Chapter 474: Chapter 474: Skipping Grades (4)_1

The first-grade lessons were really too easy for Ruan Jiaojiao and Xiu Xi. Ruan Jiaojiao almost dozed off throughout the morning. When the fourth class finally ended and the bell rang, she quickly got up and left the classroom with Xiu Xi.

Once out of the classroom, she saw Shu Jiao already waiting for them at the door. The two of them hurried over.

After Little Fatty and the others also arrived, Shu Jiao led them to a big tree. They spread out a floral cloth in the shade and took out the dishes from the basket—four in total, two vegetarian and two meat, with Ruan Jiaojiao having her own bowl of soup.

"There were simply too many dishes, and it was not convenient for your aunt to carry them all, so she only brought soup for you girls. But there’s more at home for you to have later. Is it alright for your sister to have her soup first?" Shu Jiao said gently as she laid out the dishes.

"Of course, let sister have it. It’s no trouble for us," Little Fatty immediately responded upon hearing this.

"Exactly, sister is not well; she should have the best," Ruan Wei also agreed that it was only proper.

"Aunt is so kind to prepare so much food," Ruan Qun said, his eyes fixed on the dishes, saliva pooling in his mouth, not caring about the soup—he just wanted to start eating.

Ruan Feng, being the oldest and most sensible there, smiled and said, "Thank you, aunt."

"It’s nothing. Hurry up and eat," Shu Jiao replied with a smile. After handing Ruan Jiaojiao her bowl, she urged them to eat quickly.

Ruan Jiaojiao, watching Shu Jiao look on with relish as they ate, felt an aching sense of poignancy. Especially when she thought of her mother’s protection that morning, her heart was filled with a hurtful and bittersweet warmth.

She hummed awkwardly, "Mom, did you eat?"

"Yes, I ate before coming," Shu Jiao answered. In truth, just like the Ruanlin Family, she hadn’t eaten at all. It was her first time bringing food to her daughter, and she was so eager to see her eat that she forgot about feeding herself.

Ruan Jian/Guo had even scolded her for this at home, but Shu Jiao didn’t care. She had left her daughter wanting for too much, and all she could think about now was how to make amends, not caring how she herself fared.

Unfortunately, her stomach was not as stoic as that of the Ruanlin Family.

No sooner had she claimed to have eaten than her stomach gurgled audibly. It wasn’t loud, but everyone present could clearly hear it.

Shu Jiao had been busy since early morning.

First, she made breakfast for them, three different kinds, and after they left, she promptly made goat milk for Ruan Jiaojiao and hurried to bring it to school. After spending so much time at the school and then having to go home and help Ruan Jiaojiao and the others with laundry, she had to rush to prepare lunch.

Since her return to Beidu, she had cooked less frequently. At home, the family patriarch couldn’t chew hard foods, so she mostly made soups. As a result, her cooking skills had become a bit rusty.

Now, with the Ruanlin Family unable to cook, she had taken over preparing meals for the entire household.

Even in the hospital, she tried to make soups whenever possible and cooked only dishes within her skill set. But she had repeatedly made the same few dishes at the hospital, and it didn’t seem right to continue that at home, fearing that Ruan Jiaojiao might tire of them. So she changed up two dishes on the menu.

The already cooking-challenged Shu Jiao, out of practice, naturally had trouble cooking the dishes well. She had ruined two before managing to make these four, and even these were only successful after the Ruanlin Family couldn’t bear to watch and stepped in to guide her.
