Chapter 156: Chapter 156 Scheming and Calculating (5)_1
With that, her gaze turned toward the Ruan Family’s main gate, hoping someone would come out to see.
But—still no one did.
Liu Mei pursed her lips, standing in the courtyard, feeling as if her punch had landed on cotton, somewhat unpleasant.
In the end, she glared at the Ruan Family’s side and entered the house, carrying the bamboo rat.
Next door at the Ruan Family’s, the Ruanlin lady was picking vegetables, and Ruan Jiaojiao sat on a little stool helping. As she picked, she kept an eye on her grandma’s expression. She couldn’t tell if it was just her imagination, but she felt that whenever Liu Mei called out those couple of times, her grandma’s aura dropped significantly. She guessed her grandma had never felt so stifled in her life.
"What are you looking at me for?"
"Grandma, are you angry?" Ruan Jiaojiao asked knowingly.
"What’s there to be angry about? Is Liu Mei even worth your grandma’s attention?" The Ruanlin lady looked disdainful. However, despite her words, she still said to Ruan Jiaojiao, "Later, call your brother Xiu Xi over for dinner."
"Yes!" Ruan Jiaojiao nodded vigorously.
The Ruanlin lady affectionately patted her little head and then carried the basket to the kitchen.
Ruan Jiaojiao washed her hands by the well, dried them roughly with a towel, picked up two White Rabbit Creamy Candies from the stool, and headed to find Xiu Xi. As she turned around, she saw Xiu Xi standing at the entrance to the courtyard.
"Brother Xiu Xi, have some candy." She handed the White Rabbit Creamy Candies to him, the best candy she had ever tasted, far better than fruit candy or mint candy. The milk flavor was particularly rich and creamy.
Regarding anything Ruan Jiaojiao gave him, Xiu Xi would eat it, even if he wasn’t interested.
He took the candy from her hand, unwrapped one, and stuffed it into her little mouth first, watching her enjoyably squint her big eyes. Then he unwrapped the other and put it in his own mouth.
The two sat on the steps of the courtyard, eating the White Rabbit Creamy Candies.
Ruan Jiaojiao dangled her little feet and asked him, "Brother Xiu Xi, when will you come over to my house for dinner? Grandma misses you."
"Soon," Xiu Xi replied, his gaze focused on her. "In the future, we’ll never be apart again."
Ruan Jiaojiao blinked, and even if she didn’t know what he was planning, she still trusted him implicitly. She nodded earnestly and said, "Dad says that in the new building, there’s a room for you. When the time comes, you can live with us, and we’ll go to school together."
They would grow up together, and she would make sure to watch over him, so he wouldn’t stray down the path of a villain.
Hearing that, Xiu Xi also nodded solemnly.
That afternoon and evening, Xiu Xi did not dine at the Ruan Family’s.
At the Xiu Family’s place, even though Liu Mei spoke nicely, she had not prepared a portion for Xiu Xi, and didn’t call him at mealtime. The family of three ate with relish.
Xiu Xi did not come forward, silently staying in his miscellaneous goods store like an invisible person.
After finishing dinner, Liu Mei washed Xiu Cheng’s face and feet. As she passed by Xiu Xi’s miscellaneous goods store carrying a kerosene lamp, she couldn’t help but peek inside and saw him indeed sleeping there. Surprisingly, she arched an eyebrow.
Ever since the Ruanlin lady announced Xiu Xi was under her care, he had hardly spent a night at home and was rarely around during the day. Liu Mei used to find him annoying and was glad he wasn’t home.
She even thought that the Ruanlin lady was being foolish, raising such an outsider for no good reason was simply idiotic.
But these past few days, she noticed Xiu Xi suddenly staying at home every day, sleeping there at night, though he still didn’t join them at the table for meals. She was curious—if he had been eating outside as before, or had he taken his meals at the Ruan Family’s when she wasn’t paying attention?
