Chapter 272: Chapter 272: Changchong (4)_1
Xiu Xi, who had been silent beside them, flickered his gaze for the first time. He did not protect Ruan Jiaojiao as usual but instead, somewhat guiltily, averted his eyes, and his ear tips also turned red.
However, the Ruan Family’s attention was not on him at that moment, so no one noticed.
That night, whether it was because of persistent thoughts during the day leading to dreams at night, Ruan Jiaojiao dreamt again of Ruan Qun’s death. This dream was different from the last one; she saw Ruan Qun as if he was following someone. The person in front was walking quite fast, and he was trailing behind, desperately trying to keep up. He even fell once, but quickly got back up and chased after the person, shouting something.
Ruan Jiaojiao couldn’t hear what he was saying; she could only try hard to decipher it from the shape of his mouth.
It seemed to be a double-syllable?
She wanted to move forward to identify it more clearly, but Ruan Qun passed through her body to chase ahead. She could only helplessly follow and then saw him reach the vicinity of the front mountain. He did not enter the front mountain area, only lingered nearby.
A cluster of snakes sprang out from nowhere, surrounding him in the middle, and then the scene she had dreamt before unfolded.
A dark green venomous snake with a scar on its mouth bit him to death in one strike; when he died, his eyes were still staring in a certain direction, which should be where the person he had been following stood.
His mouth was moving, calling out a double-syllable name.
It seemed to be—Jiaojiao!
Ruan Jiaojiao was scared by this possibility and woke up from the dream in horror, her eyes wide open as she sat up in bed, her whole body drenched in cold sweat.
How is that possible!
How is that possible!
It can’t be, it simply can’t be.
How could it be the original protagonist Ruan Jiaojiao! How could it be!
She was the beloved granddaughter of the Ruan Family; everyone in the Ruan Family loved her so much. How could she possibly do such a thing? She had no motive and no reason to do so.
Ruan Jiaojiao denied the possibility.
But a voice in her mind was telling her that it might be true.
Considering the precursor of the Ruanlin Family, she could watch Ruanlin die without doing anything; she might be able to witness other members of the Ruan Family die as well. Even Ruan Jie’s death under the wheels happened right under her watch, and yet she was still madly in love with the male protagonist Xiu Xun!
She had never really cared about the Ruan Family!
"Darling?" Ruanlin called out tentatively from beside her, not daring to raise her voice too much, fearing that Ruan Jiaojiao might be sleepwalking, and a loud voice might startle her.
Ruan Jiaojiao turned her head to look at her. In the darkness, the moonlight shone in from outside, and even though her vision was blurry, Ruan Jiaojiao could still make out the tenderness and love on Ruanlin’s face.
Feeling her move, Ruanlin reached out to touch her only to feel the cold sweat on her body, which alarmed her.
"What’s wrong? Are you feeling hot?" she asked, reaching out for a fan nearby.
Ruan Jiaojiao did not reply but buried her head in her arms, her heart pounding as if it would leap out of her throat.
Ruanlin felt the sweat-soaked back: "Did you have a nightmare?" she asked softly, patting gently, "Don’t be scared, don’t be scared, grandma is here, I’m right here, no villain can harm our Jiaojiao."
Ruan Jiaojiao felt a warmth in her eyes and mumbled an acknowledgement.
She wasn’t afraid of a villain harming her; she was afraid of a villain harming them, and she was powerless to prevent it.
She clung tightly to Ruanlin’s warm body, trying to bury her small frame as deep as she could. Ruanlin thought she was simply frightened by a nightmare and gently patted her back until she began to calm down. Then Ruanlin carefully got up and went out into the darkness to fetch a towel.
