Chapter 969: Chapter 969: The Whole Family Takes the Train (5)

A snicker came from the back seat, and beside him Shu Jiao also gave him a disapproving look. Ruan Jianguo immediately felt he had lost face, but one can’t snap at the wife, though the son is fair game.

He lectured Ruan Jie at length, luckily Ruan Jie was used to it, or else he would indeed start questioning his life choices.

The group continued on their way to Changling, chatting and laughing merrily.

The winter roads were tough for driving. The train was scheduled for just after five in the evening, and the Ruan family had set off at nine in the morning. A journey that normally took three to four hours had today taken them five or six.

Fortunately, the train was scheduled for later, otherwise, they wouldn’t have made it at all.

When they arrived in Changling, it was a little past three in the afternoon. Everyone was tired after sitting in the car for so long, and Ruan Jiaojiao was especially drowsy, so once they got off the car, Ruan Jie carried her on his back.

Since two drivers had come especially to drop them off, Ruan Jianguo definitely couldn’t let them leave empty-handed, so they found a restaurant near the train station to eat.

The train station’s restaurant was both expensive and of poor quality, nowhere near as good as the restaurants run by the Ruan family, yet many people were still dining there. Ruan Jiaojiao had little appetite after sitting in the car for half a day. She nestled in Shu Jiao’s arms, barely eating half a bowl of porridge before she couldn’t eat anymore.

Fortunately, they had brought plenty of snacks with them, so not having a good meal now wouldn’t leave them hungry on the train later.

After dinner, it was already past four, and fearing they’d be late to catch the train, they hurried to the station. Although they had quite a bit of luggage, with Ruan Jie and Xiu Xi, two young men, plus Ruan Jianguo, handling a couple of hundred pounds of baggage was no problem at all. So, they let the drivers head back first to avoid the increasingly difficult roads at night.

Ruan Jianguo had originally planned to book two rooms at the guest house for them, but the two insisted on not staying and left soon after dropping off the Ruan family.

It was still early for boarding their train, so Ruan Jianguo placed all the luggage in the spot closest to the boarding area. Maybe because it was close to the end of the year, and most people were heading home, there were fewer people going out, leaving the entire waiting room rather desolate.

Ruan Jiaojiao, who had been quite sleepy initially, was no longer sleepy by the time she reached the waiting room. She sat up straight from Shu Jiao’s embrace, curiously surveying the waiting room.

The waiting room was quite basic and had few people, with only the occasional seller passing through with drawer boxes hanging from their bodies, peddling cigarettes.

Seeing the group that included Ruan Jiaojiao and some men, they all walked over, calling out their wares.

Ruan Jiaojiao had no interest in cigarettes but did notice a small store opened by the train station. Referred to as a small store, it was actually a rectangular glass cabinet displaying some biscuits, cigarettes, and instant noodles.

The instant noodles were placed in the most conspicuous spot.

Ruan Jiaojiao had never eaten instant noodles, having only seen them in books. In this era, instant noodles were not yet a universally known convenience food, so Ruan Jiaojiao hadn’t tasted them either.

Normally, her snacks were either bought by her brothers or by Xiu Xi, so she seldom bought snacks on her own and hadn’t paid attention to instant noodles.

Now that she saw them, she was somewhat curious.

"Want to try?" She was staring in a direction, and how could Xiu Xi not notice; he followed her gaze, then asked.

"We might not have time," Ruan Jiaojiao answered without specifically saying she wanted to eat, but Xiu Xi understood the implication in her words.

He got up and walked over to the small store.

In less than two minutes, he was back with two packets of instant noodles.

Train stations have places to get hot water, and this was also a first for the Ruanlin Family to see instant noodles. Seeing that Ruan Jiaojiao wanted to try, she went to the hot water room to fetch some boiling water.
