Chapter 180: 179. Devil’s Proxy (5)
It was half past midnight when I heard the knock, I turned to the window instead of the door from where the sound of knocking came.
I heard the windows open before I felt a presence stumble inside my study. I could smell the scent of blood as the person walked over and stood in front of me holding their appendage close to their chest.
I didn’t say anything as I observed the person in front of me with a blank look on my face while he stared back with the pain of being deceived swirling in his eyes.
"Is... Is the offer... that you... gave me... still there?" Zach’s voice was raspy as he staggered.
I could hear the drops of his blood dripping on my floor and the air growing thick with the scent of his blood.
"Yes, you’re still in time." I said and he stepped over to me with staggering feet.
He pulled out something from his bloodied vest and placed it down on the desk in front of me.
"This is what you wanted," he said as he held the desk for support.
"R-Rip him to shreds... as you said." Zach spoke through his teeth as he looked at me with bloodshot eyes and I nodded.
"I will."
"That... bastard..." Zach grimaced and I stood up from my seat before I walked up to him.
His arm was injured and a deep gash over his side. There was a pool of blood forming at his feet at this point as his pupils quivered while he forced himself to stay conscious.
"It’s fine to go to sleep now, Zach. Leave everything to me. I’ll make sure to avenge you and your father." I said and Zach slumped over letting his head fall over my shoulder.
Zach lost consciousness because of bloodloss and I grabbed him before he could fall down and I called Slater in.
"I told you to make sure he is alive, it didn’t mean that you would bring him back barely alive, Slater." I chided.
"Please forgive me, Master."
"Anyways, take him to Doc and get his wounds treated. He’s losing a lot of blood."
"Yes, Master."
Slater took Zach’s unconscious form from my shoulder on his back before he walked over to the window.
"Will you be all right carrying him from there? You can use the door sometimes, Slater." I said pointing at the door of my study.
Slater never used doors, he had made it his habit of going in and out of the windows whenever he visited me.
"I’m used to carrying the load twice as heavy as him, Master. And if I used door then he might die before I could make it out of your mansion." Slater stated before he climbed over the windowsill.
I watched as he leapt off with the fluidity of a feline before he landed on the ground and then took off disappearing in the darkness of the night.
I walked back to my desk and picked up the papers which were crumpled at the edges and tied with a cloth. There was blood staining those papers but, I could still read the contents which made me smile.
I walked out of my mansion and stopped in the front yard looking at the trees that fringed my estate. I let out a low whistle and the shadowy figures that were perched on the trees and the mansion quickly leapt down and gathered in front of me.
I saw their kneeling figures before I pulled out one of the papers from the bundle in my hands and handed it to the nearest assassin.
"I want all of them by tomorrow evening," I ordered.
The assassin took the papers from my hand and kept his head down.
"Yes, Master."
I returned inside the mansion with the anticipation of the next day.
One could never shed their original nature, if a person was good then you could expect them to do good things and feel guilty if they do something bad. But for a person who was fundamentally bad, you could always trust them to stick to their nature. If they were adept in deceit then, you could always expect them to do that. And it was easier to pluck people from their side because their nature made the meaning of the word trust shallow.
Just like what happened with Zach. Zach trusted his stepbrother but when he learned about what he did, Zach felt betrayed and confronted him. And just as I had expected, Peter tried to kill Zach but failed since Slater was there to protect him.
Zach managed to swipe the things that I wanted and returned to me but I knew it would be a bit hard for him to trust others around him now.
Still, I could care less. Zach wasn’t the kind of person who would betray others, he knew the rules of business and he had potential so, having him on my side was as good as having a valuable ally.
As for Peter, then I would have fun watching his face when he sees the tables turning against him in court.
Lady Dahlia had shifted over to her mansion in capital a few days ago since she didn’t want to draw attention to me after the Baron Oberon was arrested. She had assured me that she would be there at the trial and side with the truth.
Even without her help, I would manage well but her presence would be impactful since the Queen and her judge wouldn’t dare to sideline the evidence against the real culprit.
The day of the trial dawned and I stood in front of the mirror checking myself as Remi adjusted my hair and my collar with a maid brushing away the creases over my black coat.
"This goes here and here," Remi said as he handed the silver accessories to the maid and she attached it to my coat.
Remi attached the diamond cuffs over my sleeves and adjusted the cuffs of my shirt properly before he placed the gloves over my hands.
He was getting better at arranging my outfits everyday and he almost seemed like he was extra careful whenever I had to go out in public even if I was going out in a disguise he made sure that every aspect of my attire was perfect.
Even today, he made sure that I was adorned to perfection.
He picked up the vial of perfume and I raised my hand stopping him.
"No scent," I reminded.
Remi nodded placing it back down and picked up the black hair tie and brushed my hair back before tying them in a short pig tail.
"There, done." He concluded after giving me a final overall look.
I released a deep breath before I gave my reflection a nod of approval and then looked at Remi who picked up the black walking cane and presented it to me.
I took the cane and stepped out of the room finding Roan already standing there with the files in his hands.
"I should get used to this," he muttered making me tilt my head slightly.
"What?"
"Your disguises." He said gesturing at my new form.
The Ocean with darker blue hair, face covered with a mask and dressed up as an aristocrat.
I smiled as I took the files from his hands and ruffled his hair.
"Take care of the things I’ve told you about," I instructed and he nodded before I turned on my heel and walked away.
The carriage with the crest of Ryujin family was already prepared and waiting in front of my mansion. The carriage made with the finest black teak wood, silver adornments and best quality leather.
Two of my male servants were going with me instead of Roan as he was supposed to do something else.
I walked over and got inside the carriage before taking a seat on the lush leather seat. I looked at the file in my hands and released a deep sigh as I rewinded the possibilities that I could happen in my mind.
[Goddess of Wisdom wonders if you are nervous.]
[Defender of Divine Glory asks if that ever happens.]
"I had to ask you something." I prompted.
"Why aren’t you guys giving me any tasks lately?"
[Goddess of Wisdom says that you’re already on a path that you are carving on your own that’s why they are satiated by watching your endeavours.]
[Defender of Divine Glory explains that your path is quite different from all the other candidates so, the quests that they will assign from now on will be of larger scale.]
"So, you mean since I’ve unlocked a new route even you guys have no idea of what will happen next." I summarised and was met with silence.
"I can’t believe it... You guys are literally saying that you have no idea if I’m on the right path or not."
[Giver of Gifts assures you that you are on a right path.]
"And how can be so sure of that?"
[Goddess of Wisdom says that the assurance is because of the presence of an enemy.]
"Do you even know how many enemies I have at this point?"
[Giver of Gifts says that you have more allies than enemies.]
I almost chuckled at that and leaned back in my seat as I smirked anticipating the events of what would happen in a few hours.
"Let’s see, what my biggest enemy does after what I’m going to do today?"
