Chapter 317: 316. What The Future Holds For Us (2)
The next couple of days passed by on a blur. Dad left Ryujin mansion after spending some more time with Kai and me, meanwhile I became busy to prepare for the Founding Day ball that was announced to be held this year.
I had received a formal invitation from the King’s side to be present at this ball and as a respectful citizen I had replied as I would be there.
The ball was going to be held in half a month and before that I was busy with catching up with the nobles who were working under me. The paperwork that was mounting and the kids.
Silas hadn’t contacted me in these past couple of days and I was starting to feel slightly worried. He was pissed off the last time when I had told him and Grandfather about what happened in Denril. I hadn’t gotten a chance to talk after that since he never responded to the communication device nor did he reach out to me. I was contemplating on dropping by at the Mage’s Tower to see how he was doing.
Kai was slowly starting to open up to the kids as I would take him to Eldarf every weekend. The kids were gentle with him and often asked him questions and told him about stuff that they did at Eldarf.
The Dark Elves though had decided to make their own small space because of their opposing nature with the Elves. They had taken up the darker part of the forest deeper inside the woods where they had a small manor made for them. I dropped by to check on them after my return and was glad to see Anore and others settling in well.
Currently, I was at Eldarf watching the kids teach Kai on how to cut vegetables to make a soup.
I sat in the chair with Kent who was biting his nails and the adult Dwarves who seemed as worried as Kent. I sipped my tea leisurely watching the kids.
"Master?" Kent spoke up.
"Hm?"
"Is it all right for the kids to teach Young Master about this? He’s still too younger than them what if he cuts his fingers or something?"
"Even I was wondering the same thing, Master." Warth said.
"He is so small and his fingers are so tiny and soft, I feel kind of sick imagining him cutting his fingers." Yuder spoke and covered his mouth as his face turned slightly green.
I chuckled, "It’s fine, he’ll heal himself."
Kent looked at me before starting to whine, "What about the pain? He looks like he’ll cry and never come back if he gets hurt."
"And we wouldn’t be able to see the little Dragon growing up." Erwin sighed.
"He’s so adorable though, we can’t get enough to watching him." Bonnie sighed with a smile.
I smiled, "It’s fine, I’m here."
Kent sighed deeply, he cared about the kids deeply and when he got to know that Kai was only 5, he had taken all the precautions to not let him be hurt. Kai looked a lot more weaker than the other kids so, it was only natural. But it was kind of cute to see Kent fuss over it.
"That’s right, just cut it slowly." Sylvia spoke.
"Wow, his fingers are so small."
"They’re so white."
"Young Master, here eat this," Viella said as she put the small cherry tomato near his mouth and he ate it.
"His cheeks are puffed up, so cute!"
"I want to poke those cheeks!"
I could hear the kids squealing among themselves as they watched Kai concentrating on the most important work of cutting the vegetables to bite sized so that it would be easy to cook and eat.
It seemed like feeding Kai was more interesting as they watching his cheeks puff up and since it was taking time they were keeping him fed so that he wouldn’t be famished.
His cheeks were kind of puffed up and his lips pouted as he focused on his work and even I was tempted to poke his cheeks.
After a while, when Kai was done cutting the vegetables. It had taken him and hour to only cut tomatoes while the kids had chopped the other vegetables and even made the other dishes.
"Now, let’s put all this in the pot."
The kids took Kai towards the fire and Kent at once was out of his seat and rushing towards them.
"No, no, no!" He shouted.
"What’s wrong, Big Brother? Are you that hungry?" Viella asked.
"Just wait for a bit, we are almost done." Liam said.
"Big Brother Kent you shouldn’t rush us, we’re taking all the precautions so that, Young Master would learn without any problems." Rowan chided.
Kent sighed as he looked once at Kai who looked at him innocently before he looked at me.
"I can understand that you’re teaching, Young Master so well but, it’s still not time for him to go near the fire."
