Chapter 168: Chapter 168: The Heroine’s Thoughts (2)_1
Even so, Wa Yiting had no desire to leave. She hung her head, her eyes rimmed red, as she listlessly fiddled with the dried vegetables in her hands, performing one pointless task after another.
Ruan Jiaojiao nestled in the arms of the Ruanlin Family’s matriarch, furrowing her brow as she watched her.
In this day and age, it was rare to see someone fighting over a grandmother. How was she supposed to make this protagonist, tenacious as Xiaoqiang, stop coveting her grandma?
After the pickled vegetables had been dried in the sun, Wa Yiting put down the winnowing basket and picked up a broom. Stubborn as a mule, she began sweeping the yard. The Ruanlin Family matriarch told her several times not to bother, but seeing Wa Yiting remain unmoved, she also felt very helpless.
After all, she was an old woman. How could she really hold a grudge against a young girl?
When the Ruanlin Family matriarch was picking vegetables, Wa Yiting voluntarily came over to help. Head bowed, she didn’t interact with anyone. Her isolated demeanor was quite pitiful. Ruan Jiaojiao had been filled with anger, but upon seeing this, it suddenly deflated.
After all, she knew the Ruanlin Family matriarch wouldn’t adopt her again. Looking at Wa Yiting, she also seemed pitiful.
So, when it was time for candy, she gave her one.
Wa Yiting stared at the White Rabbit Creamy Candy in front of her, slightly stunned.
Ever since their fall-out, Ruan Jiaojiao had never again offered her anything to eat. She had come to seek reconciliation several times, but Ruan Jiaojiao had always been dismissive. After the Ruan Family took in Xiu Xi, Wa Yiting had even less chance to get close to her.
Was she giving her candy because she wanted to play with her again?
"Take it, it’s really tasty," Ruan Jiaojiao said, shoving the candy into her hand. Thinking of something, her dark eyes twinkled, and she said with a smile, "Consider it your wages for helping my grandma with work today."
"I don’t want it!" Wa Yiting immediately flicked the candy away upon hearing this.
She didn’t want wages!
She wasn’t a maid!
She wanted to be a child of the Ruan Family, just like Xiu Xi!
"What are you doing! That candy was bought by brother, it’s very expensive!" Ruan Jiaojiao looked distressed as the candy flew out, sullied with dust. That candy was not cheap; she herself was reluctant to eat it. She only allowed herself two pieces a day, and now that she had given Wa Yiting one, it was actually tossed aside?
Ruan Jiaojiao hurried over to pick up the candy. She tapped the wrapper, relieved to see it could be cleaned.
Next to her, Xiu Xi watched the candy that ought to have been his being given to someone else, then treated with disregard. His face grew dark, his gaze nearly ice-cold as he stared at the instigator.
Though only seven or eight years old, his oppressive aura was almost suffocating for Wa Yiting.
Deep within her heart, she harbored a fearful emotion towards Xiu Xi.
She shrank back a step, yet her eyes still glared at Ruan Jiaojiao. After yelling, "I hate you," she ran off.
"..." Ruan Jiaojiao, in an ungraceful manner, rolled her eyes.
She knew, alright. It wasn’t the first time she had heard these words from the protagonist’s mouth. She was always saying she hated her. If she hated her that much, why did she keep coming to her home? Wouldn’t it be better if they just kept to their own lives?
After Wa Yiting ran off, Ruan Jiaojiao offered the candy to Xiu Xi.
"I don’t want it," the little antagonist turned his head away, refusing.
Huh?
What’s with each and every one of them? They didn’t want candy now?
"You really don’t want it?" Ruan Jiaojiao asked.
"I don’t," Xiu Xi refused bluntly. After a few seconds, he added, "This one."
"..." So picky.
Ruan Jiaojiao was speechless, but since the candy was originally meant for him too, she pulled out another piece and handed it to him; she herself ate the piece that had fallen to the ground.
