Chapter 178: 177. Devil’s Proxy (3)

I surveyed the areas around Shadowcliff and posted a few of my assassins to keep an eye on the activities going on around.

I had all the reports delivered to the guest house that Lord Devil had arranged for me to work at since the time I was looking after Shadowcliff.

He was currently detained in the dungeons and the trial was a week later, so, I had to look after this city for around one more week and then he would come back to his place.

As of the evidence that I would have to gather to prove his innocence, I had dispatched a new pawn but I guess I would have to wait until he made his decision.

There was a knock on the door which turned my attention and I called the person in.

Gabel Delacroz entered the study with a bundle of papers in his hands, his sandy blonde hair was swept back and his murky turquoise eyes gazed at me from behind his monocle. He was the aide of Lord Devil and looked after the administrative work of Shadowcliff.

He was staying by my side as an aide in absence of Lord Devil. But I knew it was for two reasons, one was because he wanted to make sure that I didn’t do anything troublesome in absence of the real Boss and second, because that Boss himself had asked Gabel to stay by my side and help me as much as possible.

"Lord Dragon, here are the reports that you asked for," Gabel said as he placed down the bundle of papers.

I looked at the reports of the usage of the Magic Gate and made a note of the people whom I found suspicious.

Gabel hovered beside me as he looked at the names I was writing down.

"Are these possible suspects?" He asked.

"Apparently," I answered.

"But, didn’t you say you knew who was behind this?"

"Based on my hunch, yes, but the court won’t believe my intuition, right? I need to dig out evidence and witnesses to support my claims."

"May I ask who it is?" Gabel asked and I looked at him.

I could see the inquistive glint in his eyes along with the hint of concern for his original Master.

"I can’t name him yet, the trial is in a week so, until then I would look for every possible shred of evidence that I can find." I said making him purse his lips.

"I’ll do my work just as I had said, so Mr Delacroz, just make sure to keep this place together until Lord Devil returns. I promised him that I’ll keep it safe in his absence." I smiled making him sigh.

"Yes, Lord Dragon."

At night, I teleported back home to Aurelius mansion finding Dad waiting for me along with Silas.

"It’s rare to see you here, Uncle." I commented and he exchanged one glance with my father before he turned to me.

"I’m here because I wanted to tell you something important."

I tilted my head to one side as I asked, "You could’ve used the communication device as usual."

Silas sighed, "It’s not a matter that I could speak using the communication device."

I observed his expression for a long moment before I looked at Dad who seemed concerned.

"Let’s have dinner together and then talk about this," I suggested.

We sat at the dining table together with Dad looking at both me and Silas occasionally.

"What is the situation at the warzone?" Silas asked filling the awkward silence between us.

"My brother and others are doing good

There’s no news about the rumoured Monster battalion entering any of their battlefields yet. It’s just I don’t have any information about Lyall and others." I answered.

I couldn’t taste the food anymore. The time was passing by and even though everything else seemed like it was going well, this one aspect was causing me great worry.

"That’s concerning." Silas commented.

"I’m feeling worried," I admitted.

"I’m sure they will be fine," Dad piped in.

"You said Lyall and others were extremely strong so, maybe it’s because they are facing some sort of a big thing that’s why they couldn’t send you a report immediately." He suggested.

"It’s good if whatever they’re dealing with isn’t that serious, or..."

"Or?" Dad asked.

"... Didn’t you send someone to investigate?" Silas asked.

"No, I don’t know their location so, I couldn’t send anyone into an unknown terrain without any prior preparation."

"How about sending a word to Sir Rudyard or someone who could look into it from the battlefield?" Dad suggested and I shook my head.

"They already have their hands full with their own battles, I can’t ask them to look into this."

We fell silent for a while after that and my thoughts ended back on the situation at hands. Being Lord Devil’s proxy wasn’t an easy job, at this moment, it wasn’t only my own matters but also the three Underworld cities that were under my wing. I was glad that I had Kyrell and Roan who could look after their assigned spots but it was still a headache to look after Herot and Shadowcliff together.

"How’s work at Shadowcliff?" Silas asked making me sigh.

"It’s too much to handle everything on my own,"

"There isn’t anyone to help you?" Dad asked.

"There are a few but I have to look after the important things on my own." I said.

"Is there anything that I can help with?" Dad offered.

"It’s fine, Father. You are already busy with the affairs of Duchy and the Magic Gate."

"But..." I placed my hand over his with a smile making him sigh.

After dinner, I and Silas walked over to the library as he wanted to discuss about something important.

"So, what did you find?" I asked as I took a seat and he pulled out a glass vial filled with murky black fluid down on the table in front of me.

"Your speculation was correct." He stated making me frown and pick up the vial.

"But, what is the meaning of this thing being here? Do you think someone from-"

"There are a lot of possibilities, Uncle." I spoke up making him sigh.

"It’s giving me a headache, if these kind of things keep happening then the kingdom will be in chaos."

"Indeed it will be."

"You have to look for that person soon, Reina. If that person is on loose then, he will do something similar again."

"I know..." I mumbled.

I tapped my finger over the table as I eyed the fluid. Thousands of thoughts ran through my head at the same time and I kept looking for the most probable possibility.

"... You know what this means, right?" He asked and I hummed.

"Will you warn people about this?"

"No, this thing should stay between us. The one who’s behind this knows I’m looking into this so, I must be careful of not bringing him to light. Whoever he is, he is somewhat like me, he’s using people around him." I speculated.

"You still haven’t told about what we found at Mordino to anyone,"

"Whom am I supposed to tell?"

Silas opened his mouth and then closed it back, I wasn’t obliged to report to anyone since I was doing everything on my own. There was no boss for me except for my Patrons who like stalkers were always watching over me.

[Goddess of Wisdom feels offended by being called a stalker.]

[Defender of Divine Glory corrects you saying that they are your Guardians.]

[Giver of Gifts says she respects your privacy.]

He handed me the reports of his findings along with the other information about whatever extra information that he could find.

"That’s all."

"Thank you for doing all this on such a short notice, Uncle." I spoke as I looked at him and he sighed.

I had taken four dead bodies of those rogues shifters who weren’t in that bad state and handed them over to Silas for further investigation.

I had noticed the strange behaviour in the rogues that night which was why I had to look into it. It was similar to what I had seen in those hybrid cheetahs which I had seen in Mordino.

Someone was pulling strings from behind the scenes, the one who wasn’t on my radar yet.

For the next few days, I was busy with the affairs regarding the cities and my Oasis. Roan was slumped with more work because Oasis was completely in his hands now while I looked after the underworld business.

The day of the trial was coming closer, faster than I expected and I still didn’t have the vital evidence in hand.

There were only three days now before the trial, I could delay the hearing in this matter but there was a possibility that Lord Devil’s real identity would be revealed if more time passes. And once that happens, it would be impossible to retain his reputation.

Just as I was pondering on the best way while I was at Shadowcliff, I heard a knock, I sensed Gabel’s presence so called him in.

"Someone is here to see you, Lord Dragon." He informed me.

"Bring them in."

Gabel bowed before he walked out of the room and returned after a few seconds with a person whom I was wanting to see.

Gabel left the room after the person entered and I smiled.

"Welcome to Shadowcliff. So, have you made your decision?"
