Chapter 185: 184. My Successor (1)

"What’s wrong?" Roan asked as he noticed my expression and I looked at him.

"Drac’s team was attacked by this team..."

Remi gasped while Roan’s expression turned grim.

"Is he..."

"Yes, Lyall and others reached on spot in time but..."

"But?"

"There were many casualties a lot of people from elite team were injured badly and..."

"And?"

"Drac is missing."

"What?!"

"Enora is injured so, Lyall said he would take the rest of the able bodied team to look for Drac."

"This is bad." Roan hissed.

"If that team is really that strong then... Young Master Drac..." Remi sounded my unspoken concern and I sighed deeply.

Drac was the only one among the boys who was unfazed about going for a war, he had been in the life-threatening situations almost all his life so, he wasn’t all that worried about being so close to death again.

Drac was strong too, but the problem was that I had told him to keep his Dragon’s power concealed at all costs so that he wouldn’t be exposed. But, now that he was in this situation I wondered what he must be doing right now. He must be alive that was sure but, in what state?

"Will you be going to look for him?" Roan asked.

"Yes," I answered without missing a beat.

There was no way I’d abandon my successor like that, he had my essence so, it was my responsibility to look after him.

"When will you depart then? Now?"

"No, I still have work here. Call the bird, I have to send a message to the team to stay put." I ordered and Roan nodded before he walked over to the window and whistled.

After a few seconds, a large raven bird swooped down and landed on the window sill.

I grabbed the feather pen and started writing the points of instruction for my team before I tied it securely to the raven’s foot. I brushed its neck gently and it released a shrill croak.

"Bring this to Lyall and make sure to return safely." I spoke to it in a soft voice making it flap its large wings.

The raven took off in the midnight’s darkness and I turned to look at Roan and Remi.

"Make preparations, I’ll be departing tomorrow at night."

"Yes, Master."

The next day, I found Lady Dahlia and Lord Devil in the parlor of my mansion after breakfast and I couldn’t help but cross my arms at my chest as I looked at them.

"Why are you two still here?"

"That question sounds rude, Master Dragon. Especially when there’s a lady among us." Lord Oberon pointed out making me sigh.

The two were playing a game of chess while sitting leisurely in front of each other.

"We are just relaxing after the ordeal that we had to go through, Master Ocean." Lady Dahlia said as she made her move in the game of chess.

"If you’re forgetting you should be heading back to Frosthail, Your Grace." I reminded her and she shrugged her shoulders.

"Alarice said he’s handling things well so, I am free to take some time to unwind while I’m out here besides, it’s good since the cold here isn’t that harsh."

"I suppose Frosthail must already be covered with snow by now." Lord Oberon said as he pulled his move.

"Yes, it is. But the snow here isn’t even that thick yet."

Lord Oberon smiled, "I wonder how you all handle such bitter cold."

"We have harmonised with that cold, it’s something that we deal with since birth so, unless our bodies grow strong enough to withstand it we can’t survive there." Lady Dahlia explained.

"It’s true that at the extremes of nature even the life in its vicinity adapts accordingly."

"We do indeed, it’s also because I’m so used to that cold that the winter of kingdom doesn’t feel much chilling for me." She admitted with a smile and Lord Oberon chuckled.

"The ladies of kingdom might not be able to survive in Frosthail if you say this, My Lady."

Lady Dahlia chuckled shrugging her shoulders and I sighed deeply as their conversation went on.

"Besides, Master Ocean why do you look so anxious? Is there something the matter?" Lady Dahlia asked.

"Such an expression doesn’t suit your handsome face so, of there’s anything on your mind please do tell us. We might be able to help." Lord Oberon said and I took a seat on the armchair looking at my two guests who were playing.

"There’s a bad news from the battlefield." I answered making the two to look at me.

The light-hearted expressions on their faces vanished in an instant leaving behind perplexed and worried gazes.

"What’s wrong?"

"One of the kids that I’m looking after has gone missing."

"What?!"

"Missing how?"

"The reports say that his cantonment was attacked by the rumoured Monster battalion of Denril. There were a lot of casualties along with the number of injured people and now he’s missing."

"That’s a really bad news." Lady Dahlia frowned.

"Are you planning on going to the battlefield then?" Lord Oberon asked and I nodded.

"I’ll be leaving for that place tonight."

"Pardon, tonight?!" He gasped.

"Yes, I can’t delay, he might be alive but... there are chances that he won’t be for long."

Besides, his secret must be protected at all costs. If everyone came to know that Drac was a Dragon then he would be in an even greater danger.

"Should I go along?" Lady Dahlia asked.

"No, I’ll go myself."

"But, it would be good if Her Grace goes along," Lord Oberon insisted and I sighed.

"I’m... I still don’t know much about the enemy so taking you could turn dangerous for you, My Lady."

"It seems like you’re forgetting that I’m strong enough to fight the rogues on my own, Master Ocean. And rogues are stronger than humans."

I turned my gaze on her with a grim expression at her statement and added, "That battalion isn’t human."

Lord Oberon and Lady Dahlia both looked shocked at my revelation.

"What?" Lord Oberon gasped.

"Then, are they shifters?" Lady Dahlia asked.

I shook my head, "My informants only managed to tell me that those people weren’t human, their strength and agility surpassed the human body’s limits."

Lady Dahlia sighed with an exasperated expression and announced, "All the more reason for me to go along."

"Your Grace-"

"You cannot expect me to stay back here while knowing that there are people out there who could pose some serious threat to my son and everyone else."

Come to think of it, Davian was placed quite close to the base where Drac was so, it was only natural that even his base would be attacked.

"All right, but we cannot stay for long and you’re not allowed to show yourself or tell anyone that I was with you. We’ll do our work in secret and then return immediately." I said.

"I understand." She answered.

"Is there something I can aide you with?" Lord Oberon asked.

"I don’t know how long it might take for me to return so, in my absence please look after Herot and Syndrill."

"Pardon? Even Syndrill?"

"Yes, I had given my word to the Syndrill’s new leader that I will look after the city for the time being."

"You mean, late Count Adam’s illegitimate son?" Lady Dahlia asked and I nodded.

"He was gravely injured while recovering the evidence against Peter so, he’s at the hospital."

"Didn’t you say that your guild recovered it for you?" Lord Oberon pointed out.

"I lied,"

"You’re really something, Master Ocean." Lord Oberon chuckled.

"Lady Dahlia," I spoke up making her look at me, "please make preparations for tonight. We’ll leave at midnight."

"All right. But will it only be myself and you?"

"Sir Adler might persist in going along." I mumbled and she nodded.

"Fine, since we don’t have a choice. Let’s only take him, the rest of the Seraph Knights will stay back here." I concluded.

"All right, I’ll instruct them accordingly."

"Fine then, I have some work to do, so, I’ll be back till evening." I said as I rose to my feet.

"Where are you going?" Lord Oberon asked.

"Imperial dungeons,"

"Pardon? Why there?"

"I still have questions that Peter needs to answer."

"Will he tell you though?"

"I’ll make him."

I stepped out of the parlor with Lady Dahlia going along to see the Seraph Knights.

Roan stood at the entrance of the mansion with the carriage ready and I fixed my mask before I got on the carriage.

Roan got in and took a seat in front of me, he seemed quite worried after the reports we received last night.

"I hope that kid is fine. He seemed as if he’d already gone through a lot."

"He was used by Salem for battles in the past," I prompted making Roan sigh deeply.

"Poor thing can’t catch a break,"

"It’s fine, he must be alive." I assured him.

"Just because he’s used to battles?" Roan asked.

"No, because he’s my successor."
