrong.
At that moment, Bach came in clad in knight’s armor and said succinctly.
"Departure!"