"Why not?"
"Yes, he’s Master’s son, so he also has water element. He won’t be hurt."
I almost choked on my tea as I heard that and everyone turned to look at me at once.
I coughed lightly and Lyall quickly handed me a glass of water, while the others looked a bit concerned.
"I’m fine." I told them and then sighed.
"Kai is not my biological son, kids." I said.
"He’s your adopted son, though."
"Nephew." I corrected.
"Still, he’s your child." Rowan said and I sighed.
"Fine, say whatever you want."
I saw Kai’s face turning slightly red and Kent took over.
"I’ll make the soup, you kids go and wash up."
"What?!"
"But we’re almost done!"
"Go and wash up, now!" Kent ordered.
"You can’t order, Young Master around, Big Brother." Cyrus said and the kids nodded.
Kent sighed and then got down on his knees before Kai.
"Young Master, would you let me finish this work up. I’m sure Master must be hungry and waiting to eat."
Kai looked once at me and I gave him a smile.
"You should also go and wash yourself up, Young Master." Kent spoke in a soft and gentle voice.
The kids were shocked to hear him talk so softly though, their reactions were funny when he spoke to Kai.
"Wait, am I hearing things?"
"Big Brother Kent could speak so softly?"
"Who are you and what have you done to our Big Brother?"
"Master, Big Brother Kent is sick!"
"I’m not, cut it out!" He snapped and Kai flinched making him sigh.
"I’m sorry, Young Master."
"Kids," I spoke up making them all look at me.
"Listen to your Big Brother," I said and they moved.
Kent narrowed his eyes at the kids before he looked at Kai.
"Shall I go with you, Young Master?" He asked giving Kai his hand.
Kai looked at me and I gave him a nod, he hesitantly held his two fingers. I saw Kent’s face turning red before he cleared his throat and led Kai towards one of the guest rooms.
"Young Master Kai is already taking over hearts," Erwin smiled.
"Whoever would not want to see such an adorable child smile." Warth spoke.
"He will surely grow up to be as beautiful as Master." Yuder said.
"And also break a lot of hearts." Bonnie said.
We sat down for lunch after that, Kai sat close to me and the kids started talking again. I had told Kent about Kai’s past and he had warned the kids to not do anything that would hurt or trigger any trauma in Kai.
The kids were understanding since they also had come from the similar background, it was almost endearing watching them shower Kai with so much love and attention. And I was sure that even Kai was starting to open up to their warmth and affection.
He was starting to speak to them and also eat whatever they were feeding him.
"Here, eat this piece, I cut it small enough for you."
"Chew properly, Young Master."
"Isn’t it tasty?"
"Here, taste this, Young Master."
The kids were fawning over him and I couldn’t help but recall the way the noble girls were fawning over me when I went with Rune to that one tea party. I wondered if Rune was doing well.
If it were possible, I would never have let him go to the battlefield but I didn’t have a choice. He was still a child who was out there fighting for survival.
I didn’t want him to lose his innocence, he was far too sweet and good and I didn’t want him to lose that side.
Just like him, I was worried about the other boys as well. They were at a sensitive age where they shouldn’t be thinking about survival and all, they could be studying and making some proper use of their lives but here they were shedding blood on the battlefield.
I heard a light burp from Kai and my attention turned to him. The kids seemed like they weren’t able to listen as they were still holding the spoons and forks in front of his little face.
"Don’t overdo it, kids." I spoke up, "I think, Kai is already full."
"Eh? But he didn’t eat that much."
"His puffy cheeks were too cute!"
"He hasn’t even had the full cake yet."
I chuckled, "Spare him for now, will you? He’ll be coming around with me so, you can feed him then."
The kids seemed a bit down but then they looked at each other before they all smiled at me.
"Then, shall we feed you, Master?" Sylvia asked.
I smiled as I looked at the kids and shrugged my shoulders.
"Sure."
