Chapter 1027: Chapter 1027: Xin Miao (5)

"What’s wrong, wife?" Seeing Shu Jiao hitting Ruan Jie, Ruan Jianguo jogged over, his eyes wide as he looked at Shu Jiao. The meaning in his gaze was obvious—if Shu Jiao said even one bad thing about Ruan Jie, he would immediately roll up his sleeves and step in personally to teach Ruan Jie what true fatherly fury, like a mudslide, felt like!

Shu Jiao shook her head. She was just too shaken. Thinking back on the past few days, she felt Ruan Jiaojiao had been dancing on the edge of death.

Ruan Jiaojiao, who had witnessed everything, silently lit a candle in her heart for her bewildered second brother. This was the first time she had seen Shu Jiao so angry.

The others were even more dumbfounded—the Shu family had never seen Shu Jiao act like this before.

Suppressing her fear and lingering panic, Shu Jiao faced the room full of puzzled faces. She realized her reaction might have been over-the-top. She looked at Ruan Jie and said, "Stop wasting all your time on video games. Read a book for once."

"...," Ruan Jie thought to himself. He had lived like this all along, so why did he get hit today?

"Exactly, that’s right! Look at you—what do you even look like?" Ruan Jianguo, ever the loyal supporter of Shu Jiao, immediately chimed in. He snatched the game console Ruan Jie had been playing mid-game, striking the perfect pose of a parent confiscating a toy. Yet, he secretly pressed the reset button and started playing himself.

"...," Ruan Jie thought to himself. Alright, fine. His status at home was even lower than his dad’s. He decided to stay quiet—better to avoid saying anything in case it turned out wrong.

Ruan Jiaojiao didn’t stay downstairs for long before she became too sleepy to bear it. She leaned against the Ruanlin Family matriarch, dozing off. The matriarch coaxed her upstairs to sleep, and Xiu Xi followed, sitting by her bedside to watch her for a while.

He felt as though he had overlooked some key detail, but for now, he couldn’t grasp it—it remained a loose thread he couldn’t untangle.

——

In the days that followed, Ruan Jiaojiao didn’t leave the Shu household at all. She obediently stayed home watching TV, doing homework, and playing games.

Time flew by. More than ten days passed in an instant, and New Year’s was just around the corner. The weather was growing colder and colder.

One morning, when Ruan Jiaojiao woke up, Xiu Xi suddenly announced that he wanted to take her to meet someone. Before she could understand what was happening, she found herself in a car parked outside the Shu family’s home.

Though Ruan Jiaojiao was full of questions, she didn’t feel too scared, since Xiu Xi was by her side. Her heart brimmed with curiosity instead.

It wasn’t until the car stopped in front of a hospital and she was led all the way to a ward that she discovered Xiu Xi had brought her to see none other than Duan Qianyang, her original father from her previous life—the origin of the villain.

Duan Qianyang truly was a strikingly handsome man. Even now, consumed by illness, his eyes were a perfect match for Xiu Xi’s, bright and intense—not at all like someone suffering from a serious disease. When he saw them, his whole face lit up.

At first sight, Ruan Jiaojiao couldn’t resist marveling.

She couldn’t help but wonder just then: Was the person beside her merely a dumb wolf, or was he truly Xiu Xi?

In her previous life, Xiu Xi hadn’t been particularly remarkable. Despite being brilliant enough to develop world-ending viruses, he had rarely appeared in public. He had silently shielded Wa Yiting, acting as something of a Defender in the shadows. As a result, her inherited memories of him were vague—she couldn’t even recall whether his eyes resembled those of the dumb wolf standing next to her now.

However, she had heard from her grandmother that Xiu Xi was born with green eyes when he was a child.
